Those of you who voted for Brexit when is it going to get better and how?

N0addedsalt · 12/04/2023 07:40

I didn’t and didn’t see any benefits. Tried to refocus anger about the lies during the campaign to resignation and acceptance. Was ready to try and embrace/ focus on positives and move forward but still really can’t see any. Now just getting increasingly worried and also fearful.

Hit me with all the benefits and when we’re going to see them impacting our lives.

The £350 million a week for our NHS (sarcasm). I still can't believe people fell for it.

Are you chortling away to yourself? It's smug posts like yours that would make people defensive. Those people wielding quite a lot of power as we've seen.

Where were all these erudite views prior to Brexit? When the referendum was cast? It's exactly the same as pre-election, nobody with any intelligence offering to guide or inform, just the usual blowhards afterwards, berating away.

I would never vote leave but I can understand that people trusting government would make a poor decision. We should NEVER have been presented with that referendum. I still can't believe that people don't acknowledge that.

Cherry2010 · 12/04/2023 11:32

But it’s happened, and won’t un-happen, so what’s the point of dragging it up? Also, in between Brexit and now, we had a pandemic. So…all our futures were put on hold for a bit. You’re not the only one struggling.

verdantverdure · 12/04/2023 11:33

The U.K. was also known as "The Dirty Man if Europe" because of the sewage in our beaches.

It was predicted that Brexit would take us back to that.

amp.theguardian.com/environment/2016/feb/03/brexit-would-return-britain-to-being-dirty-man-of-europe

And it has.

amp.theguardian.com/environment/2023/apr/03/englands-top-beaches-faced-8500-hours-of-sewage-dumping-last-year-study-says

notprincehamlet · 12/04/2023 11:33

Well we're now free to develop 8-legged chickens and smother our shellfish with sewage. So there's that.

Prahdeepx · 12/04/2023 11:34

To those who voted Leave: what exactly did you think was going to happen?
My Dad voted Leave. He expected the government to take a zero tolerance approach to small boats and just close the borders. He thought he was giving them the power to do so. He thought he was blocking the tide of immigrants which would inevitably arrive when Turkey joined the EU. With fewer people we could stop building on all of the green fields and public services wouldn’t be so overstretched. The NHS would get £350m per week and we would all have better healthcare. Stopping more people arriving would mean a better standard of living for those who are already here.

I discussed it with him at length and he was adamant that population increase was the cause of most of the country’s problems, so it needed to be halted. I told him that the government had the power to halt it now, they just failed to do so. He said bollocks, if they could stop it they would! Misplaced faith in the government basically. He thought their failure to act was because they couldn’t, not because they couldn’t be arsed.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/04/2023 11:34

@RedPanda901 you voted Leave because Vannis Varoufakis - LOL!

Lampzade · 12/04/2023 11:34

icelolly12 · 12/04/2023 10:59

I don't know. I really do think some are genuinely happy to suffer in the name of being "independent" and "shackle free" from the EU. They almost take pride in suffering for what they see as the greater good. Although what this greater good is they can't seem to define.

You are probably right

Cabella · 12/04/2023 11:35

@Almostwelsh
Absoltely agree, I left working for one logistic company, and then another, due to Eastern Europeans being recruited abroad and then flown over to UK, housed and work provided by employment agencies who behaved like a four letter word beginning with a "p" roughly translated as parasites. The new workforce were collectively ignorant, arrogant and behaved like UK companies should roll out a red carpet for them. I became sick of mainly retired people, therefore out of the rat race for employment, saying " the Eastern Europeans are doing the work that UK people don't want to do. " Ar-r-g-hh ! Go into any UK Jobcentre and there are people who are desperate for ongoing work, also desperate for housing.

Cabella · 12/04/2023 11:36

*Absolutely

Aaron95 · 12/04/2023 11:36

The benefits of Brexit are not ecconomic. Brexit came at an ecconomic cost. But to many there are some very important things which were worth the price.

The end of free movement of people. Large numbers of non-British citizens have left the UK.

The ability to determine our own immigration policy.

Complete control over taxation. We can now set variable VAT rates which previously was not possible whilst in the EU.

The UK is no longer subject to rulings from EU courts. If we don't like a law we can just change it.

The ability to set our own trade tariffs. Previously this was controlled at EU level.
Can now sign trade agreements with other countries. Yes we just left the best trade deal we ever had with our biggest trading partner, but now we can sign agreements with other countries if we want.

Blue passports - it may only be symbolic but has become a focus point for many anti-EU campaigners.

Rules relating to pollution are now uder our control. If we want to dump sewerage we can without the EU fining us.

No more UK money going to the EU budget.

For the record I voted to remain and think it was a massive mistake but to many other people the benefits are apparently worth the price.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/04/2023 11:34

@RedPanda901 you voted Leave because Vannis Varoufakis - LOL!

That’s not what I said!

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/04/2023 11:39

Yes - but voting for the UK - that is not in the /Euro and not anything like Greece economically - because of the way Greece was treated during a financial crisis that was a good part their own making is well .... a bit special.

Lonelycrab · 12/04/2023 11:41

He thought he was blocking the tide of immigrants which would inevitably arrive when Turkey joined the EU

Which turned out to be untrue, Turkey not joining the EU any time soon as far as I can see.

Alongside the formation of an “Eu army” which also turned out to be a lie; if there was going to be one, the events in Ukraine would have brought that about, surely. Yet no word of this mythical army appearing.

Two pretty big lies that were central to the leave campaign.

Mutabiliss · 12/04/2023 11:41

MarshaBradyo · 12/04/2023 11:08

Where can you see the groundswell represented politically?

I don’t think it’s reaching MPs

Well no, of course not. They're the same MPs as were voted in before we left. The Tories are basically UKIP/BNP.

The people who will be MPs in 20 years are the kids who've been stuck on coaches this week trying to get into the EU.

Pollysmum2012 · 12/04/2023 11:41

There are no benefits OP. I'm still really angry about how they screwed up our country and haven't taken any responsibility.

ItWillWash · 12/04/2023 11:44

I am well aware the EU army was a myth but I struggle to understand why it would be a bad thing. The UK is a tiny, vulnerable island. Our ability to defend ourselves is limited compared to a massive landmass and population such as Russia. Why would throwing ourselves in with the EU, one of the biggest superpowers of the developed world, be a bad thing?

Thankfully at the moment fascist parties don't do well in the UK. If the economic system fails with say high continued inflation, increased unemployment and a massive housing crisis, who knows - Farage seem itching for a reboot.

Mirabai · 12/04/2023 11:44

@RedPanda901

So you shot yourself in the head because your friend was shot in the foot.

And went from having significant input into how other EU countries are treated - to having none.

How does this help Greece or the U.K. or you exactly? 🤔

ambivalent75 · 12/04/2023 11:45

Kendodd · 12/04/2023 09:04

More benefits!
I know loads of business who have more to the EU so a benefit for them (I visit business for work).
Also, it made Putin very, very happy indeed to see a weakened UK.

Yes, Putin flexing his muscles, a war and destabilised Europe (and beyond) was predicted as one of the likely results of Brexit. But it was as if no one considered peace as the key aspect it is. And due to war we are now in this cost of living crisis!

There are Labour MPs too, obviously not the ones who were behind Brexit

Why is it not reaching Labour MPs?

If shudder the thought Trump got back then he would be itching to say to Europe you're on your own defend yourself as part of his America First. He would throw Ukraine under the bus as well.

Yes I forgot about the EU army. Basically there were a lot of things that people didn’t want to happen, and they thought that by voting Leave they were giving the government the power to stop them happening. When actually many of those things haven’t happened at all.

tara66 · 12/04/2023 11:50

My son keeps saying ''This country is finished!''

GobbieMaggie · 12/04/2023 11:51

This democracy thing is a real bugger !.
