Does hot cross bun in child’s lunchbox replace sandwich?

DC normally has cheese roll, fruit, veg sticks, crisps, pack of little biscuits. Tomorrow I propose replacing cheese roll with buttered HXB and chunk of cheese. DH thinks replace biscuits with HXB.

Who IBU?

It's a bit sweet to replace the sandwich but as it's doughy id maybe pack a lighter savoury such as a few crackers with some cheese and cucumber/pepper then hxb

SouthLondonMum22 · 10/04/2023 17:45

I'd say it replaces the roll.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 10/04/2023 17:46

Too much sugar. Make a cheese roll as normal (and eat the HXB yourself).

Okunevo · 10/04/2023 17:47

It replaces both the bread and the biscuits. A sandwich as well would be too much bread, and another sweet treat isn't necessary.

MagpiePi · 10/04/2023 17:48

If it is a bought one then it probably is very sweet. I made 12 hot cross buns which had 1 tablesoon of sugar in the dough and maybe another 2 tsp in the glaze, which I didn't use up. So 2 or 3g of sugar per bun.

Hot cross buns with cheese are delicious.

Overthebow · 10/04/2023 17:48

Replace both the sandwich and the biscuits. It’s too sugary to have biscuits as well, b it too much like bread for the sandwich. So hot cross bun, cheese, veg sticks

This is a good idea, if swapping the bread for hcb then swap sweet biscuits for crackers.

For one day, I don’t think it matters. 😅

thegrain · 10/04/2023 17:53

I wouldn't want a cheese roll and a hot cross bun

JudgeRudy · 10/04/2023 17:53

I'd replace both! The HXB is carby, sugary and big...plus you're adding butter. You have veg/fruit so a few chunks of cheese sounds fine or how about a hardboiled egg (with a face on it) if you want to continue the easter theme.

Foodieasfuck · 10/04/2023 17:55

I see them as either breakfast or a sweet treat

LucifersLight · 10/04/2023 17:55

The more important thing is to reduce the carbs and increase the protein really.

You are proposing to increase the sugar / carbs as a HXB is a bun with extra sugar which is more unhealthy.

AgnesX · 10/04/2023 17:55

Swap the biscuits...HXB is the sweet thing.

Rainbowshit · 10/04/2023 17:58

Swap for biscuits.

This is really surprising! They’re basically bread with a little bit of sugar in the dough and a few raisins, no? Bit of syrup glaze.

just checked and only 40 more kcals than the bread rolls I use. 17g more sugar which is 2 of those mini boxes of raisins. Hmm

@meaniemaybe 17g of sugar is like 3 teaspoons!

This is going to bring out all the mumnetters who have a terrible relationship with food. 😬

As a one off, this!

Nutritionally, probably closer to the biscuits but in terms of what I'd actually want to eat, textures and so on, probably the sandwich.

Isledelaray · 10/04/2023 18:01

I'd just put it all in there if it fits. It's one day, it'll be fine.

But if not, I'd probably take out the biscuits.

However, when my toddler hasn't eaten much lunch, I often give him a brioche or welshcake to replace the carb from sandwiches. So I see both sides really!

Hankunamatata · 10/04/2023 18:03

Ditch biscuits and sandwich.
That seems lots of food if primary age. Mine have a full sandwich and bit of fruit.

JMSA · 10/04/2023 18:05

I like your thinking, but it doesn't replace a sandwich or normal roll Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/04/2023 18:05

I eat hot cross buns with cheese like a sandwich.

MaryShelley1818 · 10/04/2023 18:11

Replaces the sandwich - just for size/how filling.
Ignore the ridiculous sugar comments, it's a hot cross bun at Easter, some people are setting their kids up with terrible relationships with food.

Pseudonamed · 10/04/2023 18:12

I have one here that will not eat a sandwich and I regularly send a hot cross bun. Would rather they did not starve. Horrifically fussy though.

ConkerBonkers · 10/04/2023 18:12

Yes it replaces the sandwich. Otherwise it's just two massive helpings of heavy carb, no?

GoodChat · 10/04/2023 18:12

I wouldn't replace a sandwich with a hot cross bun. Give the kid the sandwich and have a toasted hot cross bun for your breakfast tomorrow!
