Does hot cross bun in child’s lunchbox replace sandwich?

meaniemaybe · 10/04/2023 17:07

DC normally has cheese roll, fruit, veg sticks, crisps, pack of little biscuits. Tomorrow I propose replacing cheese roll with buttered HXB and chunk of cheese. DH thinks replace biscuits with HXB.

Who IBU?

I only toast them if they’re going stale and rarely do they last that long! They’re enriched aren’t they so stay moist, not like a fruit tea cake which is immediately dry and always needs toasting?

The problem with hot cross buns is the top is all sticky. I hate that.

For one day, I don’t think it matters. 😅

I’m with you on that.

CheezePleeze · 10/04/2023 19:49

It's really not a lot of food. Both my children (age 5 and 2) would have a sandwich, fruit, yogurt, cucumber, tomatoes, cheese stick and maybe a few baked crisps or a Biscuit. They eat piles of salad every day.

That's a lunch as big as most adults would eat.

Which is fine but it's silly to say 'it's really not a lot of food', just because you're overfeeding your children.

Hot cross bun isn't any worse than bread IMO. neither are a good lunch option.

Why isn’t bread a good lunch option?

RoseMartha · 10/04/2023 19:51

I would say it replaces the sandwich. You can get cheesy hot cross buns which are tasty

PollyThePixie · 10/04/2023 19:56

is that a sandwich with 2 slices of buttered bread plus a substantial filling. Or a much smaller version of one. Then a whole piece of fruit or a few grapes, a whole yoghurt, more than a couple of slices of cucumber and tomato and a decent sized cheese stick.

And what is a pile of salad? Where I live a salad is served with lunch and dinner, you help yourself to it and a pile would be a couple of large helpings picked up with salad tongues or large serving spoons. It would make quite a mound on your plate.

Whats your problem?

The poster clearly says that her children aged 5 and 2 (yes just 2) eat piles of salad every day, thats every day

So these two little tots sit at the dinner table, or perhaps even on the sofa with bowls of big salad, yes probably picked up with the salad tongs so that there is a big pile of it. They chomp their way through it. I dont know why you're questioning it.

Tofuislovely · 10/04/2023 20:05

OMG so much angst on here. I'm a child of the 80s and had Angel Delight (amazing, still love it) and Pot noodles ( ditto) when I was little. I'm also the mother of a 22 year old who had ( oh the shame) far too many fizzy drinks and biscuits than were strictly healthy. We're still here...( and my BMI is about 21 and I eat loads of fruit and veg and other healthy stuff). Chill!

Tiredtoday22 · 10/04/2023 19:37

I'd say it replaces the sandwich. But I'm intrigued as I always eat them toasted and hot/warm...if you're putting it in the lunchbox do you still toast it?! Can you eat them without toasting them?!

You can eat them without toasting but they're not very nice.

I like HXBs but they're not very substantial. To me they fall into the category of food that makes me more hungry not less, so I avoid them.

But I'm very much in the 'as a one off it doesn't really matter' category and if that's what we had in, I'd probably just ask the recipient of the lunchbox what they wanted, with appropriate negotiation if they asked for something I thought was too much/too little or way way off in terms of nutrition.

But kudos to the OP for starting a thread that brings out the best of the MN food crazies. It's always amusing to see the Team Protein vs 'Can't comprehend non mainstream food choices' battle.

I would ask the same of you but I’d have to be interested in what your problem is and I’m not.

Whatkindofuckeryisthis · 10/04/2023 20:09

Half and half?! Half a cheese roll and then half a hot cross bun…

Fairislefandango · 10/04/2023 20:11

It's not about the specific nutritional breakdown of ingredients or how 'bready' the two items are, it's about the fact that a cheese roll is a savoury item and a hot cross bun is a sweet item. Main course and dessert.

Yeah, it AIBU existed in the 1980s, the food threads would have been epic.

Do you remember that luminous powdered orange drink that was all E numbers, like an instant Sunny Delight? Vesta curries? Findus crispy pancakes?

We had asparagus growing in our garden but we had no idea what to do with it so it just grew about 5 ft tall and went to seed then DF dug it up and put it on the compost heap. DM said she thought it was a vegetable but seeing as we didn't really eat anything except carrots, potatoes, cabbage and peas, there was no chance it was going to be cooked and eaten.

You've forgotten the creme de la creme - Vesta cardboard meals. I LOVED the 'paella'.

You’ve mentioned over feeding but I think it’s open to interpretation and whilst it may look like a lot to some posters the reality could be very different. It could be small amounts of a wide variety of food or more generous amounts of a wide variety but it’s only a snapshot of one meal a day and probably balances out over a day. The sandwich could be something with one bite taken from each quarter or a whole sandwich with nothing left of it.

Tofuislovely · 10/04/2023 20:18

@BarbaraofSeville and @bellac11 YES! And soda stream concoctions ( dragon's breath and witch's brew and the like) in those days which were amazing! And very vibrantly coloured back then!

MRex · 10/04/2023 20:30

AllOfThemWitches · 10/04/2023 19:00

My eldest used to eat 'piles' of vegetables too but it clearly wasn't anything to do with me as my second child barely touches the damn things.

Get that child a mumsnet account immediately.

Tofuislovely · 10/04/2023 20:36

Actually, having a quick Google, scrap dragon's breath, think it was Dracula's blood! We loved it and so did all the other kids!

I cant decide if I'm disgusted or impressed

Toast the HXB and melt the cheese over the smoky bacon.

You'll thank me later.

Windybeachday · 10/04/2023 21:22

My DC wouldn't eat a hot cross bun and a cheese roll. Would have to be one or the other. The problem with replacing the biscuits is that a HCB is a bit of a one off fun lunch here so if it comes at the cost of the biscuits I think that would ruin the treat a bit. So HCB and biscuits I say. Haven't done holiday club for a while but recall they always needed more snacky things for breaks than normal school day. And it's a very active day.

Windybeachday · 10/04/2023 21:24

But more importantly, I'm intrigued by cheese sandwich hot cross buns!!

GoodChat · 10/04/2023 21:24

@NeverDropYourMooncup I'm going to buy hot cross buns and smoky bacon tomorrow!
