“Laying out school uniform”

I’ve just realised that I’ve never actually considered the phrase “laying out school uniform” literally. Does anybody literally do this the night before? And if so, where? Have you all got massive “dressing” rooms? With space to lay out outfits?

We prep the school uniform, iron shirts and things. But it needs to stay in the wardrobes until it’s time to put it on.

AIBU to think laying it out isn’t really a literal thing?

The laying out makes sense to me-not something I would do myself but I can see the logic. However where is the logic in putting it in the kitchen/dining room/living room? Presumably that's not where your getting dressed so how does it save time?

Bridesmaidingreen · 02/04/2023 21:26

Lovely memories from my owns childhood of laying my uniform on the radiator the night before and then putting it on nice and warm in the morning!

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 02/04/2023 21:26

@redskylight we have PE uniform to pack on set days and children lose house points, at my son's school, for not having full uniform. Occasionally I'm too knackered to do the day before and it works out fine but my preference, mentally, is to have it good to go.
We do get ready in the spare room which is set up for speed with a sofa and kids table and chair for breakfast.
Today I was thinking a home help a few times a week to wash and iron and do the shopping would be grand!😝

TokyoSushi · 02/04/2023 21:27

I iron the night before and hand them over the bannister on the landing, so I suppose I do lay them out!

Botw1 · 02/04/2023 21:27

Never done this

No idea why you would.

GoodChat · 02/04/2023 21:27

You could just hang them on a clothes hanger on the door

Marchforward · 02/04/2023 21:27

FlounderingFruitcake · 02/04/2023 21:16

No… she just gets it out her wardrobe and dresses herself, I say PE kit or full uniform. She’s in Y1. Do those ‘laying it out’ have reception age kids? I definitely had to help her more then.

Youngest is summer born, in school nursery and fuck me can she make getting dressed into the longest activity in the world. School uniform is dumped on the playroom sofa the night before.

Oakyloaky · 02/04/2023 21:27

Yes I did when my children were school age from reception to yr 12 ! I am not a morning person so have to be as certain as I can be that everything is ready .
I still decide the evening before what I am wearing the next day .
Have now got tomorrows clothes out 😊

I suspect there are a lot of poster on here doing it for much older primary school children. It wouldn't surprise me if some were even doing it for secondary school age children.

I'm with you. It's not that hard or time consuming to just get some clothes out, surely? The hard bit is making sure they are washed and ready to go.

Mine don’t have a wardrobe as their bedrooms aren’t big enough, so I keep their uniform in my room. I put it out in their bedrooms the night before as that’s where they get dressed.

My daughter could get ready herself from 5, as long as the clothes were all there for her. I help with buttons on her polo because they are really fiddly!

My partner is already at work when we are all getting ready; I’ve to get myself and two kids ready - my youngest has just turned 1 so still needs feeding and so on. We need to be out the door by 7:30. If I didn’t have everything laid out it would not be possible unless we got up at ridiculous o clock.

Shabang21 · 02/04/2023 21:28

Yup, I put them on the radiator the night before, shoes and bags packed by the front door, and coats on the back of the chair. I do my work clothes like this too. I’m usually shockingly disorganised (and my family are messy buggers) so this tiny act makes me feel like my entire household isn’t falling to shit 😁

Stressfordays · 02/04/2023 21:28

I lay school uniform in little piles on the back of sofa for each kid, bag packed and ready in front of it and their shoes on the floor in front of their pile. Water bottles/packed lunches ready in the fridge. I have 3 kids so like to be organised. I lay my own stuff out too. Id also lay clothes out if weve got to be up and out early in the morning on weekends and holidays.

I do it for... myself. To know it's all there. Without sering the clothes in the flesh, I can't guarantee they're all clean and ready to go.
I'm not and never will be organised enough to prepare a whole wardrobe of clean and ready uniform bits, including matching socks and all for the week ahead.
The things get "found" the night before and laid out. Sometimes necessitates a last minute wash&dry.
I bet that's how many parents roll through the school years.

Nuevabegin · 02/04/2023 21:29

I have three dcs so definitely have them all out the night before ,with socks etc , lunch boxes out and drink bottles etc. Makes the mornings so much easier.

Equimum · 02/04/2023 21:29

At the beginning of the week, I get it out and make a neat pile each evening. By Thursday, we are rummaging through the clean laundry pile!

Nuevabegin · 02/04/2023 21:30

@Stressfordays snap! Three dcs is a lot to get organised everyday

TheSnootiestFox · 02/04/2023 21:30

I do because it just makes life easier. I also do them a buffet breakfast and then I just take to the sitting room with a coffee while chaos ensues, and bundle them in the car and take them to school. Job done!

Girasoli · 02/04/2023 21:31

DH always does this. Lays out DS1 school uniform and underwear in a pile on top of the chest of drawers.

He doesn't do DS2s nursery clothes though because we still get him dressed.

BelindaBears · 02/04/2023 21:31

It doesn’t save any meaningful time yanking it out of the wardrobe the night before and “laying out” compared to yanking it out of the wardrobe to put on in the morning, so it’s not something I bother with.

bakewellbride · 02/04/2023 21:31

Laid out on an arm of living room sofa, as that's where 4.5 y/o ds gets dressed for school. Mine and baby dd's outfits also laid out there!

Presumably these families are like mine and eat first, then teeth and dressed. My daughter actually does get ready in the living room though, so I can help her whilst I simultaneously drink coffee and feed her brother.

Growing up ours were hung on the dining room door (a side each) and we grabbed them as we finished breakfast.

So you're not scrabbling around in the morning for something only to discover it screwed up down the side of a bed and in need of a wash? At least if you discover something is missing the night before you can get it on a quick wash and dried by morning?

Botw1 · 02/04/2023 21:33

@Stressfordays

We have multiple of each thing

🤷‍♀️

Forgooodnesssakenow · 02/04/2023 21:34

Back in the 80s I shared a room with my 3 sisters and our uniforms were 'laid iut' on the ottoman at the top of the stairs and we took it in turns to get dressed in the bathroom depending on whose bus left first. Good times. I kay out my kids nursery clothes in the living room so we get up, take them down and dress a kid each or I dress them both while dh makes breakfast.

It’s not because they need help dressing themselves, it just makes the mornings much more streamlined.
You don’t have to agree but the majority of posters clearly find it helpful.
