To ask how long your deep clean takes ?

Imperialleathers · 06/04/2023 23:26

I have a small 2 bedroom flat and I deep clean probably about once a month, if that. It takes me about 4 hours. How big is your house and how long does a deep clean take ??

OP posts:
Isledelaray · 07/04/2023 09:22

I do.a big clean about once a month but I keep on top of everything pretty much daily anyway so it's never too bad. I do showerheads/plugs/unblock sinks/dishwasher rinse/washing machine rinse/descale kettle every couple of months.

A deep clean for me would be moving every piece of furniture and cleaning behind it/under it. I've not done this in the 2 years we've lived here! Only small furniture gets moved to clean not sofas and beds.

It's things like Instagram and TikTok that makes people think they should see cleaning as a hobby and have spotless show homes that are cleaned and tidied constantly.

It's bizarre.

I agree and they annoy me.
"Come clean sink with me we cleaned yesterday using and mixing 4 products which should not be mixed"😍

BelindaMelinda · 07/04/2023 09:25

I don't think I do deep clean.

I clean normally so it looks nice on the surface, hide crap in cupboards, drawers and kallax and then threaten the dc with their lives that they never crack open a cupboard or drawer in front of guests.

WhatFreshHeckle · 07/04/2023 09:27

I'm looking for a cleaner and they are suggesting four hours a week for my small house 🤣. Currently it probably gets that in bits and pieces over the week, but I rarely get round to doing things like washing the blinds or clearing out all the kitchen cupboards etc. This is why I'm looking for a cleaner! So they can do the basics and I can do the big stuff.

I get someone to come and clean out carpets (because they're cream - the previous owners' choice, not mine)! We also get someone to clean the oven every couple of months and avoid using it too much in the interim. If you can afford it, I really recommend outsourcing some of the big cleaning jobs as they do such a good job. I'm not that good at cleaning. We are not big spenders at all and are really frugal generally, but this is one area I'm happy to spend money in. An oven clean is about the same or less that one dinner out for two people without wine.

Years I suspect. Many years

‘Deep clean’ makes me feel the same as I do about ‘batch bake’ and ironing tea towels!

😂😂

piedbeauty · 07/04/2023 09:29

I've never cleaned the tops of our kitchen cupboards. 🙄😬

piedbeauty · 07/04/2023 09:31

Blimey @Poppins2016 - that is a deep clean!

Nor did any if the tenants in houses I lived in😂
It would be so much better to just do copboards all the way up as a standard!

Deep clean to me is wipe skirting boards, new bedsheets, clean out fridge, mop floors, wipe down all surfaces, hoover etc. Certainly not any dusting or anything like that.

Chasing Tom And Jerry GIF by HBO Max

How can you consider it a deep clean without dusting? Genuinely interested.

’Deep clean’ means to me doing everything.
EG:-

  • Dust all surfaces
  • Light fittings
  • Picture/mirror/photo/TV frames
  • Ornaments/lamps/bulbs
  • Skirting boards
  • Paintwork around doors and door handles
  • Walls/ceiling corners (if needed)
  • Hoover rugs/carpets and under furniture
  • Remove cushion seats off sofas/chairs and hoover underneath
  • Wet wash stone/wood floors
  • Polish/nourish wooden floors
  • Wipe down furniture
  • Wipe cupboards
Deep Clean means cleaning everything.

There is nothing smug on washing curtains once in a while. Especially if they are somewhere like kitchen or open plan. Or if you live on dusty road 😳 blimey that colour change is something then

The conversation around it is annoying.

I don’t care about the act of washing the curtains, it’s the idea of including it as part of a ‘deep clean’. Like I said in my post.

Lay sheets of newspapers and swap them out when needed. No dusting/cleaning required 😬

Whattt44 · 07/04/2023 09:38

I used to clean the house (not a'deep clean') every Saturday. I now clean as and when things look like they need cleaning. I wipe down the bathroom and kitchen most days , my house is no cleaner or dirtier than when I wasted half of a Saturday doing it.

Isn't that just a normal clean

My guilty pleasure is watching the gypsy clean with me, their homes are stunning and immaculate.

Never do one. The odd blitz on problem areas or high use areas like bathroom/kitchen.

Ragwort · 07/04/2023 10:06

I did empty and clean out my kitchen cupboards during lockdown when I was really looking for things to do ... not bothered since Grin.

I just do a couple of small tasks a day .. sort of TOMM but no DC or pets at home - only a retired DH who is quite useful - so that must make a difference.

I’m reading this and absorbing every detail.

I am a dreadful slattern, but for some reason, despite being mid fifties, I am determined to clean my house properly, and have taken a week off work to achieve this.

I have a bedroom, bathroom, tiny office, kitchen, and lounge. Plus stairs. I will require plentiful breaks for tea, hot cross buns, and self congratulation.

Do you think a week is enough? I have lived here six years and never cleaned the inside of the windows, cleaned oven once. Just to give you a flavour of my depravity.

@Jagoda definitely achievable in a week but you do need to be committed and treat it like a day's work.

Personally I would do it room by room each day rather than flitting around - I would start with the lounge so when you sit in it that evening you can enjoy your progress.

I'd do the hardest rooms of the kitchen and bathroom in the middle of the week and end with something easier like the study and stairs.

I like listening to audiobooks or podcasts when I do the housework, it keeps me at it for longer.

The one thing I would outsource if you can afford to though is getting the oven cleaned - if that's not been done regularly it'll be hard work and take up a lot of time.

ariaknox · 07/04/2023 11:11

@Sleepinatent
I have a strategy

Start off with bedroom once we've all woken up,
Strip the sheets
Wipe window and ledge
Dust pictures/tv bedside tops
Quick organise bedside drawers
Make bed
Wipe skirting and door
Then close that door and lock them out of the room
Then breakfast
Back upstairs after breakfast and Move to my sons room
Do the same in his room
Lock the door
Move into the dressing room (box room) dust and quick sort wardrobe and dressing take I keep these both pretty clean and organised so doesn't take long then lock that room
Off
bathroom
Clean cupboard/wipe window
Clean toilet bath and shower
Close that door off
Polish pictures in upstairs hallway then head downstairs clean the small porch by the door organise shoes and jackets
Then move the kids into the living room
By this time my 1 year old is ready for lunch and a nap so I'll have a break feed and put my 1 year old down and put the tv on my my 3 year old and usually give him lunch
While he's eating and she's napping I go back up
Clean the bathroom floor Hoover all the rooms and stairs and clean the porch floor
1 year old wakes up from nap so sit with her and 3 year old for a while
Start on the living room
Empty toys and organise them
Wipe leather sofas
Polish and dust
Clean window
Hoover
Kids love when I empty the toy box
Usually by then my husbands home from work so he'll sit and play with the kids while I do the kitchen
In and out the cupboards
Cooker/oven
Floors
Fridge
Conservatory will have a little tidy but it stays clean mostly because we don't use it much
Then it's done

I've always made my home a priority especially with small kids who lick and eat everything from every crevice
My children grew up with me cleaning and they enjoy it too
And help whenever they can
My 3 year old loves loading the washing machine and he loves polishing anything if you give him a cloth and bottle
He cleans up after himself
Tidies his toys before bed time
If he spills a drink or drops food he will get a tissue and clean up after himself
And my 1 year old has started using tissues or clothes to wipe things which is cute

They are happy to entertain themselves in between my jobs but don't get me wrong a lot of it is done 1 handed
I've learnt what they like so emptying drawers is fun for them
I usually have music on and they love dancing or playing together while I'm busy
Bit shocked that some people don't believe kids play or entertain themselves though out the day they're very active and curious children and I always include them in my normal lives cooking and cleaning and work it's just how our household runs

Jagoda · 07/04/2023 11:51

Thanks @jaqueandjill . I have made a list, as obviously there’s no point in doing anything without the gratification of crossing it off the list. Also been to Tesco for additional cleaning supplies.

@ariaknox You do all that every day? 😱😱😱

Are you me lol. I am very much surface cleaner and like what you can see tidy. Cupboards a mess. This thread has made me feel a bit guilty that I have a few days off over bank hols and shld do a,spring clean. But once I spent 2 hours later doing a normal clean I know I won't. I do keep.on top of things each day on days when wfh.

oddwellingtonboots · 07/04/2023 11:59

I grew up with mum spending her whole Saturday doing this and most of Sunday ironing. She never seemed to have any hobbies or passions. Our home was immaculate but souless.

I absolutely will never be this person - I will be roaming thru forests, swimming in the sea and climbing up mountains.

The house is just as it is.

Disneyblueeyes · 07/04/2023 12:01

Too long, so I employ a cleaner to do it.

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 07/04/2023 12:09

Whattt44 · 07/04/2023 00:26

To me, a deep clean means , top of kitchen cupboards, inside all cupboards, moving wardrobes , beds and chests of drawers , pulling out the fridge to clean behind it and taking out shelves to wash ,cleaning the oven , cleaning all grouting, hoovering , dusting all surfaces and curtain poles , cleaning windows , cleaning the bathroom.
It would take more than a few hours that's for sure.

Seriously?!
Never in my case, just like I have never ‘Spring cleaned’ either!

I do most of what it entails at some point in time when it’s necessary but never as a planned attack 😊
