Decline party invite because she gave me a thumbs up?

I know this is petty, but I find the whole birthday party scene an unwanted drain on my family time, my energy levels and my finances.

I’d much rather do play dates.

When you’ve got as many kids as I have it’s lucky if we don’t have a birthday each day of the weekend.

So my eldest daughter was invited to a party where everyone is invited.

I don’t know this mum, hardly see her to talk to her, but the kids get on so I was going to go… like you do. She came to my daughters party, exchange the gift back, etc

BUT the mum is obviously selectively responding to several mums RSVPs with either a 👍🏻or a ❤️

I got a thumbs up 👍🏻

Now I’m wondering why I should put myself out when she has outed me as being less equal than half the other mums.

AIBU to decline purely because of the 👍🏻?

This is a joke, right?

miniaturepixieonacid · 12/04/2023 18:03

WTF?! The mum maybe just didn't want to give the same response to everyone - she probably (if she thought about it all) varied it every other or every third parent. Or maybe hit whichever she saw first. There's no way she has graded her friends in an emoji heirarchy.

In all seriousness, do you struggle with overthinking every social interaction and assuming things that people are thinking about you/intending from tiny, almost certainly meaningless social cues? I do that so no judgement. I'm constantly stressing about how this or that has been perceived and replaying conversations in my head hours after the person I was talking to has probably forgotten all about it. But this seems extreme.

Jellykat · 12/04/2023 18:06

Look on the bright side, it was a thumbs up as opposed to the middle finger

Sallyh87 · 12/04/2023 18:07

I’m assuming this is a joke right? Otherwise I really need to learn about the emoji ranking system because I am very ignorant!

WellPlaced · 12/04/2023 18:08

I think that, like it or not, everyone has levels of friendship. You have said that you don’t particularly know this Mum so I can understand the 👍🏼

I do this myself when people comment on posts. My close friends or family will get a ❤️ and others who I don’t really mix with would get a 👍🏼

Fam23 · 12/04/2023 18:09

Oh Jesus Christ, I feel bad for your daughter. Maybe she’s just really swamped with life and hasn’t given it a second thought whether she’s giving you a heart or thumbs up reaction.

DadDadDad · 12/04/2023 18:10

I'm calling it - is this a reverse AIBU?

Museya15 · 12/04/2023 18:11

👍

Robinsflyhigh · 12/04/2023 18:13

She probably hasn't even realised who she has given a heart to.

Can you remember if you gave her a particular emoji when she RSVP'd to your daughter's party?

Sorry, but you sound like a child who has been given a red lollipop when they wanted an orange one!

Emmamoo89 · 12/04/2023 18:16

🙄

HappinessDragon · 12/04/2023 18:16

My husband sent me a thumbs up earlier when I told him I was finishing work early.

Bastard.

Nah, get yourself off to the party. She might be really nice.

Janch13 · 12/04/2023 18:17

Get a grip

TheNoodlesIncident · 12/04/2023 18:19

I'd just be glad I got thumbs up like the other mums and not just 'K'

LuckyPeonies · 12/04/2023 18:22

I am petty as well, so I gave you a UANBU. 😎

crimsonpeak · 12/04/2023 18:23

Jesus. Try saying aloud ‘you can’t go to the party because X’s mum gave ME a thumbs up and not a heart’.

Yep - sounds bloody stupid doesn’t it.

Chickychoccyegg · 12/04/2023 18:24

This has got to be a wind up 🤣🤣

IDontWantToBeAPie · 12/04/2023 18:25

6namechang3 · 12/04/2023 17:00

Someone much younger than me said thumbs up was passive aggressive on teams and they always use heart. I have no idea if this is a commonly held notion ?

True but not in this context

Snowpatrolling · 12/04/2023 18:26

An ‘ex’ friend actually blocked me and called me a basic bitch after I liked her posts with just a like and not a heart or anything.

M is that you????

if there’s more than one of you fuckin hell!!

IDontWantToBeAPie · 12/04/2023 18:27

Backtobed · 12/04/2023 17:19

At least you didn't get an upside down smiley face, (🙃) I hear that's like a kick to the shins.

True this means you hate something 😂

Cantstandbullshitanymore · 12/04/2023 18:27

Jonei · 12/04/2023 16:51

Isn't the party for your child? Not you?

Yes it is but she gave op a thumbs up not a heart, preposterous and ridiculous.

LTB sorry STP (skip the party)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/04/2023 18:28

If that's all you've got to piss moan and gripe about you're leading a very charmed life.

Respberrypachouli · 12/04/2023 18:29

You’re not for real, are you?

Imagine the headspace men get to have - imagine the wifework they neither take on nor have to perform - when all of this - I mean all of it - from organising a party to the social politics of ❤️ or 👍 is done in the heads of women.

ReadersD1gest · 12/04/2023 18:32

Is this a (distinctly unfunny) joke thread?
