DH gave our two year old chilli coated peanuts whilst I was at work

I wouldn’t dream of giving her a whole peanut. I asked him why, and he said he was sat with her and she was chewing properly. Aibu to think that’s really risky regardless?

This. I knew I child who choked to death: well supervised at the time, several first aid trained people in room and a nurse there within 3mins. Still none of them where able to stop it happening or remove it.

Lots of proficient first aiders on here, so obviously the risks are lower for them. 🤷‍♀️

Well it seems on this thread that supervised death is somehow better.

Silentmama · 05/04/2023 20:12

NHS say no nuts till 5 - unless they are chopped or crushed - I think they can block the lungs.

BUT - to be fair I did not know this until your thread prompted me to google .

Just warn him it's NHS advice.

Mummyboy1 · 05/04/2023 20:13

You're right to be worried about choking. Officially nuts should be chopped for under 5's as they're a high choking risk.

Zwellers · 05/04/2023 20:15

Cuwins so because one child sadly choked on a nut no child should ever eat nuts? Let's puree all thier food. Best never take them anywere either, something might happen.

RausageSoul · 05/04/2023 20:18

It's marshmallows that I'm terrified of. They swell up and create a plug. Hate seeing 'baby chinos' being given out in Costa!

Dahliass · 05/04/2023 20:21

If you are that worried go on a first aid course with your DH.

Erm, no. Just don't give whole nuts to a toddler or a baby. 🤷‍♀️

That's not what I said at all. And for reference it wasn't a nut.
What I was saying is those saying it's ok because they are supervised etc are assuming that removes the risk which is rubbish.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/04/2023 20:26

It's just a risk assessment, if you can manage that risk, fine.

kidsandpuppies · 05/04/2023 20:27

I don't give my 5 year old whole peanuts. I saw a picture of a peanut caught in a child trachea and it horrified me. I think peanuts are up there with grapes.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/04/2023 20:28

And boiled sweets.

Aren't people aware you're not supposed to give a child whole nuts until age 5? I thought everyone knew this. They're one of the most choking hazardy things there is.

Same here, I was quite shocked by the first few responses!
I thought it was common knowledge that you don't give young children nuts? Especially peanuts as they are a choking hazard.
OP is right to be alarmed.

If OP had posted she was the one to give the nuts, everyone would be frothing over how dangerous it was

Clearly not everyone, considering how split the responses are, with lots of honesty about different parenting choices.

Antiquiteas · 05/04/2023 20:41

My two year old absolutely loves them. I have to hide them if I ever have any, he’d eat the lot. Loves a bar snack.

Bivarb · 05/04/2023 17:03

I get you OP. People can be surprisingly naive when it comes to small children and choking. It can happen even under the supervision of an adult and sat down. Why take the risk when all your husband has to do is crush the peanuts in half or quarters.

It's great that your child enjoyed the strong flavour though. Very adventurous!

Its not naive. Peanuts are small, they aren't really a choking hazard. Lots of things are riskier that you would be fine with giving to a child,

On a peanut?

StaunchMomma · 05/04/2023 20:44

Peanuts are tiny. A bite of sandwich is way bigger!

Christ, I never knew this!!

No idea why the NHS bother putting it on their website. Just for lols.

Not on a peanut though.

IvyIvyIvy · 05/04/2023 20:48

Also a bit confused how both a grape and a peanut are the exact size to lodge in the throat. If you put them next to each other there is a huge difference in size. Isn't a a broad bean or pea about the same size as a peanut?

Lily234 · 05/04/2023 20:48

We wouldn’t give them under five either, OP. I don’t believe that children need to be given these foods earlier to teach them how to eat them. The last person who told me that, told me a week later that her son had a choking incident. He was okay thankfully, but I really don’t see any value in giving particular choking hazards early.

We do supervise with all foods and try to use general safe eating habits since anyone can choke on anything at any age.

Cuwins · 05/04/2023 20:52

@Tomkirkman
@IamKlaus
No not on a nut. My point wasn't actually directly about the nut but about the fact people were suggesting that them being sat supervising their child removed the risk of choking- nut or other food supervising does not remove the risk, it may allow you to act quickly yes but even acting quickly won't necessarily help.
