This is going to infuriate a lot of people but I think we are a nation of fools.

does anyone else really not care? I’m surprised given what’s happening in France there isn’t more opposition to the coronation.

I am not voting on this as its only your opinion and you are not BU to have an opinion

dephlogisticated · 21/04/2023 09:23

I couldn't give a shit! In fact I'm actively annoyed by the whole bloody thing and it just makes me feel more alienated and out of step with conventional culture right now!

Neededanewuserhandle · 21/04/2023 09:26

I honestly don't care - and by that I mean I won't be watching any of it, but I also don't mind it.

My sole irritation so far was a studio guest on radio4 who kept saying "King Charles is going to be Coronated" but even that wasn't her fault.

AllIeveknewonlyou · 21/04/2023 09:29

I just had a thought, supermarkets and public transport will still be open won't they? 😱

user1471538283 · 21/04/2023 09:33

Oh me neither. I'm not a Royalist and it is too much now. It is going to cost a fortune when we are drowning in an economic recession. It is a diversion tactic though trying to keep us all happy. I just find it insulting.

StupidFaces · 21/04/2023 09:35

The only time I’ll care about this absolute circus is when people start voicing their opposition to the monarchy seriously. I’d love to see the panic in their faces when they realise their time as over-privileged lazy bastards is coming to an end

Zhougzhoug · 21/04/2023 09:35

Hardly anyone I've met is remotely arsed. Bank holidays are shit for self-employed people. It's close to my birthday and makes it harder to go away for the weekend. Also we should chop their heads off hth

Helendee · 21/04/2023 09:35

I can’t wait. I’m having family around for a party during the ceremony and we are decorating the house in and outside.
Bring it on!

thefamous5 · 21/04/2023 09:37

It's fine not to be interested. It's fine not to agree with it.

It doesn't make people who are interested fools.

I obviously missed the memo, so serious question: why are we only having the coronation now? A bit late, no? It's not like they had to spend months choosing the new monarch. I mean, even I knew who it was going to be.

Is it because the supermarkets needed time to stock up on flags and bunting and get their orders in for commemorative biscuit tins?

It’s because it’s a celebration so there has to be an appropriate period of time for the royal family to mourn the last one before they openly celebrate the new one. Traditionally the royals don’t have weddings or big celebrations for a period after the death.

Plus the security arrangements, travel arrangements and organising of calendars of other heads of state, royals and politicians takes time.

Some people will care a lot and others won't
They divide opinions, but I think that people would rather have this set up than a President tbh. I'm often surprised at how much support they do have, even amongst some younger people

Benmac · 21/04/2023 10:37

Obscene amount of money when the country is on the bones of it's arse.
I am going abroad for the week to avoid the non stop sycophantic media reports.

The amount it will bring in in tourism far outweighs the cost. But lucky you being able to pop abroad on a whim when the country is on the bones of its arse

Grin

A lot of posters on here are protesting too much aren't they?
Most people who genuinely don't care just don't even discuss it.

Tourist from EU countries have already gone down in numbers. You now need a passport and I know several people in Germany who don't own one as you can travel in the EU with just your identity card.

I work in central London and the amount of foreign languages I hear has gone down a lot. Pre Covid I did "spot the tourist" when sitting outside but there is mainly now US and Asian ones who stay for a day or two.

And the last place I want to be in May is central London if I would be visiting.

You always needed a passport to come here from the EU.

Neededanewuserhandle · 21/04/2023 11:25

(Except Ireland, where you still don't).

No, my identity card was fully sufficient until Brexit. My mum and my PIL stopped having passports when Germany re-unified.

Exactly Zhougzhoug - two bank holiday mondays. Have a bank holiday off says the king - let them eat cake!

Yes I believe a lot of young people in particular don't even discuss it.

SlashBeef · 21/04/2023 11:45

I was discussing this with my mum yesterday. I feel like I should make a big deal out of this for my kids. People talk about the Queens coronation as such a happy exciting time and I'd quite like to experience that but I just can't muster up the enthusiasm. I suppose it was a completely different context back then and post-war Britain was thrilled to have something big to celebrate. King Charles just feels...flat.

DoormatBob · 21/04/2023 12:08

I would consider myself pro-monarchy but have no interest in the coronation. I don't intend to watch it as I don't see any reason to?

Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned but I liked the Queen, and I really liked our National Anthem, the whole notion of God Save The Queen rather than some other generic song.

Charles just doesn't really capture me in any way, I certainly have no patriotic feeling that I should protect this other bloke.

Inkanta · 21/04/2023 12:13

DH goes to football matches where they play the national anthem. He says the singing is very half hearted now. Not like when the queen was alive, and he doesn't feel right singing it.

Doesn't feel right? I know football fans are a special breed, but I'd hope they have the wherewithal to change the lyrics from Queen to King.

People felt a sense of duty towards the Queen, may well be because she was female, but she was respected and seen as precious to the country. (Pro monarchy viewpoint obviously).

Charles doesn't have that. He is just some bloke who had a dysfunctional relationship with his wife, both cheating, nothing notable to mind about him. There is no sense of duty towards him as a king (for me).
