DH gave our two year old chilli coated peanuts whilst I was at work

I wouldn’t dream of giving her a whole peanut. I asked him why, and he said he was sat with her and she was chewing properly. Aibu to think that’s really risky regardless?

I am not sure I really go with the advice peanuts are hazards.

Most food ‘could be’ a choking Hazard. Kids should be eating food of different taste and texture.

I also think, since he is a her parent he can also make a risk assessment himself.

If you think he can’t be trusted there’s bigger problems.

I agree with this.

Oakyloaky · 05/04/2023 17:14

I personally would never give a young child a peanut or grape .Granddchild will not be having mini eggs either !

Viviennemary · 05/04/2023 17:15

Of course she shpuld not have them at 2. They are a choking hazard.

Grapes are normally okay if you cut them.

jays · 05/04/2023 17:17

Directly from the NHS site …“Whole nuts and peanuts should not be given to children under 5 years old, as they can choke on them.
You can give your baby nuts and peanuts from around 6 months old, as long as they're crushed, ground or a smooth nut or peanut butter.”

Hercisback · 05/04/2023 17:23

I have two kids and had no idea about those nut rules.....oops.
Well I'm not changing now, they both love nuts.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 05/04/2023 17:23

A few people have mentioned grapes but they’re much larger than peanuts. I wouldn’t have thought they’d be an issue but according to nhs you’ve not to do it.

PortmeirionTiles · 05/04/2023 17:24

Peanuts are known to be a serious choking hazard to small children. I’m surprised that more people don’t know this. They’re exactly the right size and shape to get stuck if they go down the wrong way. Look up some links for him OP. Be warned, some are quite distressing.

Hercisback · 05/04/2023 17:26

The NHS has very strict rules about a lot of things that aren't always based on evidence, more based on them expecting all humans to be really stupid.

CornishTiger · 05/04/2023 17:27

Also the chilli element brings in additional choking risk. If it was too strong a taste she might be busy dealing with that rather than focusing on chewing.

Chickpea17 · 05/04/2023 17:28

peanuts are too small to be a choking hazard?

LadyOfACertainAge · 05/04/2023 17:28

Peanuts are nowhere near the level of risk of choking as grapes. Peanuts are much smaller and are solid, meaning it is easier to dislodge if it does get stuck. Eating whilst under sitting and under supervision of a parent is fine.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/04/2023 17:31

Most of the 2 year olds I know eat peanuts (plain, roasted, salted, wasabi, beer nuts...). They are too small to choke on, even if they didn't crunch them up. Which they do.

And all the people fainting in horror at the thought, are you giving your two year olds raw carrot sticks? Which are bitten into chunks much larger than a peanut?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 05/04/2023 17:34

I still cut up my 6 year olds grapes and maltesers.

Mini eggs are crushed (usually used as a topping for something).

Peanuts are a no-no.

I don't care if people think I'm irrational. DH knows my feelings on this.

I'm with you OP

What peanuts are the size of a grape or mini egg?

I am buying the wrong peanuts!

Xrays · 05/04/2023 17:35

People are too laid back about choking hazards. Peanuts are right up there with grapes. I wouldn’t be happy at all.

thegrain · 05/04/2023 17:36

Warn him about hotdogs too

Bivarb · 05/04/2023 17:03

I get you OP. People can be surprisingly naive when it comes to small children and choking. It can happen even under the supervision of an adult and sat down. Why take the risk when all your husband has to do is crush the peanuts in half or quarters.

It's great that your child enjoyed the strong flavour though. Very adventurous!

I agree.

its not a lack of supervision that causes choking, it’s either inappropriate food or food served inappropriately (or bad luck, admittedly). Obviously if an adult is present they can administer first aid but the goal should be to avoid an incident. Nuts are high risk.

I agree "choking hazard" doesn't mean if you eat this you will choke but there's sufficient cause for concern for it to be a known choking hazard.

Brexiteermorons · 05/04/2023 17:51

I don’t see the problem. If your concern is choking, then that can happen with anything.

Notegoat · 05/04/2023 17:59

No whole nuts for children under 5. It’s basic safety. I’m worried that so many people on here don’t seem to understand this.

Notegoat · 05/04/2023 18:02

What is the diameter of a 2 year old's trachea?
The size of a young child's trachea (windpipe) or breathing tube is approximately the size of a drinking straw in diameter.

A peanut can easily block the windpipe.

Namechange828492 · 05/04/2023 18:03

I always thought peanuts were too small to choke on and "documented episodes of choking" were in fact allergic reations. And I too am a fastidious grape cutter

Wishawisha · 05/04/2023 18:05

whatisupwiththis · 05/04/2023 16:58

Aren't people aware you're not supposed to give a child whole nuts until age 5? I thought everyone knew this. They're one of the most choking hazardy things there is.

Isn’t that grapes and cherry tomatoes?

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 05/04/2023 18:07

I wouldn't do it but that is purely down to my own anxieties
