I would never go outside in my pjs. Never in a million years. Unless there was a fire and I had to get out. Some women round here (it's never men) go out to the supermarket in their pjs. I never go out without having a shower and getting fully dressed. But each to their own.

Using ‘plaid’ as a synonym for ‘checked’ is an Americanism that has crept into our language. I cringe when my daughter uses it.

I think that either going out of a hotel in pjs or vaping at 0630 is really quite tacky and rough. Together it’s full Waynetta. I would not even go to a hotel reception in pjs other than in a true emergency. This is all pretty snobby judgement on my part and I am ok to admit that.

It isn't an Americanism.

It comes from a Gaelic word meaning wrap or blanket but has come to mean any material of that criss cross pattern. It can also mean a plaid in the sense of a blanket type accessory with a formal tartan outfit.

I'm 63 and live in Scotland - I would say "tartan" if the garment was obviously a formal tweed tartan garment or the multiple colours more often found in tartan. I would describe the type of shirt which Kurt Cobain wore as "plaid" (pronounced "played") not tartan.

Sorry I haven't read upthread and I am sure someone has already told you, but it's spelled "plaid" not "plad"

diddl · 07/04/2023 08:59

I think a lot of people might judge the vaping whatever you were wearing!

So might as well be comfortable & ready to go straight back to bed!

To go outside. 😳

Yes. It doesn't take a minute to get your clothes on.

It has been mentioned a few times strangely 👍

SnapBang · 07/04/2023 09:00

Yes I would judge to be honest. It doesn’t sound like you care though so carry on 😂

You just googled what plaid is. didn't you @NatashaDancing ?

Duckingella · 07/04/2023 09:00

I've stood outside a what would be considered a posh hotel in my pjs at 2am with my equally pj clad work friend who was having a cigarette.

I wasn't smoking as I don't smoke but was keeping her company

RoyGBivisacolorfulman · 07/04/2023 09:02

I would give you kudos for actually going outside. Many people don't.

But often pyjamas are plaid rather than Chequered

pjclown · 07/04/2023 09:02

Well, I never asked if I was classy to be honest 😆 but im not skanky, a chav or common as muck.

Anycolouryoulike · 07/04/2023 09:02

I'd probably join you. Nothing like an early morning vape in your PJs.

BignBootiful · 07/04/2023 09:03

MaltedCow · 07/04/2023 08:02

Ahhh the expected Mumsnet responses. Nope no judgment here, I'm not a smoker nor a vaper but it's 6am not 1pm. You were outside a few minutes not running around Tesco in your pyjamas and it's the Premier Inn not the flaming Mandarin Oriental.

How dare you imply that Premier Inn requires a slacker dress code than the Mandarin whatsit?

Yes, I wanted to check the history of the word. I've never thought of plaid (pronounced "played") as an Americanism.

Carry on not giving a shite, OP 😀

SoggyPigeon · 07/04/2023 09:04

I mean it’s not a classy look, is it? Vaping in your pyjamas outside a Premier Inn. I can see why he’s embarrassed and tbh I would be too if my husband did stuff like this. It would be a major turn off.

Agree with this. If I drove past I’d think that’s a hotel to avoid. But you’re an adult so it’s up to you.

I've never heard anyone pronounce plaid as played- always heard it said as "plad"

Is it really pronounced "played" or are you having us on? Will my friends think I'm doing a Hyacinth Bouquet if I start saying "played" instead of "plad"?
