“Laying out school uniform”

I’ve just realised that I’ve never actually considered the phrase “laying out school uniform” literally. Does anybody literally do this the night before? And if so, where? Have you all got massive “dressing” rooms? With space to lay out outfits?

We prep the school uniform, iron shirts and things. But it needs to stay in the wardrobes until it’s time to put it on.

AIBU to think laying it out isn’t really a literal thing?

No never done this. All uniform is washed over the weekend. When they were little, I got it out after teeth and face washes and they'd get dressed, after Yr 3 or 4 they would get it out and dressed.
We had a good routine from early, up, breakfast, teeth/face, dressed, hair, shoes, coat go. Backs have always had to be by the front door and ready the night before.

whereareyousleep · 02/04/2023 21:17

I have a set of 5 drawers labelled mon-Fri behind the door in the living room with a uniform and pants and sock for both of them. Pe kit on top. This works well for us as my mum also takes them a few times a week if she needs to get them ready for any reason everything is there.

Newname221 · 02/04/2023 21:17

Another lay-outer here.

I lay my daughters out in the order she puts things on - underwear down to jacket.

I also lay the cereal in a bowl, spoon at the side, cup out for a drink.

School bag and shoes laid by door.

I do the same for myself - on a Sunday I plan my work clothes for the whole week and hang everything on a hanger - right down to my underwear. Thwn, before bed, okay my work clothes on a chair. Again, in order that I put them on 🤣

Phelm · 02/04/2023 21:17

I used to put them on the radiators in my DC's bedrooms (including in summer, when it was just the place I put them).

UndercoverCop · 02/04/2023 21:17

DS' clothes for the next day go on the radiator at bedtime the night before so they're nice and warm in the mornings. DM tells me he is "utterly spoiled" because of this one thing , she then told me she's started doing it with her own work clothes 😂
I'm up at 6 in the morning for the gym, I won't want to go, I've put my gym clothes on our radiator tonight to entice me

Yes my sons uniform was always put out the night before when he was in primary, just folded and put on a chair in his room. he is secondary now and does it himself the night before and packs his bag…he says it means he gets an extra 10mins in bed. He plays football on a Saturday morning and often sorts his kit the night before as well.

i sort my work bag and clothes each night as well, just done it for the morning, makes for a much calmer start to the day.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 02/04/2023 21:17

I defo do. We have a tight schedule so it'snecessary. My son has a single futon chair in his room so usually on there or in the spare room. My youngest just grabs what he wants to wear to nursery so not such a big deal but from September I'll be setting his uniform out too.

redskylight · 02/04/2023 21:18

This has always been one of the weird things (like putting sheets and duvet cover in the matching pillow case - doesn't it take longer to take them out, then if they are just folded together?) that people on MN seem to do that they insist saves time, but I just don't get it. We had school uniform in 1 drawer (primary) or hanging next to each other in the wardrobe (secondary) - it takes literally 10 seconds to open the drawer/wardrobe and pull it out.

I'm even more bemused now it sounds like people lay out uniform in a room that's not where the wearer will be putting it on.

QueenCamilla · 02/04/2023 21:18

Nothing gets ironed here but clothes are laid out over a stool/pouffe that also stores clean pants and socks.

Phelm · 02/04/2023 21:18

I used to put bags, musical instruments and shoes by the front door, too.

Cocteautriplet · 02/04/2023 21:18

I have baskets in the kitchen on a sideboard - each child’s school uniform including socks and underwear goes in each evening except for DS1 blazer and shirt which hangs on a hook by kitchen window. Shoes go in a pull out drawer in hall when they get home. Never know where to put their bags though as they need to dip in and out of them for homework etc and they end up cluttering up the place.

I lay it out for the week. Each day on a different chair in the dining room. Not the prettiest but it’s done and no one is scrabbling around for a tie or shirt at 730am. I lay out my work clothes for the week over the bannister too.

Do you use the dining room?

BluntWithAC · 02/04/2023 21:19

I place them over the bannister before I go sleep including under and socks. Makes morning run smoother for me.

stormelf · 02/04/2023 21:19

I put my daughter's (age 5) school uniform, clean vest, knickers and tights in a neat pile on one of our living room armchairs. The same is done for my son (age 3) for nursery. I make sure they are all put out the night before. It makes mornings a lot easier with a 5yr old, 3yr old and 1yr old.

Stickworm · 02/04/2023 21:20

Why would you need a ‘massive dressing room’ to lay out a few bits of fabric?! 🤣 in our house uniform is folded on the dining room table for the morning!

Tellmethespoiler · 02/04/2023 21:20

I lay out my clothes too. I put them on a chair in the order I put them on -ie, underwear on top, shirt underneath, etc.

Fudgewomble · 02/04/2023 21:20

Yip have always laid out. And now DD14 she can’t turn off light until uniform laid out on floor for next day. Dd10 has a child size clothes valet thing in her room for the laying out.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 02/04/2023 21:20

Literally laid out here. When they were smaller I did it. But both my girls now lay their uniform for the next day themselves now. In their bedrooms on a chair.

Far less frantic and stress inducing to discover a missing bit of kit in the evening before than the morning of. The short wash and dehumidifier has saved us a couple of times.

PippaF2 · 02/04/2023 21:20

I don't lay it out. I put everything on a hanger, including pants and socks/tights etc and hang it on their wardrobe door.

I do the same for the outfit I'm going to wear.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/04/2023 21:21

Ever since they were small we've made clothes people on the floor Grin. DS is 10 and still does it with all his uniform / sports kits

redskylight · 02/04/2023 21:22

FlounderingFruitcake · 02/04/2023 21:16

No… she just gets it out her wardrobe and dresses herself, I say PE kit or full uniform. She’s in Y1. Do those ‘laying it out’ have reception age kids? I definitely had to help her more then.

I suspect there are a lot of poster on here doing it for much older primary school children. It wouldn't surprise me if some were even doing it for secondary school age children.

I'm with you. It's not that hard or time consuming to just get some clothes out, surely? The hard bit is making sure they are washed and ready to go.

Funnyfive · 02/04/2023 21:23

Never laid out clothing, also never ironed one item of my kids school clothing either.

PippaF2 · 02/04/2023 21:25

Funnyfive · 02/04/2023 21:23

Never laid out clothing, also never ironed one item of my kids school clothing either.

Amen to that!

kitsuneghost · 02/04/2023 21:25

I always laced out my uniform, Usually on my dressing table chair.
I still lay out my work clothes aka throw a dress over the bannister

dutysuite · 02/04/2023 21:26

No I just iron the weeks uniform and hang it up in their wardrobes
