The daily fail have really gone after Thomas Cashman's partner in the paper today, painting her as a gangsters moll.

Do you think she really knew what he was up to? What's the feeling in Liverpool towards her?

AIBU to feel sorry for his kids and wonder what kind of life they will have now? his son and daughter are also victims in this horrible tragedy now. It's so sad.

It’s a shame you feel like that @blueshoes because it’s not nearly as bad as you describe.

mommatoone · 01/04/2023 19:50

I feel desperately sorry for Olivia and her family, who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, at the hands of a vile dealer intent on getting revenge or whatever it was.
Dont forget this goes further than this. The people in the area where this scum lived, living in constant fear . The families at their kids school, not wanting to cross them for fear of what might happen.
When deep down he was a scummy dealer, bringing misery to peoples lives for his own gain.
I really hope someone inside has a score to settle with him.

Yes, just let the scales fall from your eyes.

Because we rarely know the full truth of anyone's story, and I find I am happier if I believe most people are motivated by good.

catskittens · 01/04/2023 20:10

funny how her beauty shops closed down after his arrest
you would think she would need the income with him being inside
obviously she thought after his arrest there was no point in the shop

she probably will be claiming universal credit now as people like them dont tend to make allowances for lost income they spend every penny they make higher up the chain do and thats why they are higher up

i really hope she is skint

So what about him then? We also dont know the truth of his story (whatever that means), so he is also motivated by good eh?

Honestly its this sort of nonsense bullshit that leaves society not challenging and judging people's behaviour and lifestyle choices enough

A child has died, the pair of them are part of a huge criminal industry which has blood on its hands at numerous levels and people are wittering on about people being 'motivated by good'

I agree. I know quite a few very high earners, e.g. consultants on 7 figure salaries, who liver in very nice areas and have never experienced any problems at all.

VeryApple · 01/04/2023 20:17

@blueshoes are you being sarcastic?

VeryApple · 01/04/2023 20:19

@Bluebellwood129 I'm in Knowsley on an average wage and have never experienced anything like this in my day to day life either

What I don’t understand is, why were the family surprised that he was found guilty? I read an article which said Cashman’s sister said that he had been set up etc. I don’t understand how they’re pleading his innocence when Olivia’s mum literally saw the events unfold in front of her.

Are they trying to say it wasn’t him who killed her? He’d been set up to chase the Nee guy? It all doesn’t make much sense but I have no clue why they were all so surprised

Hi @BlackBarbies , I don’t know if anyone addressed your question but I had the exact question for my friend who is a public defender. And she said because he probably knew what he was doing, there was actually very little forensic evidence that tied him to the case. Much of the evidence was centred on the fact that Olivia’s mother witnessed the whole sorry thing. So, it was essentially her words against his. Which no
matter how convincing she is (and she would have no reason to lie), it’s very hard to convict based on eye-witness statements alone. Apparently, the jury was out for hours. And I guess for his family, if there is no hard evidence, why would they believe a precious family member is guilty of such a heinous crime?

Bluebellwood129 · 01/04/2023 20:33

@VeryApple I imagine most of the many decent, hard working people in Merseyside don't either. You can't judge anywhere by headlines alone.

VeryApple · 01/04/2023 20:34

@Bluebellwood129 very true

user146539089 · 01/04/2023 20:41

@TwoBoysTooMany76 What do you mean by public defender? We don’t have those in the UK.

Might be the wrong choice of words, I’m not a legal eagle, but she works for a company where when someone is arrested and has no money for a defence lawyer, she gets assigned to those cases. Basically, her company gets paid by the government I guess for these cases. So, she really meets the lowest of low of society but has the greatest stories!

Notonthestairs · 01/04/2023 20:53

Tooboys2many - didn't the getaway driver give evidence?

Yes, we do, but they are only available in a few parts of the country.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/04/2023 20:56

Legal Aid is the UK equivalent of public defender.

user146539089 · 01/04/2023 21:03

So called ‘public defenders’ are still fully qualified solicitors. It’s wrong to suggest they’re a lower tier, lower quality advocate.

Maedan · 01/04/2023 09:52

Yes let's make his kids homeless, little bs obviously deserve it. Good god listen to yourself 🤔

Cashman's kids will be in the same position as the children of anyone whose dad goes to prison; their mother will be expected to earn income to support them, with benefits available as a back-up if she cannot earn enough.

TwoBoysTooMany76 · 01/04/2023 21:08

Oh no, don’t get me wrong. She is fully qualified and loves her job. Is astonishingly badly paid for a lawyer though, but has great stories every time we meet. But because of the nature of her work, she does end up meeting and representing some of the scum of society. After all, they have been arrested by this stage…

user146539089 · 01/04/2023 21:10

She’s doing a tough job @TwoBoysTooMany76 and it’s pretty thankless.

Notonthestairs · 01/04/2023 20:53

Tooboys2many - didn't the getaway driver give evidence?

Cashman had a very strong defence from the sounds of it. It seemed it was very much his words against the other witnesses. For example, though he was supposed to have taken his clothes off at his lover’s house, they could find no residue of gunpowder in the kitchen, which they should have done.

Notonthestairs · 01/04/2023 21:43

The driver-

Russell is also said to have disposed of a bag given to him by Cashman, which he believed to contain clothing.
According to the charge, his actions were done with the "intent to impede the arrest and prosecution of Thomas Cashman".

No I cannot say I understand. I certainly don't live in the area but from where I am, Liverpool is looking sleazy and gang-ridden with strategically incompetent police force. Not unlike American cities in the 1920s. The unfortunate residents who have to live cheek by jowl with such filth, spotting it but keeping clear, occasionally getting gunned down by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This is unfortunate as before this trial, I saw Liverpool as lively and vibrant. The locals should rightly be up in arms at police incompetence.

Well I do live in Liverpool. I don't recognise the city as you describe it and don't consider myself unfortunate, and I live not far from Toxteth.
Wasn't so long ago that other places were known as Gunchester and Shottingham.

And most of the vermin involved aren't gangsters making people live in fear, they're grotty little scallies with limited horizons fighting between themselves.

Whichnumbers · 01/04/2023 22:32

If police members are groomed and bought off, these are bad apples.

thats not how grooming works, they don't target bad apples but those that have a weakness, very slowly they worm their way in and have that person on their payroll where they can't escape.

Why isn't this a slight on the police?

because grooming is very effective and clever, they know who got target and will pinpoint someone who has the most gain from their "help" etc if you take 3000/4000 police in Liverpool there will be a percentage that can be targeted like this, as with any police force across the country.

Due to the docks in Liverpool, unfortunately its one of the main gateway to drugs entering the country from abroad.
