To ask how long your deep clean takes ?

Imperialleathers · 06/04/2023 23:26

I have a small 2 bedroom flat and I deep clean probably about once a month, if that. It takes me about 4 hours. How big is your house and how long does a deep clean take ??

OP posts:

I reckon over the course of the past decade I've achieved one single deep clean of the house. It is done in very tiny increments (eg one cupboard emptied, cleaned and sorted every few months; a skirting board might be wiped somewhere once a year or so; I cleaned behind the washing machine last summer due to a leak, the bookshelves are dusted but dust is removed a bit when we remove books now and then to give away). There is no plan for this it is just done in sporadic small bursts.

Top level light cleaning happens most regularly- loos, sinks, hoover, kitchen sides etc according to when it looks like it needs it.

Other mid range stuff like bed sheet changing every fortnight or so.

KateTheOccasionallyLate · 07/04/2023 00:12

*bookshelves aren't dusted

watcherintherye · 07/04/2023 00:21

‘Deep clean’ makes me feel the same as I do about ‘batch bake’ and ironing tea towels!

Blanketpolicy · 07/04/2023 00:26

We haven't done a deep clean since we moved into this house 20 years ago, I would guess maybe 2 days 4-5 hours a day-ish, but life is too short for that!

Whattt44 · 07/04/2023 00:26

To me, a deep clean means , top of kitchen cupboards, inside all cupboards, moving wardrobes , beds and chests of drawers , pulling out the fridge to clean behind it and taking out shelves to wash ,cleaning the oven , cleaning all grouting, hoovering , dusting all surfaces and curtain poles , cleaning windows , cleaning the bathroom.
It would take more than a few hours that's for sure.

@Binfluencer
I'm self employed (own a business)
So on a normal day I work from early morning into all hours of the night
A lot of the time my children are at work with me
So I always make sure I have a full day off to sort my house out and allow my children a lazy day So they play while I do my jobs
My cleaning day is always takeaway night so no washing up or cooking
I do other things like food shop or errands during the week in between work

I'm sorry but no 1 year olds and 3 year olds 'play while I do jobs'

That's not a thing. And that's ok. But never in the history of humankind has this happened for MULTIPLE HOURS STRAIGHT

Nevermind31 · 07/04/2023 00:28

The cleaner does 4 hours a week. It looks and feels clean, I suspect she’s got some sort of rota going for skirting boards etc and just keeps on top? This doesn’t include inside kitchen cabinets though, or changing bed sheets…

StrawberryWater · 07/04/2023 00:34

To me a deep clean is things you can’t generally see so top of cupboards and door frames as well as inside fridge and cupboards, also that awkward spot under the toilet outflow pipe etc etc. It would take about 3 hours (3 bedrooms over 3 floors plus 2 receptions and a kitchen plus bathrooms etc).

I clean things like shelves and skirting whenever I Hoover. Takes like 10 seconds to do a sweep over each one.

jaqueandjill · 07/04/2023 00:47

When we left our rented flat I was determined to get our deposit back and so cleaned literally every inch of it.
It was a 3 bed, 2 bath and it was empty so obviously easier - still took me several days!

I couldn't possibly deep clean a house in 4 hours. That amount of time would definitely be long enough to have it superficially looking good, but I wouldn't have done anything like move furniture to hoover behind, cleaned the oven, top of kitchen cupboards, window frames etc

Ishouldgodostuff · 07/04/2023 00:55

A deep clean here only seems to happen if we have someone coming to stay (So not very often then 😂) but for me its pulling the furniture out & vacuuming behind; windows cleaned all round; and the beds too pulled out & dusty floors/walls cleaned. Linen all changed, fridge cleaned out too. Last month I was even cleaning fly spots from the ceiling & washing all the skirting boards.
Needless to say Im hoping that this giant clean will last for ages & I dont need to pull out the vacuum cleaner again for a while.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 07/04/2023 01:00

"top of kitchen cupboards", "dusting skirting boards"... I didn't know those were things that should be on my to do list. I don't even make the bed on a morning...This is clearly not the right thread for me.

Mañanarama · 07/04/2023 01:06

Someone who lives near me has a crime scene clean up company, so I’ll wait.

Hi friend!

Mañanarama · 07/04/2023 01:08

I know someone who cleans behind her washer and dryer weekly, and pulls the fridge out monthly. My fridge isn’t moving anywhere until it dies.

HeadacheEarthquake · 07/04/2023 01:08

My and my mate do my 3 bed semi over a weekend (Fri eve- Sun eve) including cupboards, chuckout, carpet and skirting, windows, unser things, behind furniture, curtains etc

We then get much wine and a big meal.

Rinse and repeat her 1 bed but quite spacious flat the next weekend and the tip trip from both. Followed by of course much wine and a big meal.

CallieQ · 07/04/2023 01:08

Life is too short for deep cleaning

Whattt44 · 07/04/2023 01:09

I think people have varying ideas as to what a deep clean is.

ariaknox · 07/04/2023 01:11

@Binfluencer
Haha
Like I said it takes me a full day
If the kids weren't with me it would be quicker
I have a tv in my room so music on which they love
Toys in my sons room
And I have clean sponges and cloths so they entertain themselves
We have breaks in between for naps/breakfast/lunch
Plus they love when I empty a draw or cupboard so they sit and go though all my things
It's not easy never said it was but I've been doing this all their lives so they're used to it

IHateLegDay · 07/04/2023 01:15

I do a general clean every day for about 1-2 hours a day. I do extras throughout the week but never do it all it one go.
We live in a large house so it'd take days 😂

SirenSays · 07/04/2023 01:17

I don't think I've ever finished one

Deep clean to me is wipe skirting boards, new bedsheets, clean out fridge, mop floors, wipe down all surfaces, hoover etc. Certainly not any dusting or anything like that.

Come on OP, you can't just leave that hanging! How can you certainly not be dusting "or anything like that" when you are wiping down all the surfaces and skirtings? What is the set of dusting-like behaviours that is separate to wiping down surfaces? And what sort of deep clean specifically excludes dusting and things like it? I'm mystified.

I do a quick wipe down weekly but very rarely get to things like vacuuming under the sofa and cleaning out kitchen cupboards.

This isn't a deep clean to me. This is a normal weekly clean to me minus the skirting boards. I normally do a deep clean over a few days every 3 months or so. It entails windows, blinds, skirting boards, cleaning behind furniture, inside of kitchen cupboards etc.

Poppins2016 · 07/04/2023 02:40

OK. I'm going to go full MN here but this is what I'd call a deep clean, room by room:

Remove cobwebs
Dust shelving and all surfaces
Clean windows and frames
Wipe walls where necessary
Dust and wipe skirting boards
Vacuum, including under furniture (pulling out where necessary)
Mop floor (and scrub into corners/spot clean stains)
Spot clean carpets

If a bedroom:
As above, plus: make bed

If a bathroom:
As above, plus:
Use timescale remover on interior of sink/loo/shower/bath and tiling, then rinse as necessary
Wipe down exterior of sink, shower, bath and loo (paying particular attention to behind the loo and sink pedestal)
Use glass cleaner on mirrors and exterior of shower

If kitchen:
As above, plus:
Wipe top of kitchen cabinets
Empty cupboards/drawers and wipe clean
Clean out fridge, defrost freezer, wipe clean
Clean sink with timescale remover
Clean hob
Clean oven (including shelves, grill and door)

And now that I've described what a deep clean is to me, I'll go on to say that I have two very small children and that I have never deep cleaned my current house from top to bottom in one go (or even in one weekend)! I fire fight and focus on specific areas as and when necessary and try to stay on top of the basic tidying and 'maintenance cleaning'.
