Hi all.

I've been let down AGAIN. I genuinely don't know if I am being unreasonable here.

Meant to be going to the Lake District with a friend tomorrow, for 2 nights. Apartment booked and paid for; was waiting for friends half of payment.

She sent a text yesterday morning saying that she has a family commitment that she can't get out of so she's not coming. She asked for my bank details and has sent money to cover the apartment (including my half). Obviously I'm really very upset.

AIBU to go anyway?

I would give her half of the accommodation cost back, minus what she would have contributed in petrol, so you're not out of pocket.

If I go by that logic, she owes me more money ☺️

but you said she sent you the whole amount, your half and her half?

mycoffeecup · 11/04/2023 18:30

eg if the accommodation was 600 in all and she has sent you back 300 then you owe her 300 for your half.

but if her chunk of the petrol would have been 100, then you send her back 200

Maybe the cottage was cheap and the petrol was expensive I.e cottage was £300 for 2 nights. Petrol will cost £350 type thing.

fatimashortbread · 11/04/2023 18:36

No to half the money back - you need to pay for the apartment, she cancelled at the last minute. If she has annual travel insurance and it was a genuine emergency she may get some of her money back anyway.
Definitely go on holiday

CherryCokeFanatic · 11/04/2023 18:39

YABU you should stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives

RachaelN · 11/04/2023 18:41

Free holiday in peace! Enjoy!

bobster31 · 11/04/2023 18:42

Definitely go on your own! Or, give me a shout and I'll come and meet you - I live 1/2 hours away!

Solonge · 11/04/2023 18:42

Ask someone else you like for a free holiday…or just go alone…why wouldnt you?

Lcb123 · 11/04/2023 18:44

Don’t pay her back. Go on your own or find another friend/relative. And maybe don’t book anything else with said friend

rookiemere · 11/04/2023 18:49

I'm really glad you went OP. What's your plans tomorrow?

Yep. Accomodation was nice and cheap; Petrol will end up being more.

I suspect the 'emergency' is her DH being a twat cos he doesn't like me.

In that case, don’t give her half back. Enjoy the fully paid apartment. Is there anyone who can come with you last minute?

Thanks!

Given that it's now pouring with rain and meant to continue to pour with rain, I am going to book some museums!

Just because she paid in full doesn’t mean she can afford to, she was waiting for her friends half

The friend has sent ALL of the money to the OP’s bank account.

No why should you be out of pocket because she changed her mind the night before?

Absolutely not. Do you have another friend or relative who may be free at short notice who would like to go with you?

But op wouldn’t be out of pocket - she’d get the accommodation she’s paid for rather than making friend pay. Imagine this as a reverse:
”I had last minute family commitment that I HAD to attend to and therefore had to cancel a last minute mini break with a friend. I felt so bad I refunded all costs, mine and hers as we couldn’t go. However, I’ve now found out that she DID go anyway (and possibly took another friend) and hasn’t paid a penny - AIBU to expect her to pay for the mini break she had?”
I am sure that Op would then be the CF.
Op - If you don’t go, no refund. If you go, you ought to pay. You don’t return something for a refund and also get to keep the goods, even if the shop assistant was rude.

Scotslass171 · 11/04/2023 18:54

At least she paid for her half of the holiday

I'm snuggled on the sofa with a bottle of wine.

If the weather doesn't clear up, I'll have just as much of a nice time staying snuggled on the sofa for a couple of days 😄

I think you are looking at this all wrong.

When I started this thread, I genuinely didnt know what to do.

But you're ignoring the fact that I could not, under any circumstances have afforded to come to the Lake District ON MY OWN because of the petrol prices. I would not have booked this holiday without knowing I was coming with a friend and sharing the load.

She has cancelled. Her. Not me. SHE CANCELLED which meant I couldn't go on my much needed break (a break that I haven't had for nearly 5 years). So yeah, on the advice of most of the people on this thread, I see that I am definitely entitled to still come away. The extra money that she had paid has covered her half of the petrol. And I have still got my break.

I'm so glad you have gone there!!! Have a lovely time.

It doesn't matter if you go for a walk, or if it rains or if you just want to stay snuggled up the sofa. You've gone! Yay!!!

angelfacecuti75 · 11/04/2023 19:12

Yabu to be upset but at least you got the money out of her. If she didn't want to continue the friendship she may not have done this & life happens ....

AD1996 · 11/04/2023 19:14

I would definitely go (and keep the money)
