Does hot cross bun in child’s lunchbox replace sandwich?

DC normally has cheese roll, fruit, veg sticks, crisps, pack of little biscuits. Tomorrow I propose replacing cheese roll with buttered HXB and chunk of cheese. DH thinks replace biscuits with HXB.

Who IBU?

Oh and aldi stock them buns year round. They are a staple in once lunch box here. They go in plain though like everything feckin else they put in their mouth.

midgemadgemodge · 10/04/2023 18:43

Cheese goes with anything

Suzi888 · 10/04/2023 18:45

A hot cross bun is a cake. YABU.

midgemadgemodge · 10/04/2023 18:46

No it's not
That's why you can have hot cross buns and chocolate for afters

Otherwise it would be afters and afters and no breakfast

I buy them to fill up my 16 year old ds. He takes a wrap, hot cross bun, and piece of fruit to college. Though, he would not have managed two bread products before his teens.

Ha. Relatable.

I would do a sandwich and hxb replaces biscuit/cake/soreen. Piles of salad has made me laugh though 😜

It's really not a lot of food. Both my children (age 5 and 2) would have a sandwich, fruit, yogurt, cucumber, tomatoes, cheese stick and maybe a few baked crisps or a Biscuit. They eat piles of salad every day.

Piles of salad? Only on MN 😂

Yes, aged 5 and 2 and they eat PILES of salad, and everyday!!! Hilarious

Salad is watery nutrient weak food in any case, even if they could fit piles of it into their little small tummies

itsgettingweird · 10/04/2023 18:57

I'd replace the roll and also remove the biscuits.

Purely on the basis it's as filling as the roll but sweet like the biscuits.

PalmtreesAndChampagne · 10/04/2023 18:57

@bellac11 'Massive salad' 😂

AllOfThemWitches · 10/04/2023 19:00

My eldest used to eat 'piles' of vegetables too but it clearly wasn't anything to do with me as my second child barely touches the damn things.

SkankingWombat · 10/04/2023 19:06

Served as a sandwich (cheese inside the bun) it replaces the sandwich IMO. But then we have Jamaican bun & cheese fairly often, so it doesn't feel weird to me. Bun has a different density to HXB, but a similar spice combo.

tourdefrance · 10/04/2023 19:11

I’m currently giving my teens hot cross buns as extra filling food after their sandwich but before cake. It’s not a substitute for a sandwich.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/04/2023 18:28

You'd all hate me, I make cheese sandwiches and bacon butties using hot cross buns at this time of year. It's only for Easter, after all 🐽

I do too! Not bacon obviously because that's something only a madman would do, but Cheshire cheese goes perfect well with hot cross buns.

Skybluepinky · 10/04/2023 19:20

No it’s not a healthy option or the equivalent of a sandwich.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 10/04/2023 19:21

My little daughter would agree with you but I'd agree with your husband.
But in the grand scheme of things does it really matter as long as your child has a full tummy 🤷‍♀️

MyopicBunny · 10/04/2023 19:23

Hot cross bun is fine. It's not like you're proposing to give him this every day.

Bread isn't any good for you really.

MRex · 10/04/2023 19:25

It depends how old the DC are, how much they like to eat, whether they are overweight etc. Generally I'd say it doesn't matter for one day and would replace the sandwich. You need extra items for the holiday club snack breaks, so ignore anyone saying to leave out the snack. I might add some ham or another protein instead of biscuits plus some tomatoes and olives to balance it, but then my DS is a meat fiend and would prefer that to biscuits anyway..

SophiaSW1 · 10/04/2023 19:27

I agree with your husband

Bread isn't any good for you really.

Bread has iron, fibre, B vitamins, protein, calcium, thiamine, manganese and zinc. Seeded bread has some seeds for extra nutrients. Children actually need carbs for energy, especially running around at a holiday camp. No food is good for you taken in excess, and no food is so terrible that you can't have it in moderation. Have a balanced diet and avoid creating complexes about entire food groups!

It's bready so I would replace the sandwich with it. Unlikely to eat a sandwich and HXB together

This is my stance too. It’s sweetened bread, so it replaces the bread roll part of the cheese roll.

Bread is absolutely fine as part of a balanced diet.

MyopicBunny · 10/04/2023 19:36

Yes I do agree that children need carbs. But really my point is that switching a sandwich for a hot cross bun for one day really isn't a big issue imo

Tiredtoday22 · 10/04/2023 19:37

I'd say it replaces the sandwich. But I'm intrigued as I always eat them toasted and hot/warm...if you're putting it in the lunchbox do you still toast it?! Can you eat them without toasting them?!
