Bone China is a must

I want to love Emma Bridgewater... really really want to...but I just can't get on with the shape. Anybody got any recommendations?

My favourite is a port merion one, although I used to have an amazing Percy pig one until DD smashed it!

Have you tried the EB cocoa mugs? My DH prefers that shape!

HollyGolightly4 · 10/04/2023 22:04

No! I shall investigate...

I want to love Emma Bridgewater too but they are too small and don't feel quite right. Not delicate enough for a delicate tea day and not clumpy enough for a builder's tea day. Definitely off for cocoa too.

I've also found my people!
Love a good chunky pottery mug. None of that thin China stuff.

Dunoon mugs for tea, and straight sided mugs for coffee. Current favourites are Dartmoor and Exmoor coffee mugs, and Scottish-themed Dunoons. And yes, I too get piqued when someone else snaffles my preferred designs.

Builder's cups live in another cupboard, with thermos outdoor/travel cups -- in different shapes depending on which car it's going out in because not all cup holders fit all cups equally well.

My favourite mug is a Cath Kidston Christmas mug. I've had to put it away until December. Im genuinely upset. Need to find another I like as much.

Oooo my people! I use my Emma Bridgwater spotty 'Mrs' mug for coffee every morning, then one of my big 'Cat' mugs for tea later in the day (example attached!)

DH is very gung-ho with mugs and will make me a tea in a crappy easter egg mug which really annoys me.

I don't Grin. Cath Kidston, Emma Bridgewater etc just aren't my... cup of tea tbh. I like something a bit plainer or more abstract. Just not my style! I really want a nice bone china one to replace my fading alphabet one. Will have to shop around. So many of the nice designs are on pottery rather than bone china.

They’re not for me either

My best ones are Liberty various designs and coffee requires a different choice to tea or other

My annoying problem is that I really want to have a lovely mug for work, but I'm a teacher and I really have to use a lidded insulated travel mug rather than a normal mug, otherwise navigating corridors full of kids is a bit hazardous!

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 11/04/2023 17:22

I collect Emma Bridgewater pottery. Obviously I have to use the mugs. I have over a hundred now but about a third of those are Christmas ones which get rotated out about mid November. And some are on display with some of the other pottery. And some, like the spaniel ones in memory of my dear departed boy, are too precious to use and stay on the top shelf of the mug cupboard. I also have the cocoa mugs, cups and saucers and little mugs. And over forty teapots, although I used to have nearly sixty but I sold a couple of collections. I do have a couple of big dressers to display it all on.

I do actually like the EB mugs. They’re a decent size and cool the drink down to an immediately drinkable temperature without scalding your mouth like China cups do.

I love Cath Kidston Stanley mugs, so great for coffee.

My heart sinks when I’m served a drink in Emma Bridgewater mugs, just not a fan.

CatkinToadflax · 11/04/2023 17:33

20 years ago I worked for someone who insisted on having their tea served in a bone china mug. If it came in the wrong mug it was sent back. The rest of us thought she was bananas and eventually she removed herself from the tea and coffee rota and sorted her own refreshments!

20 years on, I agree with her…. I wouldn’t send it back if it was in the wrong mug (I now work from home so it’s irrelevant) but I’ve come to completely agree with her that tea tastes so much better in a bone china mug.

Also agree with the comments about mugs with coloured ‘innards’. It doesn’t taste right!

MarkWithaC · 11/04/2023 17:44

I love them. They're my weakness in charity shops. I recently found some Scion mugs for a couple of quid each and it made my week.

I like china, not stoneware, for tea. Don't mind for coffee. I can't bear tankard-style mugs or those that go in at the top. Or silly little handles that you can only get one finger through.

The big Cath Kidston mugs are a great shape and size for me.

AndrexPuppy · 11/04/2023 17:46

I like the EB aesthetic but I find that tea goes cold too quickly in it and coffee from my machine is too cold as soon as it's made if I use one (machine makes coffee at the perfect temp but it its crap in the mugs unless they are pre warmed). I also find that they craze like mad.

I'm a member of the bone china club. I like Rory Dobner's fine bone china mugs. No twiddly shapes, white insides and some nice illustrations. The ones without gold embellishment are also dishwasher safe.

What are those on the second shelf down, they look a but bigger. Love them to look at.

This was my favourite mug ever... I put it into the dishwasher to much and it's really faded, so I don't use it any more... 😭

I HAVE FOUND MY PEOPLE!! DH thinks I'm insane when he makes me a morning cuppa in the wrong mug and I won't drink it! I have a morning mug, a work mug, a nighttime mug. All different sizes for the right amount of tea required at that time of the day! I love a good custom mug too! Now off to look for another mug thanks to this thread.....

FragranceFree · 11/04/2023 18:07

Anthropology do lovely mugs but mine haven't lasted very well.
