Yes, will decide on which mug to use before I get up to make a drink.
Can't possibly use a mug that has tea written on the outside for coffee, etc.

Will never willingly use a mug that doesn't have a white inside.
One workplace has uniform mugs with pale coloured insides - I just about tolerate those.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2023 12:38

I adore mugs , I have favorite ones and often just buy another cheap one to add to my mug pile! It has to be white inside as the hot drink tastes better.
The thread about the mugs in a car was astonishing as their partner could just buy a travel mug with a lid. Having crockery in a car is madness.

FragranceFree · 10/04/2023 12:38

What if the coloured inside is the same as the outside? So a nice glazed pottery piece for coffee? I can just about do that!

I did a pottery course a few years ago and now absolutely adore large mugs with unusual glazes

I hate mismatching cupboards of ugly mugs. Especially novelty mugs, a huge sports direct one, and some thin bone china mug with a twee poem about how much nanny loves you <shudder>

Thelnebriati · 10/04/2023 12:42

MY favourite mug came from a charity shop. Its the perfect size, thickness and weight. Obviously I can never use it in case I break it.

Starlin · 10/04/2023 12:48

Oh, I do love a good mug. I absolutely adore Glosters pottery as their mugs are a "proper" size and feel really good to hold.

Yes, I am that sad that it makes a difference!

I LOVE mugs!! I want one of those ornament cabinets, like our grandmas had, but mine full of mugs. Mugs, mugs, mugs.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/04/2023 13:04

Don't like pottery mugs - bone china are best, although I have several that are heavier china.
The work mugs are the same colour inside and out; still not over keen.

Don't have many matching mugs - some are gifts, others I remember where I bought them (often end up buying when I'm away from home if I don't like the mugs provided by the hotel or accommodation)

IHeartGeneHunt · 10/04/2023 13:05

I like big mugs. I've got two fancy ones and the rest are charity shop, I'm not bothered what's on them as long as it's not a motivational message!

Love this one!

We have an unspoken hierarchy of mugs. You know you're in trouble if you get the cheap, chunky The Who mug.

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 10/04/2023 13:17

I love a massive mug!
The only 2 I don’t like are DH’s crypto design and the star wars one. I never use those.
My favourite is a massive Xmas coco cola mug that’s great for tea.
Also have a lovely shaped portmerion mug that is thick and feels perfect to hold.

I had a beautiful big mug intricately designed by my DH with a photo of my dead dog on it. I was balancing too many things on a visit to my parents and dropped it getting out of the car, so it smashed. Still think of it regularly.

Bone china mug for the best cup of tea. Denby Craftsman style mug to keep my coffee hot.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 10/04/2023 13:30

We have just got a new kitchen and realised we have a Mug Problem. We had everyday crappy, don’t care if the kids break them mugs, nicer mugs, then special mugs (dh’s Emma Bridgewater bird mugs, his bone china one with an Edwin Collins sketch on, my new Snowy mug) we have got rid of the crappy ones, but the remainder fill two shelves. That’s crazy for two people.

Kvetching · 10/04/2023 13:33

I was just on ebay trying to find particular mugs that are no longer sold. This is because my son’s home from uni and he said he really misses them when he’s away! Yes, I am that sort of indulgent mother 😂

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 10/04/2023 13:35

Yep, mugs are immensely important - the right mug for the job, definitely! We have breakfast coffee mugs; mid-morning tea mugs (I have two depending on what type of tea (herbal) I'm having); lunch time drinks mugs; afternoon coffee mugs and special after-dinner hot chocolate mugs. They cannot be crossed over. Oh and also I have special mugs at work, and we have caravan-only mugs. No one has ever bought me a mug that comes up to scratch.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 10/04/2023 13:40

Oh, I love mugs! I don’t like matching sets, prefer individual mugs with their own character/story.
I like looking at mugs in shops but can’t really buy more as the mug cupboard is crammed. DD is similar, perhaps it’s genetic…..

HappyJellyBaby · 10/04/2023 13:45

Yes! A nice big bone China mug with a white inside. I have a lovely 1970s one with brown flowers on that came from my grans house. It's the only favourite to have survived DS's toddler years. DD seems like less of a smasher - so far . . .

MyMachineAndMe · 10/04/2023 13:53

My mug has beach huts on. I love beach huts and the seaside. DH has one with a Landrover on. We have a cupboard full of cups, mugs and glasses but only use one each.

ChrisPriss · 10/04/2023 13:53

Buying a new mug is one of my (many) obsessions and brings me such joy! I have too many really, but I do donate them to the charity shop on a regular basis.

Dfg15 · 10/04/2023 13:56

I broke my favourite mug a couple of months ago, I still miss it. It had pink flamingos and green foliage on, was so pretty 😟

FrenchTrellis · 10/04/2023 13:57

DH has a set of Denby mugs which are glazed black on the inside- these do not get used unless all the others are in the dishwasher! A cuppa definitely does not taste as good in them.

JennyForeigner · 10/04/2023 13:58

I have a pint mug, bone china, has to be tasteful. My current one has penguins because my son loves them. I only ever replace when one gets smashed and then I mourn it for months.

Otherwise we have Bridgwater, but they aren't big enough and the tea goes cold too quickly.

Lovecat · 10/04/2023 14:01

Yes! I have 2 mugs that are used only for my tea (both Emma Bridgewater) and 1 ancient Wilkos one with a fox on it that is reserved for instant coffee. If anyone else uses them I get unreasonably miffed. We once had a short-term lodger who decided to appropriate my fox mug as "hers" (as I was out when she moved in), and it used to give me The Rage whenever I saw her with it. Obviously I couldn't say anything because that would be ridiculous, right? So I just gritted my teeth until she finally moved out. She also unwittingly took my spot on the sofa. It was a long six months...

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/04/2023 14:02

My "heirloom" mug cane from a Chinese breakfast set, that lived at my grandparents 'a house. It is tiny, and has Humpty Dumpty on. I used to have to have my morning tea in my Alice in Wonderland mug, but that broke and after several months, I have weaned myself onto a big Cath Kidston stripey mug. My current favourite day-time mug is this one. It really does keep drinks warmer, longer.
