to point out that one Y chromosome does not make you a male

Nimbostratus100 · 06/04/2023 09:53

In response to other posts insisting that one genetic test and one Y chromosome makes an athlete indisputably male with no room for error, I just want to point out that it not true.

There is always genetic exchange, for example, between a mother and baby, so anyone who has had a son will still have Y chromosomes in some cells in their body, and that will possibly show up in a genetic screening.

I am all for keeping men out of women's sport, and defining them genetically, but please lets not go over the top - one test does not prove you are male

Actually - you don't even have to have sex!! Surely it occurs when you've kissed a boy.

Merrymouse · 06/04/2023 12:07

Within the first 5 posts it became clear that posters on Mumsnet are aware of microchimerism, but the OP ploughed on.

Furries · 06/04/2023 12:08

What a load of pointless bollocks.

And I very much doubt your constant referencing of “our cause”.

Sorry if you find that hostile.

lifeissweet · 06/04/2023 12:08

I'm concerned that some people might think that having a few stray chin hairs means someone is really a man and should be driven out of sport by mean, angry women with tampon cannons.

So, as a public service announcement, I'm telling you horrible GC man-haters, that some women get stray chin hairs (or even a lovely healthy crop - and that one that suddenly appears from nowhere at 6 inches long when she was sure she plucked them all) and that doesn't make them men.

So calm down, ladies.

I'm an 'endocrinologist'

Mochudubh · 06/04/2023 12:09

Not finding this thread any less bonkers but to answer your AIBU.

You are BU to think we don't understand science.
You are BU to think your point is relevant (decisions aren't made on the basis of a single test showing one anomalous result).

You are NBU to post in AIBU rather than the naughty section as it brings more attention to the discussion.

Thank you.

MarshaBradyo · 06/04/2023 12:09

This is a bonkers thread

Op I can’t say you’re coming across as a “geneticist”

TheShellBeach · 06/04/2023 12:10

Nimbostratus100 · 06/04/2023 10:24

whats your point?

Forensic scientists may be working with a few cells on a door handle - dont you understand that?

But you were trying to make a point about sports, OP. Not about criminal investigations, where there may be only a tiny amount of material available to test.

This is going to go well.

This just makes woman who are defending womans rights look aggressive, and stupid

You're a geneticist, you say?

OP identifies as one….

SNWannabe · 06/04/2023 10:19

Ummm, if you've carried and birthed a baby boy...I would say that has cleared up any question of "are you male or female?" anyway...surely? I am not a geneticist though.

Rofling

SmartHome · 06/04/2023 12:03

The actual disturbing thing about this issue, which we're all skirting round, is that for us non-elite female athletes, there may still be the odd Y chromosome floating around from the sperm of that weird boy from Freshers Week, or any other horror you've ever shagged 😷

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It doesn't bare thinking about 🧐

/close thread. Baffled as to how this thread has made it to 200 posts after this.

This is part of the problem, very simplified patterns taught at GCSE level, which is fine, as it give a good foundation to build on, but does not always represent the full reality, and people who don't take a subject any further are stuck with the GCSE over simplifications in their head for life- genetics isn't the only topic that this can be an issue in

I agree, it seems to be an issue with statistics too.

Justnot · 06/04/2023 12:17

PP’s aren’t hostile and aggressive, OP should know if you start a thread, it’s there to be scrutinised - the whole gotcha, I know better than everyone rightly invites ridicule.

BMW6 · 06/04/2023 12:18

So all us women who have ever snogged a bloke / had sex with / gave birth to a boy are infested with Y chromosomes and are therefore really men and therefore homosexual?

But still capable (mostly) of getting pregnant and giving birth, even though we are genetically male?

Is that what's happened to your friend OP. Poor bloke.

Onegingerhead · 06/04/2023 12:21

And if I have a son and a male cat, will I test as a tomcat?

molecular biologist here

TheShellBeach · 06/04/2023 12:21

The only person being aggressive on this thread is you, OP.

lifeissweet · 06/04/2023 12:21

I've had 4 sons. Still waiting for the genetic advantage for sports.

Me too! And I can barely walk around the block without getting puffed out! What a damn rip-off.

GrabbyGabby · 06/04/2023 12:21

Personally i think any athlete with 'Y' in their name should be excluded from female competition. Just to be safe.

SmartHome · 06/04/2023 12:22

Tampon cannons 😆😆

But for the next generation it would have to be 'moon cup grenades' or 'period pant flingers' 🙊

Ah this thread should go in classics, hilair

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 06/04/2023 12:23

Good thread Op, making me laugh a lot today..............................

Foodie6 · 06/04/2023 12:23

Thank you OP for educating me on microchimerism because I for one had no idea that was a thing (I'm sure a lot of people here had no clue either).

No idea why everyone is mocking you. Well I do this is Mumsnet afterall. If an elite female athlete went through genetic testing and Daily Fail released a vague article saying they need to go for further testing with no other details, this forum would be the first place that a thread would appear insisting they need to be ousted from the sport immediately.

Shortpoet · 06/04/2023 12:23

I’m just waiting for all the dick-swinging sports cheats and vocal male fantastists to start claiming their Y- chromosomes are due to microchimerism and not the usual XY pattern.

In fact I might start a book on which one will be first!
