To be annoyed about Wet Wipes ban

I have never put them down the toilet, but because too many stupid people do, I will no longer be able to clean my bum hole properly!
And don't have a large bathroom so there's no space for a bidet, before anyone suggests it.

I was wondering how we managed when it was cut up newspaper on a string in the lav at the bottom of the yard never mind modern toilet paper. Of all the things that are important to me I don't think wet wipes make the top 100.

To be fair there were fewer people back then who needed year-long care. I can see it being an issue for care hones, hospitals, etc.

xogossipgirlxo · 04/04/2023 11:43

But these are plans for now, aren't they? No decision has been made yet.

Myneighbourskia · 04/04/2023 11:44

As long as you shower every day, surely nothing wrong with just toilet paper. And before anyone goes on at me about the shower, we use solar panels.

Oh, shower habits are another can of worms on MN!😁

Bloody HELL. “Yeah I know they’re bad but I’m still going to use them.” “I know what you’re saying but I have no choice.” Just waiting for “WOKE” accusations now. Good luck with that net zero thing if this is how you react to one tiny little measure to reduce plastic pollution.

Kendodd · 04/04/2023 11:49

Don't worry OP. The government has announced this ban before, then unbanned them, then rebanned them. If they do ban them (hope so) manufacturers will very quickly develop biodegradable wipes would be my predictions.

Am I the only person left who just wipes their bum with toilet paper? 😳

Put some shit on your arm then wipe it off with loo roll and see if you feel clean.
Or your armpit if you've got a hairy arse. 😁
Loo roll alone just doesn't feel clean. Dry wiping shit off your arse is only half a job imo.

Well I don't suppose care homes had a lav at the end of the yard even then so a bit different. They had good old Izal, worse than newspaper as far as I remember.

Quveas · 04/04/2023 11:49

Oddly, not only are they not banning wipes, but the world has survived for eons without needing them in the first place - with or without plastic! Dear God, this goes beyond "first world problems" and enters the stratosphere as something to not care about.

woodhill · 04/04/2023 11:50

If you don't need to use them then try not to.

I understand about the disabled adults issue

The world also survived without smartphones and yet here you are using one.

I'm really pleased they've been banned. It's about time. People managed before they were even a thing.

Also, what's wrong with toilet paper for wiping your bum?

Hardly, ‘it didn’t always exist’ is the most ridiculous thing to not use something!

I’m all for ever wipe becoming plastic free, every wipe on the market regulated so it’s biodegradable and not marketed as flushable but carrying around a tupperware of water to clean a shitty nappy is completely out of touch with contemporary lifestyles.
’we don’t need them because we didn’t always have them’ is just idiotic. If people didn’t need them it wouldn’t be such a big market.

Cloth wipes are really good for cleaning bums. Try them.

Without being gross, not always...

Blimey this is an eye opening thread.

For all of those worried about bum guns - they work very well, when you do your post gun pat to dry off the toilet paper is clean, just damp with water. They can be quite high pressure, so you need to work out how much to press the lever down (preferably not whilst pointing the gun at your arse)!

No I don’t have one at home, but having used them plenty abroad, you do start to wonder why we don’t have them more in the UK.

To all of the people saying “Christ you need to eat more fibre” - think about people with chronic bowel issues (a massive number of people), if you go to the loo more than once a day and keep needing to wipe it can be uncomfortable with dry TP, so wet wipes/water can be less aggressive on the skin. It’s not about how dirty you get.

I self-catheterize and am given plastic-containing wipes by the NHS continence clinic. I have to use them as they help prevent infections that would land me in hospital with a relapse to my medical condition. I dispose of in a provided "nappy" sack.

I'm also blessed with a chronic bowel condition that makes me take several trips to the loo every day. As PP says, I can get sore so use my own plastic-free wet wipes that go in my nappy sacks. A shower after every BM is physically impossible for me as well as bad for my skin, the planet and my bank balance (as I'm on a water meter).

I actually remember using an outhouse with squares of newspaper strung on a hook and am thankful that times have changed.

I wonder if my friend is reading this thread. For years she's used baby wipes, complains of a regularly blocked sewer but still doesn't seem to understand she's causing the problem. She moaned that putting them in a nappy sack was "dirty" while changing her grandchild's nappy and throwing it in one.

Plastic in landfill is a problem I know and hate that I'm contributing to but why aren't ALL wipes at least bio-degradable?

RudsyFarmer · 04/04/2023 12:10

I do like wet wipes but they’re saying non-plastic ones will avoid the ban. So the company’s will have to change their wipes and make them bio-degradable.

JudgeJ · 04/04/2023 12:10

Albiboba · 04/04/2023 11:11

@Broadbeachshallow Water and cloth are viable options, certainly at home.

Hmm have you ever tried to change at least 2 nappies out of the house with just a cloth and water??

Frequently did so when driving backwards and forwards between UK and Germany, no alternative, it simply takes being a bit organised.

IncompleteSenten · 04/04/2023 12:11

This is what I use.

Wipes do need to be fully biodegradable but even if they were would the sewer system be able to cope with them before they fell apart? I feel like they'd still cause issues

ThoseDamnCrows · 04/04/2023 12:11

I live at the coast and walk my dog on the beach every day, I would say a third of all the litter I see (and pick up) is disposable wipes. This morning I've been out for an hour and filled a huge bag, but with it being school holidays I know there'll be loads more tomorrow.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 04/04/2023 12:15

YABU. I nearly fainted when I read the news - the Tories bringing in a new law I agree with.

I can see it must be frustrating for people who use them sensibly, but I've had to pay for my drains to be unblocked twice because some pillock up the line somewhere is flushing them down their loo. We don't even buy the wretched things.
