“Laying out school uniform”

I’ve just realised that I’ve never actually considered the phrase “laying out school uniform” literally. Does anybody literally do this the night before? And if so, where? Have you all got massive “dressing” rooms? With space to lay out outfits?

We prep the school uniform, iron shirts and things. But it needs to stay in the wardrobes until it’s time to put it on.

AIBU to think laying it out isn’t really a literal thing?

It's a literal thing here. Laid over the back of a chair.

BernadetteIsMySister · 02/04/2023 21:08

It is in our house!

name985 · 02/04/2023 21:08

I lay out uniform the night before. Usually in the kitchen for easy access.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 02/04/2023 21:08

Yes it is! I used to drape it across a dining chsir with clean pants and socks and i'd pack the book bag snd putvut by the front door.

edel2 · 02/04/2023 21:08

Yep I lay it out in the spare room the night before

mynameiscalypso · 02/04/2023 21:09

I lay out my clothes most nights. I just drape them over a chair so they're ready for me to grab in the morning.

mmgirish · 02/04/2023 21:09

We do too. On the arm of an armchair each in the living room. My husband and I do our clothes too.

Mafelicent · 02/04/2023 21:09

I lay it out over the radiator so it's nice and warm in the morning.

Daisyismynameorisnot · 02/04/2023 21:10

Yes I make sure it's ready but folded if that counts?

hoophoophooray · 02/04/2023 21:10

I have never done this. Usually we are rummaging in the tumble dryer on Monday morning going "who forgot to put their shirts in the wash?!?"

magneticmoon · 02/04/2023 21:10

Lol when my daughter puts her uniform on its still steaming from the iron

BotherThat · 02/04/2023 21:10

If I’m organised, I put DD’s school uniform over the back of the kitchen chair the night before, but it would be a waste of time to actually ‘lay’ it out as the cat would sleep on it and cover it in cat hair.

Ifyoudreamofsanddunes · 02/04/2023 21:10

Yes I literally lay it out, usually over my daughter's large toy chest and over the banister for my son. I feel far more organised when I do.

liveforsummer · 02/04/2023 21:12

It gets put out on the arm of the sofa or the back of a chair in the living room. I don't do it though - that's the DC's job

TheWayTheLightFalls · 02/04/2023 21:13

Yup, in the living room. And book bags by the door.

Albiboba · 02/04/2023 21:13

Why would people need massive dressing rooms to do this? I would usually lay out clothes the night before, hang it on a door or lay it over a chair or radiator.

catgirl1976 · 02/04/2023 21:13

I lay it out for the week. Each day on a different chair in the dining room. Not the prettiest but it’s done and no one is scrabbling around for a tie or shirt at 730am. I lay out my work clothes for the week over the bannister too.

Albiboba · 02/04/2023 21:13

hoophoophooray · 02/04/2023 21:10

I have never done this. Usually we are rummaging in the tumble dryer on Monday morning going "who forgot to put their shirts in the wash?!?"

This would stress me out too much.

Pootlie · 02/04/2023 21:14

Yep I lay out all our outfits the night before

Roxie99 · 02/04/2023 21:14

I drape them over chairs downstairs or stools on the island and my DH complains ....

bluesky45 · 02/04/2023 21:15

Our uniform is all folded so it goes in a little pile of front of his drawers in the evening, ready for the next day. It's not laid out flat.

DanceMonster · 02/04/2023 21:15

I put them over the back of the DC’s desk chairs in their bedrooms.

DianasTeacup · 02/04/2023 21:15

I hang it all on the wardrobe door knob ready for the morning, including underwear and socks. Just for the youngest, teens sort themselves out. Anything that reduces faff in the morning is a win.

FlounderingFruitcake · 02/04/2023 21:16

No… she just gets it out her wardrobe and dresses herself, I say PE kit or full uniform. She’s in Y1. Do those ‘laying it out’ have reception age kids? I definitely had to help her more then.

Badbudgeter · 02/04/2023 21:16

I tend to take it out and lay it on the end of bed in the morning. I have 8yo twins who have an eclectic view of school uniform and will combine layers to achieve that dressed in the dark look. Long sleeve white and navy striped t shirt under a short sleeved royal blue checked dress over long shorts and socks pulled up really high so heel bit is over ankles.

It’s easier just to give them clothes that match. Also it encourages them to get out of bed if I’m there chatting about clothes. Left to their own devices they will roll over, go back to sleep and tell me they couldn’t find pants.
