To be annoyed about Wet Wipes ban

I have never put them down the toilet, but because too many stupid people do, I will no longer be able to clean my bum hole properly!
And don't have a large bathroom so there's no space for a bidet, before anyone suggests it.

Or buy something like this:

https://mypura.com/products/eco-baby-wipes

The packaging is looks to be plastic. It's 'recyclable'. Like most plastic. But still single-use plastic, I believe.

Blimey this is an eye opening thread.

For all of those worried about bum guns - they work very well, when you do your post gun pat to dry off the toilet paper is clean, just damp with water. They can be quite high pressure, so you need to work out how much to press the lever down (preferably not whilst pointing the gun at your arse)!

No I don’t have one at home, but having used them plenty abroad, you do start to wonder why we don’t have them more in the UK.

To all of the people saying “Christ you need to eat more fibre” - think about people with chronic bowel issues (a massive number of people), if you go to the loo more than once a day and keep needing to wipe it can be uncomfortable with dry TP, so wet wipes/water can be less aggressive on the skin. It’s not about how dirty you get.

emmsyg · 04/04/2023 11:16

We've been using reusable nappies and wipes for 2 years now and they're honestly brilliant. We installed one of the little attachment spray hoses to the toilet (easy to do yourself) and I use it to spray down any dirty nappies and wipes before going in the washing machine.

I can see why cloth nappies aren't for everyone, but honestly, the wipes are so much better than disposables for the job. I've used cheeky wipes, bear bott, nipper nappies, they're all great. You use far less wipes per clean than with disposables. We have a cheeky wipes box, and every 3 days or so I put a half of a poppets cloth wipe solution (you don't need this but seems to stop them going musty if you're storing them wet), mix it in water, soak all the wipes then wring them out and leave them damp in the box until they're used. I genuinely haven't bought a disposable wet wipe in 2 years - I just take a handful from the box in a wet bag if I'm going out.

I used disposable nappies and wipes for my first, so I've tried both and I hope this doesn't sound preachy, I just think its a genuinely very easy eco swap to make to using the wipes. You don't even need to buy specific wipes - a cut up cotton towel and a tupperware will do the same job.

Whilst I definitely do not flush these, they are 100% plant based.

I have a septic tank, so don’t - can’t - flush anything other than body waste and non-plasticised toilet roll. Also can’t use bleach as it would kill the microbes that break down the shit.

When we first moved here 24 years ago, the septic tank blocked and there were DISPOSABLE NAPPIES in there, along with tampons and sanitary towels. Who on earth would flush nappies? HOW could you flush a nappy anyway? How would it fit and not block the toilet?

Anyway, that was the first and last time our septic tank has ever blocked, and it’s a shame more people don’t have them, as you can’t just treat the toilet as a convenient flushing dustbin. People are so lazy and selfish.

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

I used one on a liveaboard diving holiday in Egypt. They're great.

I have one at home and have for years the best thing ever for a quick total clean after a poo. Saves on toilet paper as well.

Albiboba · 04/04/2023 11:11

@Broadbeachshallow Water and cloth are viable options, certainly at home.

Hmm have you ever tried to change at least 2 nappies out of the house with just a cloth and water??

How do you think people used to manage? Wet Wipes haven't been around forever.

KimberleyClark · 04/04/2023 11:20

The toilet paper comes away clean when I’ve finished my wipe though.

bitcharming · 04/04/2023 11:20

why don't you put a bit of soap and water on your toilet paper, that's what I do. or sometimes if the kids aren't passing me off I'll have a wash sat over the bath next to the tap end.
I always feel cleaner after a proper wash than I do with a 'soapy wipe' anyway.

of course you could be a freak wanting stories from women who wash their bums so. in that case I also eat poo and rub poo over naked ladies. Enjoy wanking over that!

Over here in Portugal you have to install a bidet when building, our architect put Brazilian bidets in the small bathrooms. Its a hose that fit easily onto your water inlet pipe - it saves quite a lot of toilet paper and wakes you up as well. I prefer them to actual bidets which are just another thing to clean. This is a link, really for €22 they pay for themselves pretty quickly. https://www.fruugo.pt/chrome-bidet-shattaf-douche-spray-tap-higienico-banheiro-muculmano-chuveiro-mangueira-de-cabeca/p-93399524-195893456?language=pt&ac=ProductCasterAPI&gclid=Cj0KCQjwla-hBhD7ARIsAM9tQKuD75Fhk60OgzltqQtPgETQJK-snmWgtzlNKCEsvpfoSCzz8DPyVqEaAtZKEALw_wcB

Fitting one of these to your toilet feed is against UK water by-laws unless installed in a very specific way as any bacteria after use can in theory multiply and end up in your drinking water.

Lcb123 · 04/04/2023 11:25

Maybe read the article? Although maybe not as it’s the Sun. We’re killing the environment- this is a drop in the ocean in what needs to be done. Use a reusable wipe

Dirtydiesel · 04/04/2023 11:26

"To add, depending on situations mentioned like carer, you would use toilet paper first then wash with cloth"

If you can speak from actual experience of changing your severely disabled incontinent teenager with challenging aggressive behaviour every day then I am all ears.

Albiboba · 04/04/2023 11:30

I honestly don’t think it is an easy swap for many people. Maybe you’re largely at home more since you’re doing it with your second.
When my baby was 0-1 I was regularly flying to stay with family, and regularly going back and forth on a 6 hour journey to meet DH at inlaws where he was caring for a family member. I honestly can’t imagine anything worse than trying to clean with a Tupperware full of water and a piece of cloth while out of the house for 12 hours and then not staying at home after that.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 04/04/2023 11:30

WTF is this about?

Wipe your arse with toilet paper like the rest of us. Or have a wash if you feel dirty.

Albiboba · 04/04/2023 11:31

magicthree · 04/04/2023 11:18

How do you think people used to manage? Wet Wipes haven't been around forever.

Well largely before wipes were invented we lived a very different life. Washing machines haven’t been around forever either and yet I’m sure you aren’t forgoing that because ‘how do you think people used to manage’?

They managed with a lot of work and hassle, hence the invention.

ichundich · 04/04/2023 11:33

They are terrible for the environment and humans have survived without them for thousands of years. You can make your own wet wipes with paper towels and improve your diet so that your bum is easier to clean.

60smusic · 04/04/2023 10:42

OMG I'm 😂😂 here. Try cleaning a disabled adult who wears nappies after a humongous shit with these plastic free wipes, while I fully support less plastic, these wipes break and you're left with your hand covered in shit, so you have to use two or three at once!

And no a flannel doesn't work, you'd need about 20 of them for one shit, you can't use a basin of water because the person is thrashing around and you end up with shitty water all over you.

Using jugs and water bottles etc😬😬😬 like how, what do you do? Stand up and squirt their arse until the shit is gone? Where do you even try stand or position them? While you fling a jug of water over them.

There is no fucking way I'm carrying around re usable flannels etc and carrying them home in my handbag to wash, when I get dds nappy off that crap is disposed off immediately and the house is nearly fumigated, imagine carrying around a handbag full of shit filled flannels.

Sounds awful. You poor thing

I don't blame you at all

Hard enough with a baby or toddler

Yeah - definitely not googling that one!

You know it's not always about diet? I'm on medication that causes constipation. Also been on something that causes diarrhoea

MrsMiddleMother · 04/04/2023 11:39

Of course it's annoying thousands of people rely on disposable wipes! There will be plastic free one which is the right thing to do but I can't even imagine what the price will be. My youngest is 1 so I've got a while to go yet before not needing them. And before anyone pipes up, I DO NOT WANT to use reusable Wipes while changing his nappies.

woodhill · 04/04/2023 11:40

humblemeep · 04/04/2023 11:06

Very happy that they are banning wipes containing plastic, but some of you have no idea how essential wet wipes are for some people. I care for someone who can't go to the toilet unless able to use a wet wipe wrapped around their finger to ease things on their way. Essential to them. Also very delicate skin, so just using toilet roll to clean would cause significant distress. Please don't presume everyone is in the same situation as you are.

But what would they have done before wet wipes existed?

Does sound awful for them though

ancientgran · 04/04/2023 11:40

herewegoroundthebastardbush · 04/04/2023 09:59

Am I the only person left who just wipes their bum with toilet paper? 😳

I was wondering how we managed when it was cut up newspaper on a string in the lav at the bottom of the yard never mind modern toilet paper. Of all the things that are important to me I don't think wet wipes make the top 100.

Come back and tell me that when you have tried to teach a brain damaged adult how to clean himself after a poo. It took months to teach my DH how to use toilet paper and a wet wipe. He couldn't learn how to use a bit of soap on anything - he needs his hands washing like a little child, I hold his hands and dunk them, soap them and help him rub them together. I could no more teach him how to actually wash his bum than I could teach him to fly.

As to improve his diet - how do you suggest I make a grown man eat something he doesn't want? I'm lucky that he likes veggies, cereals, rice etc. but I couldn't physically force or encourage him to eat something he doesn't want.

Brain damage is precisely that - special needs - not capable of learning something - utterly incapable of understanding why he should do something. And it takes months and months of repetition to teach a simple action (think of putting his own spoon in his own mouth), or the truly huge day he learned to put his own shoes on (granted they were on the wrong feet but it was a start).
