Dalai llama ask a child to suck his tongue

Has anyone seen the new video of the Dalai Llama asking a child to suck his tongue. Yes. It sounds bizarre. But it is in the news right now. The video is out there. And the dalai llama is apologising on social media now

Im devastated! I went to see the Dalai Llama in India. He gave a speech on accepting and loving everyone, and that it didn't matter what religion we are. I always told people that it was one of the highlights of my life.

I went through life thinking he was a good person, that he was one of the good ones. To see this today, makes me think oh no is he yet another abuser.

Some people have remarked about this video that sticking your tongue out at someone is a greeting in Tibet.

However - the Dalai Llama kisses the child on the lips in the video, and asks the child to suck his tongue. It does not look right at all.

He has apologised on twitter now.

What do you all think?

Throwaway account because as an abuse survivor I find this upsetting.
Even if the child is going along with things, he cannot consent. He isn't old enough. There's a power imbalance between a schoolchild and a celebrity. He's in an embarrassing situation. He may be having a freeze/fawn reaction. He may have been groomed and abused already, perhaps by other guru figures. Most importantly, for me, even if the Dalai Lama is being mischievous, it's the kind of play that grooms. The next dodgy person approaching the child may not be content with a forced kiss, or playing, or pretending to play.

@Levadia

This whole episode has been massively overblown.

I wonder if you would still say this if it was your little boy he asked to suck his tongue.

You won't get an honest answer to that question.

I also think the ethnicity of the victim is a factor. As it's a young Indian boy, he's collateral damage in the race for damage limitation.

ashitghost · 12/04/2023 02:02

Nonce. Simple.

Yep. I thought exactly the same Sad

I agree with all of this. It's quite comparable to Michael Jackson's treatment of men (then boys) who felt so star struck by him that they believed they were in love with him. He abused his power massively. And, to this day there are people who will try to say MJ was innocent.

I am really disgusted by the posters who think that wondering whether dementia was a factor means you are a racist pedophile apologist/collaborator who doesn't care about the child involved.
Such judgmental bollocks.

MyopicBunny · 11/04/2023 22:01

I was discussing this with my adult dd.

She said that the fact he did this in public suggests that he may have got away with a lot worse in private. I agree with her.

I am sick of this nonsense that people are peddling about tongues not being sexual.

What's the difference between a French kiss and sucking someone's tongue?

The only time someone has sucked my tongue is during quite intense sex.

You can reassure your adult dd that 'behind closed doors' there are only adult monks - no junior monks and no visitors

MyopicBunny · 12/04/2023 08:03

So we're led to believe. Unless you live with the guy there is no way that you would know. People with such influence are pretty much untouchable.

I'm really disgusted by the posters who seem to have been trying to excuse what happened or suggest it's not that big a deal. And there are definitely some who have done this.

I agree that people refuse to imagine how they'd feel if it was their child.

See, if an 87 year old random man at a bus stop asked a little boy to duck his tongue, there is no way anyone would be saying 'oh perhaps the poor chap had dementia'

I dont hype people, its like the Gandi guy painted as some sort of saint really abused his wife.

To me seems every person who is in a high position be it a politician or a religious person they are wierdos of some sort.

GingerbreadBaking · 12/04/2023 08:15

I don't normally watch Ben Shapiro, he was suggested on this matter on YouTube, he said if it was the Pope the media would react very differently, he is Jewish and listed the religious leaders who would not given a hard time. This is not good for safeguarding.

Do you understand the difference between 'excuse' and 'possible reason for'?

Two entirely different concepts for most people

MyopicBunny · 12/04/2023 08:20

Some people have definitely excused it. Not everyone 'some'.

And even those not doing so would never have suggested dementia could be the reason for this if any other 87 year old man did this.

Absolutely and utterly false. I think MOST of us would suggest dementia if it were another 87 year old man.

onirgellep · 12/04/2023 08:31

@MyopicBunny I've not really seen anyone 'excusing' this

And in your scenario of a different 87 yr old 'at a bus stop' don't you think the police would most likely be looking at their missing person list - particularly which care homes had 'lost' a resident? Rather than local SO

You really really want to think the worst of us don’t you? Sorry to disappoint you but I would definitely be considering dementia in any 87yr old, man or woman, who acted so bizarrely in public. At a probability of 1 in 6 as compared to 1 in 200 for pedophilia, it certainly makes more sense to consider dementia first and foremost.

Several pages ago on this thread someone asked me the same question in terms of would I call the police if some old man at a bus stop asked my own child to ‘suck his tongue’. I responded, yes I would call the police but that they should know that the police will consider dementia and contact social care. That the police are not going to haul an 87yr old away in handcuffs. And why? because dementia is the most common cause of such bizarre behaviour in the elderly.

The Dalai Lama is not at all comparable to Michael Jackson.

Dalai Lama has consistently led a moral life free of any hint of such perversion for over 87yrs. He has now done one bizarre incident of behaviour wholly consistent with dementia.

Michael Jackson had child abuse victims coming forward since he was 35. He built a fun park on the grounds of his mansion to get children to come closer to him. He had little boys over at his for sleep overs where they all slept in one bed in a room with cameras.

Me too. I mean the whole “I think the ethnicity of the boy is a factor…” is a really disgusting thing to say and shows more about the minds of those alleging it than those of us for whom it’s not a factor at all.

MyopicBunny · 12/04/2023 08:49

You know this because it's what you've been told. But you have no idea of his whereabouts in reality.

It certainly seems to have touched a nerve. However, I think the poster who made reference to this was talking about the Dalai Lama's PR team and spokespeople.

“Led to believe”! It’s his physical address and he’s not had visitors for fifteen years at least! It’s all well documented. But you’d rather ignore the evidence in favour of your own tawdry and perverted imaginings.

MyopicBunny · 12/04/2023 08:52

Well documented by whom?

MyopicBunny · 12/04/2023 08:54

I'm not the one who asked a child to suck my tongue, but i'm the one with perversions?? Hmm

There's mental gymnastics for you 😂
