Led by donkeys - enough is enough

Bloody hell, I’ve just watched the new “led by donkeys” video. People like Matt Hancock wanting to work for a fake consultancy firm for obscene amounts of cash.

I cannot tell You how angry MPs make me right now.

I have a relative that is an NHS dr on £14 an hour. She pays for her own travel and parking. All her study… she pays for. She is so busy she sometimes doesn’t eat.

then these idiots earn loads, and then claim back loads of expenses. Disgusting in my opinion. They then get second jobs that pay them £10k a day. Without even checking if company is real first.

In my opinion an mp should only take a second job if it’s in the nhs, army etc or a volunteer job for a registered charity. That’s it. No other reason.

I can’t even process this. I’ve had enough. What on earth can we do to change this? And yes I’ll not be voting Tory at the next election. They are a bunch of posh rich boys that want to just look after themselves. Politics should be more diverse. what on earth can we do?

I think a dr on Twitter summed it up nicely:

Doctors are asking for £19 and hour for their day job.

Ex-health sec Matt Hancock is asking for £1500 an hour for a second job.

But, of course, we are the "greedy ones”

Those doctors do have the advantage though that each morning they wake up they are not Matt Hancock. That is surely worth quite a lot?

During lockdown we were inundated with food and drink (not alcohol) donated by fast food places and other companies. We were also gifted lots of free toiletries.

I know people don't really want to hear this but we also didn't take much notice of social distancing at work simply because a lot of the times it was just impractical.

Who do you mean when you say we?
All the other people who don't know what a junior doctor is?

I don’t believe voting labour next time will help us. These idiots will still be able to have second jobs. They still earn £80k (and rising). They still make £1000s in expenses. They can still get away with doing the bare minimum of work. They still have tax loop holes that benefit them. They are all still an unethical bunch of people. All of them.

The fact of the matter is that those who want power are the very people who shouldn’t have power. It’s been that way since the beginning of humankind.

Notonthestairs · 26/03/2023 12:50

"Frankly I don't want an average MP. I want super clever, hard working, empathetic, perceptive, remarkable MPs. If that means doubling or trebling their salaries then do it."

MPs are chosen by central office and local party - somewhere along the line the selection processes are failing us.
So I'm not convinced that without tackling that we will get a higher calibre MP. Simply increasing salary won't be enough.
I think we also need even greater visibility about who is donating to political parties and what they want from them. Ditto think tanks.
We also need a media that isn't beholden to non dom billionaire owners so that MPs stop relying on culture wars to get media attention whilst side stepping important issues.
I'm sure we have some decent MPs who are being drowned out by the noise created by a select few.

The statement he put out after being exposed is even more shocking in my opinion.

"Matt is leaving parliment at the next election so it is entirely expected that he should have exploratory conversations in the the meantime"

Except, these "exploratory conversations" were, to the best of his knowledge, for a role that would take him away from his duties as an MP, while still an MP.

Even if it was just for a future role, in what world is that OK? Can you imagine what would happen in any other job if you said to your boss "btw I'm going to quit in the next 12-18 months but before I go I'm going to spend some of the time I'm supposed to be working for you looking/interviewing for new jobs and using our contacts to to further my own intrests, but don't worry I'll still pretend to be intreseted in front of our clients".

You'd be sacked before you could sign your resignation letter. He's essentially admitted that for the next 12-18 months he's checking out of being an MP and working for his constituents, and will instead be focusing on setting himself up.

Dorisbonson · 26/03/2023 12:52

Thisisvenus · 26/03/2023 12:33

@Dorisbonson compared to other mp salaries in other countries we are not too bad.

I personally think we should do more to attract more “normal” people to politics.

im pretty sure as a life science graduate, mum of three that has managed to not snog a co-worker in my work place behind my husbands back, I’m more ethical and more intelligent than Matt Hancock will ever be.

Singapore (best run country in the world?) Pays MPs over £500k a year. In the US congressman get £150k a year. Canadian and Australian equivalents get £125k a year.

We don't need normal or average MPs. Who wants an average person setting laws? Don't you want someone smart doing it? If you want average people setting laws why not have referendum then all the average people have a chance to set policy and run the country? Oh yes that turns out well.

It is strange the same people who were outraged that Sue Gray might move on from her job as a civil servant, seem to be perfectly happy for ex ministers to be scammed by their greed in trying to get other jobs.

'I don’t believe voting labour next time will help us. '

God absolutely not. Starmer is a wet fish couldn't debate himself out of a paper bag and he has bellowing Rayner as his hapless sidekick. Obviously the polls show they will get in, then folk really will have more than cake at work to get all upset about.

Crikeyalmighty
Starmer is very into law and order

23 March 2023
while Sir Keir likes to talk tough on crime, his record is anything but. Straight after delivering his speech, the Labour leader refused to apologise for signing a letter in 2020 calling for 50 dangerous offenders not to be deported on a flight to Jamaica...
However the Sun has now revealed that at least seven of those 50 criminals went on to commit more violent or drug-related crimes following the intervention...
He also chose to talk about the victims of the ‘grooming scandals like Rochdale’ – which begs the question as to why his party chose as its candidate in Rother Valley a local councillor who was forced to quit Rotherham Council’s cabinet following a damning report into the authority’s negligence of local children. The candidate in question only stood down after a media outcry. Tough on crime? Maybe when the cameras are around…

My goodness you really are a tedious bore aren't you?

I know you think it's making you look clever to all these faceless strangers but the reality is your just coming across as a wee pathetic looking for attention.

Thisisvenus · 26/03/2023 12:57

Just to confirm my relative is a qualified doctor. She delivers babies, she puts catheters in people, she delivers bad news, she signs death certificates, she’s gone to prisons to treat people, she has cried when kids didn’t make it, she has eaten her food in the loo as she didn’t have time to eat it another time, she has felt alone in the hospital at night because of the lack of staff, she has worked during covid on the covid ward where she helplessly watched as people basically “drowned”, she has been covered in (all) secretions from the body… some that have a smell that lingers for days. They 100% deserve more money at this level. sure good times will come soon…. But until then it’s tough til consultant level. Especially in the specialties she is after.

maybe we should treat MPs like this. Give them the job for £14 an hour then in a few years once they prove they are not a totally morally bankrupt arse, then we can give them a bit more.

If you were stupid enough to not let your child have a birthday party on the say so of Boris Johnson more fool you.

I personally don't think it is ok he was going against his own rules but I'm not too worked up about it as I didn't allow the politicians to dictate my life.

You think it is acceptable for the Prime Minister and anyone else who feels like it to break the law @allibaby?

I don't like the law that says I can't steal things if I want to have them, luckily I'm not stupid enough to let the law dictate what I can do, so I'm off to get a flash car from a doctor now.

I'm pretty sure I just said in the exact post of mine you quoted I didn't think it was ok that he broke his own rules.

Maybe like myself earlier you didn't read the post properly.

'On a thread that has had cutnpastova doing their usual.'

Why do you constantly lower yourself to this awful sneering. Clavinova constantly provides actual facts and evidence to discredit the often baying kob style of accusations on these threads. I get it must sting to be constantly proven wrong but calling other posters silly names is not a good look.

GuyFawkesDay · 26/03/2023 13:09

Going back to the OP I say well done Led by Donkeys.

Any MP of any party outed as a greedy, selfish and corrupt sleazebag is a good thing. Root out the bad ones. My MP is brilliant, a normal human being who's not been born into privilege and is really involved and out in the constituency. More like that, please.

LakieLady · 26/03/2023 13:09

Notonthestairs · 26/03/2023 10:31

The really worrying thing about the Led By Donkeys video is that those MPs and ex Ministers must have received security training. And yet they seemed to have done zero due diligence.

Either they weren't bright enough to understand the training or thought they were too special for it apply to them.

Security services must have their heads in their hands.

Or the thought of earnings loads extra for little effort turned their heads so much that they forgot all about it.

Venal scumbags, the lot of them.

ozoruk1 · 26/03/2023 13:13

Do you really think Labour will be any better? Really? That they haven’t got their snouts in the exact same troughs? That of/when they win the next election they will spend the next 5 years blaming the tories whilst nothing actually improves? This country is finished.

@Janiie don't worry about me looking silly. Not sure why silly made me think of this, but is there any chance you could explain why you think it acceptable for a 56 year old to have a birthday party, but not millions of children?

Can you find me an example of an MP from any party other than the Tories who has been convicted of breaking the law while they held high public office?

Yes - Harriet Harman, ironically - the Labour MP currently leading the investigation into Boris Johnson:
11 Feb 2003 - The solicitor general, Harriet Harman, was today banned from driving for seven days and fined £400 after admitting speeding at 99mph on a motorway.

8 Jan 2010
Labour deputy leader treated leniently, campaigners claim
Labour's deputy leader, Harriet Harman, was fined £350 today after pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention when she reversed into a parked car while using her mobile phone.
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2010/jan/08/harriet-harman-motoring-fiine

Clavinova · 26/03/2023 13:33

And this - 2008;
Slow down, Minister... Harriet Harman caught speeding for second time
