This is going to infuriate a lot of people but I think we are a nation of fools.

does anyone else really not care? I’m surprised given what’s happening in France there isn’t more opposition to the coronation.

I am not remotely interested in watching. I would prefer there not be a royal family. But I don’t get het up about it. I see them as a minor irritation we have to live with. Like parking restrictions.

The people I know who are least politically aware and least intelligent seem to be the most pro-Royal and will be waving flags etc. Wonder if there is some link there. Probably not.

I feel sorry for other heads of state. Who have just attended a funeral and are now being invited to fly back again for another day of British pomp and ceremony. I have visions of them trying to create decent excuses to get out of it; I don’t think parents’ evenings and a friend’s clashing 50th will cut it.

And as a random point, France has more visitors because it’s better. We have very few decent cities in the UK, a smattering of sightseeing destinations that will appeal to international tourists and are weather is crap! I don’t think Royals in any country are a huge draw.

@allthegoodusernameshavegone Just saw you quoted my post, interesting you feel the same. I thought it was going to be someone shouting at me, usually is Smile

Perhaps it might rain

BelindaMelinda · 12/04/2023 10:36

I'm happy to have the extra day of holiday. That's about it.

For anyone who has been told they don't get an extra day of leave in 2023 I'd check the wording in your holiday entitlement in your contract yourself, to make sure.

If the wording is 'X days including BH', you're stuffed. If it's 'X days plus BH' then your employer is contractually obliged to give you an extra days leave. I wouldn't take their word for it!

GanjaDhin · 12/04/2023 14:02

I've noticed in the news they're saying that it is going to be a two-week affair as far as TV is concerned with loads of coverage...Probably like we had when Elizabeth and Philip died...God help us.

At work we get 33 days holiday including bank holidays. So these extra royal bank holiday are taken out of standard year entitlement. Most people are pretty pissed if at having to take another day of holiday in May.

I get 36 days including bank holidays,. Retail so can take them whenever I want. We were given an extra day last year and same again this year.
Your employer's are taking the piss.

I obviously missed the memo, so serious question: why are we only having the coronation now? A bit late, no? It's not like they had to spend months choosing the new monarch. I mean, even I knew who it was going to be.

Is it because the supermarkets needed time to stock up on flags and bunting and get their orders in for commemorative biscuit tins?

If you think about how long it takes to organise the average wedding, nine months to organise a coronation seems pretty reasonable.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 20/04/2023 23:08

You wouldn’t believe the security arrangements needed. Never mind anything else.

Fair point, but they're the royal family, they can get anything done. Snap of a finger. If Charles wanted to rename London 'Digestive' they'd be changing all the signs tomorrow and the maps and atlases would be redrawn and printed by Sunday.

Things take time. Unless you’re God and perform miracles everything takes time. As I spent my entire career explaining to self important dickheads who wanted the impossible yesterday in the mistaken belief that I was some kind of omnipotent magician.

World and known universe: 7 days.
Coronation (one person): 24 hours, max.

reluctantbrit · 21/04/2023 07:17

The UK is the only European country who still does a full blown coronation ceremony. All others have very simple ceremonies, signing of papers and swearing an oath.

Maybe the balcony apperance and a coach procession.

So, in a way it's interesting from a cultural historical view and I will watch it with this in mind.

Saying that, I will have to do with replays, DD will be on a paddle board in the middle of the Medway and I think watching her trying to not fall in will be also entertaining.

I’m Scottish and looking forward to my holiday Monday off, I’ll probably watch some of the Coronation too, it’s a huge part of history in the making.

Snap!

Badbudgeter · 21/04/2023 07:19

I don’t care either. My work is open but we can have a day off in lieu later on. Tbh it’s just another day when the schools close and life is stressful/ inconvenient.

Deliaskis · 21/04/2023 07:25

YANBU to not care, YABVU to call those that do fools. Caring or not caring doesn't make anybody better/ smarter/ dreadful/ dumber.

Pugdogmom · 21/04/2023 07:59

Not a fan of Royalty, in particular our new King and Queen, and will be doing something else on the day
Can't get het up about it. If people want to have an excuse to have their friends and neighbours round for tea and scones, who am I to judge?

AllIeveknewonlyou · 21/04/2023 08:05

I'm looking forward to it. Not in any passionate way, just to watch the ceremony and eat nice food.

PrangKdcu · 21/04/2023 08:07

I’m completely indifferent as are most people I know. Won’t be watching any coverage or attending a street party.

Inkanta · 21/04/2023 08:23

I'm no longer a royalist anymore and not keen on Charles and Camilla. I imagine I will switch on the TV to watch - out of intrigue. On the other hand I don't want to watch either because I know I will get a heart sink.

WickedSerious · 21/04/2023 08:27

I'll be rearranging my fridge magnets.

bellabasset · 21/04/2023 08:38

@happinessischocolate 30 years ago I didn't get paid holiday, then the law was changed to 3 weeks, then 4 weeks ie 20 days for 5 day weeks and then bank Holidays became mandatory so it became 5.6 weeks. When I did salaries and holiday entitlement I added an extra day for events like the Royal Wedding etc. It's not necessarily people are Royalists but they just have time off so it's an excuse to enjoy the day

RampantIvy · 21/04/2023 09:19

Deliaskis · 21/04/2023 07:25

Or morally superior.
I agree with you.

@bellabasset paid holidays have always been a legal requirement since I started work in 1977. Where were you 30 years ago that they weren't?
