Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

This. A week in Italy is probably cheaper than a week in Cornwall

In a caravan?

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 07/04/2023 12:14

Tuesday is the only properly pissy day. The rest just looks showery.

Hoolihan · 07/04/2023 12:16

God I hate UK holidays. Unutterably depressing. How could you not want to go somewhere DIFFERENT? Hear different voices, eat new food, experience a different way of life, an unfamiliar culture. I don't want to eat shit provincial UK pub food and visit castles in the fucking drizzle.

PuppyMonkey · 07/04/2023 12:18

I’m one of those weirdos for whom the idea of going somewhere swelteringly hot abroad is ten times less appealing than going to Cornwall in the rain. And packed theme parks in Florida? Now I would need a lot of alcohol to get through that. Grin

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/04/2023 12:20

OK, not at all recently, but 2 places we took kids of around 9 and 11 when the weather was iffy during Easter holidays, were the Shire Horse Centre (lovely gentle giants*). and the Seal Sanctuary - largely for seal pups that ended up injured after storms, etc.

*Kids were fascinated to see one of them peeing - it looked like gallons! 😂

StarryGazeyEyes · 07/04/2023 12:20

Living in Cornwall, the weather pays absolutely no attention to the forecasts. It is hugely changeable, so I'd be optimistic it won't all be bad. I infinitely prefer a walk in the beach when it's elemental (and quiet), but obviously not all will agree. Surfing's just as good if not better in the rain - you're wet anyway. Another couple of suggestions to add to the list - Bodmin Jail and the Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway. Cardinham woods is great for walks and bikes, and has a lovely cafe.

justasking111 · 07/04/2023 12:23

@C1239 well Friday it's lashing down otherwise weather is pretty good. I used Looe because it's central. Who's your weather forecast go to.

@Hoolihan Erm, how about a little thing called money, for instance? Abroad is not an option for everyone unfortunately, for all sorts of reasons.

Have to agree

there is nothing like getting out of your country and experiencing another and its culture

Maireas · 07/04/2023 12:24

Ooh dear, bad weather on that French coast as well.

@OldFan

going abroad is often cheaper than a holiday in the UK, especially somewhere like Cornwall

Wouldyoubeworried · 07/04/2023 12:29

Book a surfing lesson. It won’t matter if it rains because you’ll be soaked anyway. There are some great places for beginner surfers in Cornwall. Where are you going?

Ewock · 07/04/2023 12:30

😂🤣 of course I forgot the UK is one culture only.
I would love to be able to afford to take my kids to wonderful places I've visited in the past, however this isn't possible. But I can assure you they have great holidays and fantastic memories. Learning about the history of a variety of places in the UK.
I think saying the UK is shit for holidays, as a pp did, is rather ignorant and generalizing.

ArticSaviour · 07/04/2023 12:31

We are here now. It is glorious today and so lots of people out. Off to Eden in a bit for the second time this week - we will have a wander outside and have tea and cake.

In my experience of around 25 Easters spent in Cornwall, it doesn't rain in the pub. The worst week of weather we ever had here was one August.

OP, if you say where you are staying then there will be lots of recommendations

Slitherie · 07/04/2023 08:42

No but hide and seek in the woods would be fun. Does Cornwall have woods? I’ve never been. Never fancied it personally, I always imagine it to to be busy and wolf fleece

If you've not been to Cornwall I really do think you're missing out. The scenery is stunning whether wet or dry, and there are so many things to see and do.

FranKatzenjammer · 07/04/2023 12:35

@RosesInWater I was referring to the board game Monogamy.

No Cornwall is great in the rain because there is lots to do even in the rain, and when you do get 10 mins of sun it's wonderful!! And the rain is never really constant - it blows over in a short time and then you get some sunshine. Good raincoat and wellies and the beach and the coastal path are easily accessed.

Not sure where you'll be, but when it rains we have:
Eden
Heligan
Maritime Museum in Falmouth
Shipwreck museum in Charleston
Model railway museum and tiny aquarium in Mevagissey
Wheal Coates museum in st austell
Royal Cornwall museum in truro (they have a mummy!!) - loads of lovely cafes and independent shops in Truro too
Telegraph museum at porthcurno
Trebah gardens
Lanhydrock
Enys Gardens
Laser quest in Penryn
Victorian village at Flambards and when the kids were little there was a play barn there too
Launceston town museum which is stuffed full of random things, it's wonderful
Levant Mine

And my absolute favourite for post-accident Chernobyl vibes, Geevor Tin Mine with even the coffee cups and work boots still left where they were the day the mine closed.

All fab suggestions that don't cost a fortune. Another one I'd highly recommend is Bodmin Jail - fascinating place and a wonderful tour. Kids loved it too.

AllOfThemWitches · 07/04/2023 12:38

I don't think I could get that negative about a holiday, regardless of the weather.

Oblomov23 · 07/04/2023 12:38

We never used to go caravanning at Easter because it was too cold, too rainy. But last year was glorious. Clearly not this year. Sad

FranKatzenjammer · 07/04/2023 12:35

@RosesInWater I was referring to the board game Monogamy.

OK, sorry I hadn't heard of that one! Had a look, and it looks perfect for your romantic trip to Wales. I think... 😂Enjoy.

MarshaBradyo · 07/04/2023 12:13

In a caravan?

No, Air B&B

DH and I had our honeymoon in Venice, stayed in a little apartment across the water from the main bit, short boat ride everyday, cost around £1500 altogether and that was with splashing out once we got there.

Hellybelly84 · 07/04/2023 12:41

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/04/2023 11:17

@Hellybelly84

the kids may not care - but op does!
and it’s her holiday too!

Totally get it, thats why we always go to the Med. I love guaranteed sunshine on holiday, but I think most people would be expecting rain at Easter in Cornwall. I just meant to reassure her that the kids would still enjoy it just as much (and hope she still enjoys abit of a break too).

mellicauli · 07/04/2023 12:44

Tenerife. That was unutterably depressing. Cornwall is a delight.

If you look at the forecast here https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2641589]
Sat & Sun OK, Monday looks OK in Parts, Tues OK in the morning but afternoon a washout, Weds & Thurs you should be able to find some non rainy places.

We're stuck at home. Wish we were in Cornwall in the rain.

Board games, treats, fish and chips on the seafront (nothing visible, car windows steamed up), wearing waterproofs and making the most of it...

Is there any entertainment where you're staying? Swimming pool or amusements type things?

You don't go to Cornwall in April for wall to wall sunshine, you'll enjoy yourselves anyway.

Board games? Boring. Can do at home.
Treats? elaborate?

Cornwall is a gamble anytime of the year OP. We go every year but nice weather is game changing. Depending on where in cornwall you go if it's raining you're only left with a million pub lunches and rainy cold walks.

Lulu1919 · 07/04/2023 12:46

Literally just walked in to my home after a week away self catering in a tiny cottage in UK
Forecast before we left was abysmal..but in the end it wasn't so bad...a few showers but not rain all day everyday as forecast,we even saw some sunshine !! ...so don't despair it might be better than you think ..pack wet weather clothes ,board games, etc etc
