'Queen' Camilla

Replitad · 04/04/2023 23:12

I wouldn't have called myself a republican before now but I think the 'Queen' Camilla thing has tipped me over the edge.

Pretty audacious considering their history and I think a lot of the public won't agree. I certainly won't be celebrating or even watching coronation.

Imagine living in a society where we actually have a say, and we can vote people into positions of power.

This has tickled me.

Not sure what decade you’re living in, but we do live in that society in 2023

I have a feeling something is going to happen at his coronation. There will be a protest or something

If it is like the jubilee most of the crowds will be tourists

I can only find the queen Elizabeth saying she wished for Camilla to be known as queen consort. Never queen. This was only said iwhildy unwell in the months before her death after years of the wish being princess consort. Never literally said she wants her to be queen once

At the relevant time she was appearing in public, and seeing her Prime Minister every week. It's grossly offensive of you to imply that she didn't know exactly what she was doing. Not least because what she was doing was 100% logical, sensible and generally supported throughout the country.

massivenamechnage · 05/04/2023 00:41

Prince albert was consort

‘King’ is considered a higher rank than ‘Queen’ so a king consort would assume a higher position, when it’s not. Which is why Prince Philip was never styled as King.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 05/04/2023 00:42

We do have the vote 😂

A constitutional monarchy isn’t voted for because they aren’t like politicians. It’s a birthright. One that has not, for a very very long time, come with any sort of rule or power.

We don't have any vote on the royal family.

I'm pointing out the craziness of having people in power in the country (the royal family) who just decide themselves that they are better than anyone else.

The royal family says they are better than everyone else. And the public goes along with it, and agrees that the royal family are better than everyone else.

It's such a crazy system. It's archaic

It would sound strange if Prince Albert was called King Consort or just King Albert. Wonder why it's different for men and women.

That was my only thought really. I genuinely couldn't give a fig what she's called. It has no impact on my life at all.

This was why Philip was Prince Philip and not King Philip because a King would outrank a Queen. So it’s ok to have a Queen Consort not a King Consort. That’s what I understood anyway.

Besides Camilla and Charles have been married for almost 20 years now. Some people just have to let the past go. What they both did wasn’t right but that was decades ago when phone hacking was such a normal thing for tabloids to do.

But I remember even back then thinking, how was this even allowed to be recorded and shared? Even though I never really understood what was being said as a child, I knew that it was a private conversation between two people being shared in a public sphere and that to me felt wrong and intrusive.

She was always going to be Queen Consort as is tradition and she would have been referred to as “Queen” when Charles became the King so there hasn’t been a betrayal of any sorts, just the following of traditional protocol.

Security is going to be extremely high and present everywhere.

There has been no protests at a Jubilee AFAIK.

It will probably just be a nice day.

Gymnopedie · 05/04/2023 00:46

He had several affairs and has another child in the US.

I know you've amended that to say Australia, but US/Australia - where is the evidence? Not just rumours in the tabloids.

The status of the wife of a King is Queen Consort. Her title is Queen. They are two different things.

PPs have pointed out previous consorts. Queen Elizabeth's parents were titled King George and Queen Elizabeth. When King George died, her mother became Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Not Queen Consort Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

The wool has been pulled over our eyes again. We were told Camilla would be Princess Consort and not Queen.

We were told 18 years ago that that was the intention. Intentions change, perfectly legitimately.

CremeEggQueen · 05/04/2023 00:47

I've voted YANBU even though I probably will end up watching some of it, history and all that innit.
Voted YANBU as I'm old, definitely don't see her as Queen.
Nope. A lot of people I know in RL feel the same.

Wow. The blindness. It's in front of your face yet you still can't see it.

The royal family are in a position of supreme power in the UK. They have not been voted into those positions of power by anyone, have they?

Why would we have a vote on the Royal Family? They have no ruling power. They can’t even vote themselves! It would be pointless. They’re essentially a glorified PR tool. What ‘power’ did you think they had? And when have they ever said they’re better than everyone else?

We DO have a voting system whereby we can vote in people on power. Having a RF doesn’t mean we aren’t a democracy

We live in constitutional monarchy so they’re integrated into our legal system one way or another. But people need to be able to separate the constitutional role of the royal family and the actual royal family. There is still a need for softer diplomacy and I feel like a more streamlined and slimmed down monarchy can deliver that.

LOL at a PP saying they have a child in Australia. A child who was born before they even met. Born when Camilla was 18. Riddle me that.

What is this ‘supreme power’? What laws do they make?

Actually I’m going to bed I CBA arguing with thickos who have absolutely no idea what they’re going on about

DappledThings · 05/04/2023 00:50

The royal family are in a position of supreme power in the UK.
What power do they actually have? They have a lot of money, and properties and a huge number of ceremonial roles. That's not power. I'm sure the weekly monarch/PM chats and very interesting but I doubt they influence policy much.

Charles III had banged on for years about a slimmed down monarchy and he has already made some significant changes. I think there will be more to come after his coronation.

CremeEggQueen · 05/04/2023 00:53

None of us have any idea whatsoever what it was like for Charles to have to marry someone that was so young and whom he had very little interest in or anything in common with. He would have undoubtedly married Camilla instead and still been so happily married to her now but it wasn’t allowed.
Should have had a backbone and stood up for himself then. Not dragged an innocent 19 year old into his nonsense

No , we are landed with queen Camilla.

And we have no vote. We have No say in it. It sickens me a bit. How is that possible in 2023

Just as well that Queen Camilla isn't in a position of power, then, isn't it?

Why have a royal family at all? What do we get out of it?

It's ridiculous.

One family gets privileges and multiple palaces.

For what? I think we will look back in years to come, and think if how stupid we were.

A lot of countries got rid of their royal families , centuries ago.

DahliaMacNamara · 05/04/2023 00:54

Don't want a monarchy and don't consider myself anyone's subject. But it seems daft to me that those who do want a monarchy think they should be able to overturn centuries of protocol because they don't want the King's lawfully married wife to be Queen. They've got so used to HM Queen Elizabeth, they think the next Queen will get to 'rule over us'. No. Not her job.

And a lot of countries still have monarchies. 26 countries to be precise.

It’s a good question and one that’s always relevant. I’m not sure I CBA explaining it though to someone who thinks constitutional monarchies have ‘supreme power’

It's being changed from Queen Consort to just 'Queen' after it's been in the news today. Supposedly this is against Queen Elizabeth 's wishes

Yes I heard the same and am surprised.

The
past is the past and the couple do seem happy, however there is no doubt Camilla was predatory, scheming and I think her being the Queen is a bit much.

However there's nowt anyone can do, it's not our business. They are both in their mid seventies, won't last forever, then we'll have King and Queen William and Catherine. I say 'we', I won't be around then.

QEII literally gave her blessing for this to happen a year ago
