Does hot cross bun in child’s lunchbox replace sandwich?

DC normally has cheese roll, fruit, veg sticks, crisps, pack of little biscuits. Tomorrow I propose replacing cheese roll with buttered HXB and chunk of cheese. DH thinks replace biscuits with HXB.

Who IBU?

Hot cross bun is a sweet treat not a sandwich in my opinion

goodkidsmaadhouse · 10/04/2023 17:08

Sorry, but I think you are… hot cross buns are really sweet!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/04/2023 17:08

Replaces biscuits, definitely.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 10/04/2023 17:09

Hot x bun is a sugary treat.

iusedtobeasize8 · 10/04/2023 17:09

I would class a hot cross bun as a cake so would put it in place of biscuits

NewNovember · 10/04/2023 17:10

No it's cake.

RJnomore1 · 10/04/2023 17:10

Is it one of the savoury hot cross buns?

id argue even if not it could be the equivalent of say a cinnamon and raisin bagel and a roll plus a hot x bun would be a bit much.

mum2jakie · 10/04/2023 17:11

It's bready so I would replace the sandwich with it. Unlikely to eat a sandwich and HXB together

misskatamari · 10/04/2023 17:12

Our house would be on your side OP. Dh and ds often use a hot cross bun as the bread in a sandwich

CaptainCallisto · 10/04/2023 17:12

I would have said the same as you. Hot cross buns, whilst sweet, are bread, so I wouldn't want a sandwich as well. When DC have had them, they've replaced the sandwich, but they don't tend to have a packet of biscuits. They would have hot cross bun, cucumber/carrot sticks, a cheese snack (babybel or equivalent), sometimes a boiled egg, and then a piece of fruit for their sweet thing.

CollieFIower · 10/04/2023 17:13

Everyone will say it replaces the biscuits. I'm on the fence. I think with a chunk of cheese and maybe some plain oatcakes or some other crunchy non-sweet carb to replace the biscuits, it replaces the sandwich.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 10/04/2023 17:14

I have just eaten a hxb spread with marmite and grated cheese.

Oh egg is a good shout

Buttered HXB, veggie sticks, a piece of fruit, and a hard boiled egg is a perfectly good meal.

MinnieMountain · 10/04/2023 17:16

It’s the sweet thing.
I often put a Welsh cake in DS’s lunchbox for his pudding.

meaniemaybe · 10/04/2023 17:18

This is really surprising! They’re basically bread with a little bit of sugar in the dough and a few raisins, no? Bit of syrup glaze.

just checked and only 40 more kcals than the bread rolls I use. 17g more sugar which is 2 of those mini boxes of raisins. Hmm

ItWasntMyFault · 10/04/2023 17:36

I'd say it replaces the sandwich - otherwise it's like having two rolls (albeit one a bit sweeter than the other)

kitsuneghost · 10/04/2023 17:37

Hot cross bun isn't any worse than bread IMO. neither are a good lunch option.

TheChosenTwo · 10/04/2023 17:38

I mean as a one off it would be fine to give it as a sandwich replacement but would make sure there was a really vibrant mix of veg and salad stuff too, definitely would forgo the biscuits.

MadameThenardier · 10/04/2023 17:39

Yes, it sweet but it replaces the sandwich as it’s bread and way more filling than biscuits. If I have a hot cross bun for lunch I don’t eat a sandwich too. It could probably replace both sandwich and biscuits if you are worried about sugar. With extra veggie sticks

OnlyFannys · 10/04/2023 17:39

I wouldnt imagine your ds will be able to manage a HXB and a cheese roll as it's a lot of filling carbs so maybe just add some kind of protein alongside it (some chicken bites or rolled up ham or an egg or something)

Skyliner1 · 10/04/2023 17:40

17g more sugar is loads! I'd definitely not put that and the biscuits in. I'd already voted for replacing the biscuits rather than the roll, but now I definitely think ditch the biscuits.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 10/04/2023 17:41

I'd say it replaces the sandwich. I had a hot-cross bun with cheese for lunch yesterday instead a sandwich.

A sandwich plus a hot cross bun is basically two sandwiches.

GrassWillBeGreener · 10/04/2023 17:42

Another vote here for letting it replace both the roll and the biscuits. Some may have missed that you planned to put the cheese in separately anyway.

Heronwatcher · 10/04/2023 17:43

Yes, YABU! Have you ever visualised 17g of sugar, it’s quite a bit. Especially if you put biscuits in there as well. And BTW my dentist says that the middle class view that raisins are a better treat than chocolate has ruined many a child’s teeth, he says kids shouldn’t have raisins every day, it should only be at mealtimes and his preference teeth-wise would be a couple of squares of chocolate any time!

Bemyclementine · 10/04/2023 17:43

I'm assuming this will happen once ir twice a year at Easter?? In which case I'd go with you. My dc had a cinnamon swirl, chocolate and crisps for breakfast yesterday. Its hardly representative of their general diet!
