“Laying out school uniform”

I’ve just realised that I’ve never actually considered the phrase “laying out school uniform” literally. Does anybody literally do this the night before? And if so, where? Have you all got massive “dressing” rooms? With space to lay out outfits?

We prep the school uniform, iron shirts and things. But it needs to stay in the wardrobes until it’s time to put it on.

AIBU to think laying it out isn’t really a literal thing?

I think I've only ever laid out their clothes and costumes for special events.

cocksstrideintheevening · 02/04/2023 21:44

Yes. Radiator in winter, back of chairs when
Warmer.

BaileysBreakfast · 02/04/2023 21:44

Gosh my Dc have to find their clothes themselves from various cupboards, drawers and washing airers —the laundry basket— as I’ve already gone to work by the time they get up and gps take them to school. I do get texts sometimes when they can’t find things. They’re Y3 and Y5

Interesting! So, what age do you stop laying everything out?

My 7yo gets it all laid out himself? Ill continue to remind them to get their stuff ready for school until they're no longer at school I guess! Just like asking them if they've done their homework?

Botw1 · 02/04/2023 21:44

But I havent ever laid stuff out for them.

They've always (since they were able) picked theory own clothes and got dressed themselves

Dreamysaurus · 02/04/2023 21:45

I lay it out OK the radiator so it's nice and warm. I do that for school uniform and DHs undies.

He makes me my morning coffee and I provide toasty pants. What a marriage!

😂

I've never understood the need for this, if there's a designated space for school uniform like a wardrobe, why does it need pulling out the night before? What benefit does that give?

My daughter can’t reach her wardrobe, but she can reach the chair. I’d need to stop what I was doing (which is feeding the baby and getting myself ready) to go and get it for her. If it’s on the chair I just tell her to get dressed.

We have the opposite rule, because my dd can’t eat anything or brush her teeth without getting every item of clothing covered. It’s a skill, to be honest.

I hear you. We used to have this when DD was younger, but also a lot of trouble getting her out to get to school on time.

In the end her reception teacher told us to do the uniform first rule, and just not care if DD was caked with weetabix and toothpaste before she even started. (She usually came home caked with lunch anyway so it hardly made a difference 😂)

I’m at work before mine leave for school too, that’s why I have it laid out the night before. Far less stressful for me than getting last minute messages when I’m on my way to work because they can’t find stuff!

Ooonafoo · 02/04/2023 21:46

Yes laid them out in their bedrooms - also x5 pants and x5 socks for the week ahead on Monday morning

Museya15 · 02/04/2023 21:46

Yes, I lay out the uniform, I have to as my 80 year old dad takes my daughter to school twice a week. if I didn't, my child would be going into school dressed as Elsa.

Lachimolala · 02/04/2023 21:46

It gets hung up on the back of the bedroom door in my daughters room, just on a hanger on one of the coat hooks. In my two sons I fold it and put it on their desk chair, it just makes for easy grabbing in the morning.

FunnysInLaJardin · 02/04/2023 21:46

Until my DC got old enough to do it for themselves, I always put their uniform out on their bedrooms chairs

ShippingForecastMeditator · 02/04/2023 21:47

I used to put it all on the radiator in the winter and over the arm of the chair in the summer. Always put my own clothes out the night before too. Can't stand rushing and having to search for stuff in the morning.

Cuwins · 02/04/2023 21:47

@Stressfordays yes I guess football kit is the sort of material that dries very quickly.
Other than underwear I don't think any of our clothes would be dry that quickly at this time of year- height of summer yes probably.

Cute! But yes probably not acceptable to school!

calmby · 02/04/2023 21:49

In my DD’s case it would mean drawers left open with items left half hanging out of them all over the floor, as she rooted around to find her “favourite” skirt or jumper or whatever, and left all the other discarded things trailing everywhere.

But then how do they ever learn to do these things for themselves? Learning that raiding drawers makes a mess for someone, them, to tidy up soon stops them. My son has naturally messy tendencies, ADHD, but he is capable of going into drawers and getting what he needs, yes he made a mess sometimes, but it's his to tidy, not mine, it clicks eventually.

I’m utterly gobsmacked the number of parents who lay their kids uniforms out for them 😳😳😳.

No wonder the kids in my class can’t do a thing for themselves 😬.

MelroseGrainger · 02/04/2023 21:49

redskylight · 02/04/2023 21:18

This has always been one of the weird things (like putting sheets and duvet cover in the matching pillow case - doesn't it take longer to take them out, then if they are just folded together?) that people on MN seem to do that they insist saves time, but I just don't get it. We had school uniform in 1 drawer (primary) or hanging next to each other in the wardrobe (secondary) - it takes literally 10 seconds to open the drawer/wardrobe and pull it out.

I'm even more bemused now it sounds like people lay out uniform in a room that's not where the wearer will be putting it on.

I agree! The poster who lays out the entire weeks’s clothes in the dining room, the one who has special drawers in the living room labelled by the days of the week, the one who lays the clothes out in order they are pit on, alongside a bowl and spoon and cereal…so bizarre! My daughter is two years old and can get her own clothes out of her drawers. Who has the time and energy to micro-manage a much older child to that degree? They’ll never ever learn any independence.

Whatifitallgoesright · 02/04/2023 21:49

Please tell me these are Primary kids!

How very nasty of you

Yeah, we struggle with timings too, but unfortunately it’s me who ends up late, she goes to breakfast club so she’s got a nice leisurely second breakfast with friends whilst I rush off to work looking like I’ve ran a marathon and fought off a mountain lion en route.

Did you know a bowl of cereal can last an entire hour?! Because it can! And we don’t even do any screens at breakfast either.

😂 Actually there is a bit of this too. I'm home, but DCs regularly have to go hunting through their (clean but yet to be put away) laundry boxes or the drying rack... We aren't always organised enough for everything to make it back to the wardrobe in time 🙈

poppettypop · 02/04/2023 21:50

I used to put my sons on the banister the night before.
I even went so far and the first thing he put on was on the top ( boxers and vests, then shirt then trousers then tie and jumper !!).
I did stop once he was at senior school.
Do the same for DGC when they stay over.

PinkSyCo · 02/04/2023 21:51

I used to hang them up on a hook on their bedroom doors.
