This is going to infuriate a lot of people but I think we are a nation of fools.

does anyone else really not care? I’m surprised given what’s happening in France there isn’t more opposition to the coronation.

If it was pay per view only for TV coverage, and there was a charge to watch it live in London, would anyone here be willing to pay?

I know those who love this sort of thing would, but I doubt many others would including myself!

Making the coronation pay per view is totally hypothetical because it would be, in RF terms, unconstitutional to restrict a public event to the public.

But given people still line the streets for miles to see a coffin, you may be surprised by how far people will go to get a glimpse of the RF who have, if nothing else, provided us with fascination (rightly or wrongly) for decades. Centuries even

Ilovemydoggie · 10/04/2023 22:09

Without the royal family, Britain would lose a lot of its presence on the World stage.

I have no idea why people are so keen to remove one of the few things that is marketable, unique and interesting about this country.

Totally loving the folks who pretend not to care but rhen click on a link to read and respond. It’s the very definition of caring 😂

Well, it's a thread about NOT caring, so like-minded people may well click on it, yes.

Also, if people feel strongly about a subject, they may want to air their view on it. Pretty standard stuff really.

Think what you like.
I bet you are going to still accept the free bank holiday though!

Stupid comment. We can’t exactly give the Bank Holiday back, it’s not a cash payment. OP I don’t give a flying fuck - I hope the monarchy dissolves in my lifetime.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 10/04/2023 22:13

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl not foolish and deluded - it’s fact. Tourists would visit the UK regardless.

You can pretend that they wouldn’t but you’d be the deluded one.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 10/04/2023 22:14

@Ilovemydoggie total nonsense.

I never said they wouldn’t visit the UK if there was no RF. Please stop making things up to prove your point. I actually said you can’t say the RF has a small bearing on tourism when you see the numbers that turn out for royal visits and events.

Trying to convince people that they are relevant might be something Cams would do alright.

Anyway am just having a bit of banter with you. Nothing serious.

A number of those country's are quasi fascist rulers.

The tourism angle isn't true people would still visit due to the history of the monarchy, Franch has way more tourists than the UK despite having no monarchy.

We should be past having people who due to a accident of birth are in those roles.

Most of the countries that posters on MN hold up as bastions of good living and happiness are constitutional monarchies (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium) - there must be something in it......

The tourism angle is true - during the platinum jubilee I organised several tours for large groups of Americans who had come over specifically to experience the jubilee.

The difference between visiting Versailles and visiting Sandringham, Balmoral etc is that the latter are living, breathing homes - Versailles is grand on an epic scale but as dead as a door nail. France has more visitors because it's easier to get to for western Europeans, and the UK doesn't have much of a ski industry.....Grin.

They may not be relevant to you, or many others, but they’re relevant to enough people that it seemingly matters.

Although I do like a G&T but only fags if in the pub 😁

Frabbits · 10/04/2023 22:17

The royals should be nothing more than a tourist attraction.

Continuing with a system where the HOS is there because their dad shagged their mum is patently fucking ridiculous.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 10/04/2023 22:19

@Coxspurplepippin thats not how facts and stats work I’m afraid. Just because thriving social democracies have a constitutional monarch (all very different from ours btw) does not mean that monarchs are essential for a social democracy 🙄. And the fact that you organised a couple of tours for some Americans doesn’t mean the tourism industry would die without the royals 🙄😬.

In a former role I used to organise events and did 3 royal events (opening of a fire station and what not). The local tourism and economy absolutely boomed. food trucks, charities, hotels, local shops saw a huge influx and were extremely grateful because people came from miles away to watch the events. Rightly or wrongly, the RF do pique people’s interest and their presence draws crowds. Why? Well, who knows. I support the RF but the thought of queueing for a day to see a coffin would be the last thing I’d want to do. And unless I had a day off and was on the area anyway I wouldn’t likely go to see a royal visit. Having said that, We are going to London for the coronation because we got a cheap deal and me and DH are well overdue getting boozy just the 2 of us in a big crowd and it seems a good excuse as any!

RampantIvy · 10/04/2023 22:22

I'm not interested. But that's fine. It doesn't make those who are interested fools. Do you often take your disinterest in stuff to be a mark of superiority?

Grin

As for the nation of fools, I agree, but not the view on the Coronation, but a decision in 2016.

Well said @LlynTegid

I live on a hill, and we are having a beacon lit in front of our house again. I enjoy a sense of occasion.

In fairness, modern day royals are essentially a big PR machine. They don’t rule, they have little say or purpose in anything other than kissing babies and cutting ribbons. But it works.

In the last village we loved the street parties got royal weddings and jubilees were absolutely incredible. You don’t have to be a royalist to enjoy and good piss up with your neighbours!

'And the fact that you organised a couple of tours for some Americans doesn’t mean the tourism industry would die without the royals'

Oh, my, I didn't think I'd written in my post that the tourism industry would die without the royals.

Monarchs might not be essential for a social democracy, but an elected head of state is no even less of a guarantee we'd have a decent person in the role - heaven knows there's enough evidence of that around the world. And given our recent record in electing officials I'd say our chances are less than zero.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 10/04/2023 22:33

cafecreme · 10/04/2023 17:09

I’ve gone from quite liking the royals to being indifferent in the space of a couple of years. I don’t think it’s just the late Queen going but more the state of this country (especially since 2016) and the inertia to challenge anything, while still clinging to the old ideas.

It’s also an obscene amount of money during a cost of living crisis. An out of touch distraction for a poorly governed country.

cafecreme - This is exactly how I feel.

SammyScrounge · 10/04/2023 22:33

I'm looking forward to it. I'll probably park myself in my chair for hours so that I miss nothing.
It is the latest coronation in a long long line of coronations, a historical event providing continuity of a British identity. The pageantry, as always, will be fabulous. The enthusiasm of the crowds will.be contagious. Fly the flag and cheer the King!

How does one not accept a Bank Holiday? 😂 Refuse to call it one? Turn up to a closed office?

Daisybuttercup12345 · 10/04/2023 22:35

I don't care what anyone else thinks. I think my own thoughts and don't need approval from a bunch of strangers on MN lol
