I adore mugs - has to be proper mug for day in question and depends on drink.

Anyone else?

I bought a Dunoon “Golden Age of Sail” mug (not cheap, getting it sent to Australia) because I loved the design. Still do, but I never drink from it, because the flared top means the tea gets cold too quickly. Such a pity!

I read this as 'the golden age of the snail' 🤣

Bwahahaha!

If I had to look after a garden it would be the Golden Age of the Snail.

AndrexPuppy · 13/04/2023 11:54

I had a really cheesy London themed one by Dunoon, bought from a naff gift shop on the Cromwell Rd about 20 years ago. Sadly it had an accident about 10 years ago but it was fabulous for tea. @Catsmere 's Golden age of Sail pic has reminded me of how good it was, maybe I should buy another. I drink from EB and Rory Dobner at the mo, as mentioned previously. I find the EB is too chunky, tea gets cold in them and the glaze crazes. The Dobner ones are great but I do like a bit of colour.

I had friends over at the weekend, and one on them has their "own" mug here. It's chipped on the rim, but she won't let me bin it. I've also offered it to her to take home, but she said it's happy here 😁.

I've known her take it out of the dishwasher and wash it so she can use it.

We've also started making tea in a pot, with milk in a jug (charity shop finds) so we sit there with a very random selection of pottery enjoying a decent cup of tea.

My current obsession is commemorative mugs for the King's coronation. I have bought the two styles available from M&S - lovely fine porcelain, but sadly just a little too small.

red78hot · 27/04/2023 19:08

I'm really anal about mugs. One I have with tea with a meal. 1 I like my instant coffee in, latte mugs for well lattes in the tassimo, tall mugs for evening coffee or early morning coffee from tassimo while I feed baby his breakfast. Different mugs for Earl Grey.
Yeah I should probably get therapy 😅

""I'm fussy about handles. HAS to be big enough to get at least 3 fingers in, and has to feel solid in the hand.""

Same, but FOUR fingers. Have to be able to get FOUR fingers into the handle. And the mug must be LARGE. And white or at least pale inside. This is mug heaven for me.

We have a collection of bugs that we can't use, like the kissing one from St Lucia, my limited edition Emma Bridgewater one, ones we've been brought back from Greece. Our daily use mugs are mainly chipped.

mathanxiety · 27/04/2023 19:52

The family mugs have mushroomed so much that they've begun colonising the glassware shelf.

My favourites are a set of four pale aquamarine mugs that I bought for $1 apiece in a supermarket, a large white mug with a gorgeously detailed drawing of a rooster in black from the Dollar Store, a black one with 'Keep Calm and Demand Trial by Mortal Combat' on it, and a mug emblazoned with the flag of Chicago. DD3 is trying to make this one her own. I'm going to have to hide it before she ships out to grad school.

I'm seriously thinking about reorganising the entire china hutch just to make room for the mugs, but I'll wait to see how I'm doing after DD3 leaves with her sizeable collection of large, quirky mugs.

BrioNotBiro · 27/04/2023 19:54

I've had a set of the original Herdy sheep ones for over 20 years, each a different bright colour and broke the orange one last week 😪Gutted, as can't get that shape now.

purplecorkheart · 27/04/2023 19:58

In a summer shop as a teen there were only crappy little cups so we all brought our own mugs. One of the senior managers broke my cheap mug accidentally and replaced it with this lovely pale green pottery mug. It fits just right in my hand. Many many many years later I still have it

What is the difference between a mug and a cup?
Is a cup just those round teacups you use with a saucer?
I've never used the word 'mug'. They were all cups when I was growing up.

They're usually around half the size of a mug and are generally made from such as porcelain or bone china, so usually much thinner usually than a mug.
There are varying sizes of cups to suit the beverage being put in them, which is why you have tea cups and coffee cups.
Mugs come in various sizes too, usually normal size, pint size ( for builders brews ) and sports direct size ( for getting the fire brigade out to come and pump the tea from your house if you knock it over )

Bone china mug for my morning coffee: a Battersea Dogs and Cats Home mug purchased from M&S a couple of years ago. 😀

User158349890 · 27/04/2023 21:37

I have woodland and seasonal EB for coffee which I rotate according to season. DH likes Dunoon for his tea so we have Dunoon Funky Farm mugs which match various Dunoon canisters we have. I also have some china M&S Ditsy Floral for tea as I prefer tea in a china cup. We have a lot of mugs.

User158349890 · 27/04/2023 21:43

Oh, and DH has his watching Pointless mug which is a tall Dunoon one with all the chemical symbols on so he can cheat when there is a chemistry question which there often is

MrsDrDear · 27/04/2023 22:51

My absolute favourite morning coffee mug is this one.

was about to say AIBU - there was one a couple of weeks ago - but this is it😁

JMSA · 28/04/2023 00:24

Totally agree with the mug needing to be white on the inside.

IHateLegDay · 28/04/2023 00:31

My favourite mugs for tea are a kitkat mug and one I was for Chinese new year by a restaurant in 2014.
My favourite coffee mug is a Count Duckula mug.
My favourite latte mugs are from the Disney store. The little mermaid and Nightmare Before Christmas.
My favourite hot chocolate mug is anything massive and whimsical 😂

Mugs are serious business in our house 😂 I wouldn't dare use my DHs mugs and he wouldn't use mine 😂

ifIwerenotanandroid · 28/04/2023 01:10

I still use Kliban cat mugs from the 1980s. We've broken a few over the years & I wish I had all the designs that were ever made; but I love the ones we have left.

I'm also particularly fond of a grey mug with lots of different drawings of cats on it, by Lisa Buckridge. I came across it on a day out & chose it as a present: it was my last day out before the Covid lockdown, so it's kind of special for that reason, too.

CallieQ · 28/04/2023 01:15

I have a favourite mug for morning tea, mid morning coffee and afternoon tea Grin

Nat6999 · 28/04/2023 03:47

I'm just looking at Denby Azure Coat mugs, I know they are expensive, but they are beautiful. I've always had cheap none matching mugs, but for once I can afford better ones, they look perfect for a cup of builders tea. I insist in a glass mug for herbal tea, don't know why but it tastes better like that.

BiddyPop · 28/04/2023 09:43

I have a china mug in work for my tea. I have a squatter china mug for my tea at home.

But for coffee I have a chunkier pottery mug that I can cradle in my hands.

I have the azure Coast mugs, they were part of our wedding china. They are wider in the middle than at the top which I find annoying. But they are lovely chunky mugs and have lasted really well.
