Sunday Roast v anything Else !

Thisisnotreallymyname · 25/03/2023 19:24

My husband thinks his head would drop off if he didn’t have his traditional Sunday roast.

i’ve tried to explain that it’s not like it was 20 yrs ago !

So - tomorrow are you having

a) A traditional Sunday Roast
b) a different at home meal
c)eating out
d) something else

OP posts:

B) for us. We like to have a ‘special’ meal on a Sunday but it’s very rarely a roast. They’re ok, but there are far nicer foods available IME.

fitflopqueen · 26/03/2023 09:24

Was brought up having Sunday roasts and followed on with my children. Now we sometimes have this on Saturday evening with lots of leftovers for Sunday so we can have flexible day. Today is a reheated roast lamb one. Extended family dinners are always roast based.

Slimjimtobe · 26/03/2023 09:28

We have a roast or something similar most Sunday’s

today roast beef (5 hours in slow cooker)
homemade stuffing
homemade Yorkshires

I have mash prepared and frozen broccoli as I would stuck to the kitchen otherwise - this way it easy and have enough meat for tomorrow

some weeks I cheat and buy a cooked chicken and then just sort the rest

We often have a roast dinner, but it is more about having a meal that is a bit more special really. Maybe due to being a bit more expensive, or a bit more time consuming. Tomorrow we are not, then next weekend we are highly likely to.

Tomorrow I am making dauphinios potatoes, chicken Balmoral, brandy pepper sauce, tenderstem broccoli with peas, red pepper and red onion and Clementine roasted carrots. Then sticky toffee pudding. So it feels Sunday dinnerish.

Ok, that sounds amazing, my hat's off to you,!

philautia · 26/03/2023 09:30

We have a Sunday roast once a month or so. Last year, we had one every Sunday and Christmas dinner didn't feel special even though we put lots of effort in.

Tonight it's my turn to cook so I'll either make a corned beef hash or cottage pie.

Willmafrockfit · 26/03/2023 09:30

sometimes i do it on a monday, day off
today, after reading this thread, i am going to make a casserole.

ODFOx · 26/03/2023 09:31

I love a Sunday roast and do one about three times a month.
Today I'm slow roasting a shoulder of pork but then serving it with wraps, wedges, corn on the cob, home made coleslaw and barbecue sauce. It will be fall-apart rather than pulled, and there will be plenty of leftovers for packed lunches.
Next week is roast beef with traditional trimmings (on special offer and already in the freezer) which is a rare treat these days.

Ffsmakeitstop · 26/03/2023 09:32

We haven't regularly had roasts on Sunday for years as DH is retired and I work so we like to go for a drive and get something while out. Usually a sandwich or pasty and then maybe takeaway at supper time.
We're in today so I'm making Lasagne (seems a popular Sunday dish) tonight.

We do sometimes have a roast during the week which DH usually makes.

Can I come for dinner please, this week and next? Grin

mogtheexcellent · 26/03/2023 09:35

I don't mind a roast particularly in winter but DH cant cook anything other than jacket potatoes and its expensive.

I tend to use Sundays to catch up with work and life admin so DH cooks. Jacket potatoes it is then.

Allmyplantsdie · 26/03/2023 09:35

If I can’t do it on Sunday I’ll do it on Saturday instead. Can’t miss it

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 26/03/2023 09:38

A) MIL is cooking roast Lamb. I love a roast on a Sunday as long as it’s not hot outside.

Ylvamoon · 26/03/2023 09:51

Today we have a roast, beef, potatoes, carrots, peas beetroot and cauliflower cheese.as we have in laws coming.

But that's unusual we usually have a mix of lovely dishes including homade curry (huge effort and lots of side dishes)
Pork tenderloin in creamy mushroom & bacon sauce with pasta (DC'S favourite)
Red pesto chicken with peppers and prawns, salmon with Dauphinoise potatoes and veg, ... to name a few.

There are soo many lovely dishes that need time and attention. I wouldn't want to eat the same every Sunday... but then I like cooking if/ when I have time to do so!

misskatamari · 26/03/2023 09:52

We have one quite often for tea on Sunday, but I slow cook the meat (either chicken or gammon) and try and do batch parboiled and frozen roasties to take some of the work out of it. Definitely can't be arsed with faffing with a full on roast effort every week. Today we are having sausages, oven roasted potatoes (not actual roasties), baked apple and veg.

LennyCrabbitz · 26/03/2023 09:58

My house is always full of people but even if I lived on my own I'd still want to eat more than soup!

A little joint of ham or pork and then use some for sandwiches or a stir fry the next couple of days.

GardeningQuestionTime · 26/03/2023 10:00

Dh cooks one most weeks in the winter and a bbq in the summer.

ILoveToads · 26/03/2023 10:03

We have a roast dinner every Sunday, including summer!

I enjoy making it and it is DH's favourite meal so always seems worth the effort. Also he washes up while I chill on the sofa with a glass of wine Grin

BluetheBear · 26/03/2023 10:04

We are having sausages and mash (with veg etc obviously). I do love a roast but also happy to have sausages or a pie or sometimes something completely different!

GotABeatForYouMama · 26/03/2023 10:06

d...but I'm not sure what yet.

Stugs · 26/03/2023 10:07

I find a roast really easy to do and everyone likes it so we have it often. But today it's just me and dd so I'm making a shepherd's pie at her request.

WithIcePlease · 26/03/2023 10:12

Almost always have a Sunday roast. Often one on a Wednesday too if I'm lacking inspiration.
DH will probably do it today as I have stuff to sort post-holiday

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/03/2023 10:14

A) most weeks but tomorrow ham done in slow cooker

Sometimes we mix it up and have a casserole

WalkAwaySugarbear · 26/03/2023 10:17

I love Roast Dinner, the family are not overly keen so we rarely have it 😔.

Today we're having BBQ ribs, waffle fries and sweetcorn. The ribs are from the butcher and are massive.

Fairislefandango · 26/03/2023 10:28

We sometimes have a traditional roast at the weekend, though it's just as likely to be Saturday as Sunday. Probably once ir twice a month. Dh almost always cooks it. Tonight we are having takeaway curry.

nomoremerlot · 26/03/2023 11:21

Roast lamb, roast potatoes, parsnips, tender stem broccoli, leeks, Yorkshire's (controversial!), gravy and mint sauce 😋.

We have a roast most Sundays, DH generally cooks it.

Love it.
