To not care at all about the King’s coronation?

northernsunshine · 10/04/2023 16:11

This is going to infuriate a lot of people but I think we are a nation of fools.

does anyone else really not care? I’m surprised given what’s happening in France there isn’t more opposition to the coronation.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl, the Americans I met who came over for the jubilee were entirely delightful, huge fans of the RF and knew far more about their history than I did. They were thrilled to be here, intent on having a great time and spent a huuuuuge amount of money......

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 10/04/2023 18:13

Given that 27 other countries have a monarchy, and our RF attracts huge amounts of tourism, I suspect you’re very wrong.

There are 195 countries in the world, so 27 is a small percentage.

How does one not accept a Bank Holiday? 😂 Refuse to call it one? Turn up to a closed office?

I’m just imagining a load of po-faced MNers rapping on their office doors shouting “I REFUSE this bank holiday, let me in!”

That post was in response to someone saying outsiders must look in and feel embarrassed at Brits for having a monarchy. Given that around 1 in 9 countries have their own monarchy however I highly doubt that is true. My point is still relevant.

Over 50 of the other 168 countries are dictatorships. Then add the extreme right/left wing populists and a constitutional monarchy such as ours starts to look pretty good.

HelpMeGetThrough · 10/04/2023 22:45

I'm not at all fussed about it, will probably watch some of it, as OH will have it on TV.

100% up for the day off though.

tigger1001 · 10/04/2023 22:48

Not fussed about the coronation at all. Will try to avoid as much of the tv coverage as possible.

Will be working on the Monday as normal.

maddy68 · 10/04/2023 22:50

Don't give a shot other than it gives people extra time off to enjoy as they wish

blubberball · 10/04/2023 22:52

I can't get into it.

Blossomtoes · 10/04/2023 22:53

I’m looking forward to it. All that pageantry is one of the very few things this country excels at.

Againstmachine · 10/04/2023 23:12

Most of the countries that posters on MN hold up as bastions of good living and happiness are constitutional monarchies (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium) - there must be something in it......

The tourism angle is true - during the platinum jubilee I organised several tours for large groups of Americans who had come over specifically to experience the jubilee.

The difference between visiting Versailles and visiting Sandringham, Balmoral etc is that the latter are living, breathing homes - Versailles is grand on an epic scale but as dead as a door nail. France has more visitors because it's easier to get to for western Europeans, and the UK doesn't have much of a ski industry.....Grin.

Meanwhile if ignoring the fanatical middle east rulers, but thats okay then.

Your evidence in anecdotal not true facts.

How does a monarchy in any way stop anyo of those things happening? Lots of those disctatorships or extreme right wing governments have monarchs.

It doesn’t but I imagine that that poster’s point was that other countries who apparently ‘must be embarrassed’ for the UK aren’t really in a position to when they are part of a dictatorship

Not 'lots' considering as pointed out upthread there are only 27 monarchies, and I wouldn't count UK, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Canada, NZ, Australia etc as dictatorships.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 10/04/2023 22:14

@Ilovemydoggie total nonsense.

Thank you for your royal proclamation 🤣🤣

Againstmachine · 10/04/2023 23:25

So you ignore outside Europe then

RocketIceLollie · 10/04/2023 23:26

I don't mind the royal family but I can tell this is gonna be a very drawn out boring ceremony. I'll just watch the news in the evening.

Grapewrath · 10/04/2023 23:27

Couldn’t give a shit but glad of the extra day off

HungryMum101 · 10/04/2023 23:32

We are having a party and it will be a royalty free zone. I don’t know why we tolerate them.

Was that aimed at me? Last time I looked, Canada, Australia, NZ weren't in Europe. Neither are Jamaica, Japan, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Tonga.

PurplePlayhouse · 10/04/2023 23:40

I care as much about Charlie as he does about me.

My opinion is that he's a pampered, spoilt brat who only appears to care about himself.

This …cannot wait and daughters partner who was in a very well known rock band has said he has finally grown up and looking forward to it .

northernsunshine · 10/04/2023 23:46

I absolutely love a bank holiday 🙌 but it just makes me a bit depressed that the public so readily celebrates an institution we are forced to financially support. It ensures a rigid class structure remains in place and has been built of the back of colonialism. It’s all just a bit uncomfortable for me! But hey, extra day off work. Who am I to complain 😂

My Union flag will be flying proudly here in my few acres of Scotland. We are having a Coronation party, at the last count 53 people had RSVP'd, so it will be some shindig. The coronation partywear has been ordered ,Champagne will flow and i am trying out MD2020 cocktails and the Buckfast trifle will be on the table.

😂😂
