Thisisnotreallymyname · 25/03/2023 19:24

My husband thinks his head would drop off if he didn’t have his traditional Sunday roast.

i’ve tried to explain that it’s not like it was 20 yrs ago !

So - tomorrow are you having

a) A traditional Sunday Roast
b) a different at home meal
c)eating out
d) something else

OP posts:

only once a month do i cook a roast, so i appreciate it more.

Shoxfordian · 26/03/2023 08:54

I don’t like roast lunch so we never have it; we’ll get a takeaway pizza later

YellowMay · 26/03/2023 08:56

I love a roast, but I couldn’t eat it often. We probably have one once every couple of months.

We just eat normal everyday stuff on a Sunday. I’m making salmon tonight.

AlwaysLatte · 26/03/2023 08:56

The cooking that needs to be done multiple times a day for numerous people, and requires some skill, preparation, planning and shopping? Versus mowing the lawn which needs doing around weekly for the growing season and could be done by a trained chimp?
OP seems quite happy, and it sounded quite balanced to me. My trained chimp can make bespoke furniture, is a genius at all things technical, fixes anything and is stronger than me by a long way so does anything heavy. He also cuts the grass which takes most of the day with our huge old lawnmower that is too heavy for me and needs maintenance. I love cooking and other more 'traditional' things but we also do things that are traditionally opposite and share lots like the school run which amounts to 2 hours driving every day. We're both very happy, you just have to balance it over all.

I make a Sunday roast most weeks unless it's really hot weather and on days when we are out or busy, like today I will usually do a beef casserole instead.

MrsToothyBitch · 26/03/2023 09:03

Option B something else- the something else being mushroom risotto for supper and finishing up some beef goulash soup with bread for lunch. I am 32 and have never cooked a roast- I only enjoy eating my mum's roasts. She doesn't cook one every Sunday. DP similarly isn't too bothered. He also only enjoys my mum's roasts! I like to cook. I'm just not bothered about a roast.

FangsForTheMemory · 26/03/2023 09:04

I live on my own and haven’t even thought about today’s dinner yet. I only got the last pony Christmas roast out of the freezer last week . . .

Meandfour · 26/03/2023 09:04

A.

there are only 2 options on Sundays; a roast at home or a roast out.

YABU.

gavisconismyfriend · 26/03/2023 09:06

We’re having pulled pork. Less effort than an actual roast.

CharlotteDoyle · 26/03/2023 09:06

We eat out at our local pub every Sunday evening but NOT for roast! Most of the roast-eaters are gone by the time we rock up.

Genuine question: Do people still eat roast dinners in the summer??

Singleandproud · 26/03/2023 09:07

I did grow up with a roast every Sunday. As an adult I have never cooked one partly because its just myself and Dd. Sunday for us is sports fixtures and she often goes to her dad's afterwards so we normally have something quick when we get in.

Zola1 · 26/03/2023 09:08

C or D..not really sure yet

JennyDarlingRIP · 26/03/2023 09:10

Slow roasted spiced chicken,. sweet potato mash, shredded sprouts with chilli and garlic, tenderstem broccoli and gravy made with the spiced liquid from the chicken . So a semi roast. Chicken has wine, stock, garlic etc in the bottom and slow cooks for 2:20 while we're out at the local theatre. Sides much quicker to do when we get back and less fatty than roast potatoes etc

Aprilx · 26/03/2023 09:10

We will occasionally have a roast on a Sunday, say a few times a year. We are not today, we will have a different home cooked meal, DH is cooking today.

Chittering · 26/03/2023 09:11

A.
We don't always but today we are having a roast chicken. I am looking forward to it already!

BellaJuno · 26/03/2023 09:13

A for us, it’s something I remember having every Sunday from my childhood and I love that I’ve got the same tradition with my children too. Plus it’s the only meal of the week we have a pudding so it’s double special 😂

That sounds really lovely, do you have a recipe with the spices etc?

mrsbyers · 26/03/2023 09:15

We have a roast probably once a month max no idea what we are having today - I’m quite fancying a chicken stew in the instant pot

PinkTonic · 26/03/2023 09:15

We have a roast on Sunday evenings usually, or a variation like a roast chicken with Nigella’s bread sauce flavoured potato gratin or lamb with boulangere potatoes. Occasionally I might make a casserole instead. I sometimes do roast potatoes in the week too with belly pork or chops.

Fatkittythinkitty · 26/03/2023 09:15

We have a roast maybe once a month, if that. We don't like them enough to have them every week. So we're eating in and cooking.

We are probably quite a traditional household too although my husband can cook and will if I can't be bothered.

He absolutely wouldn't bug me to cook a roast. If he fancied it and I didn't want to cook it he'd do it himself.

Equally I wouldn't bug him to do a particular bit of diy or gardening at a specific time or in a particular way. I'd do it myself if I was that bothered

HoneyBeen · 26/03/2023 09:18

We have one every Sunday.
Sometimes he cooks it, sometimes I cook it, sometimes we eat out if neither can be bothered to cook it.

ExpatInSlavikLand · 26/03/2023 09:18

I used to absolutely hate roast dinners. I don't come from a line of good cooks (or even particularly invested cooks) and used to dread certain days as I knew what was going to be on the table. And no, I wasn't allowed to do any cooking myself, or even to help, before anyone asks!

My mother always burnt things on one side and never flipped them over, so the other side was always undercooked. My stepfather used to insist on making chips, and they'd always be burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. My grandma did her generation-typical thing of overcooking absolutely everything, so we ate plenty of mushy, near tasteless veg, and dry, rock-hard meats.

Roast dinners therefore featured either stone-cold, overcooked meat and mushy veg, or raw roast potatoes. Yum.

Me, I'm a pretty good cook. I've done and continue to do a lot of research into cooking methods, try lots of recipes and genuinely enjoy putting together meals on the days I'm not overrun with work etc (though I've made plenty of mistakes along the way).

Today? I've woken up feeling horrendously nauseous (thanks to flu), so if I have anything, it'll be my standard 'hangover and/or stomach issues diet' of loads of salty nachos and Diet Pepsi 😞 Husband will probably take the opportunity to get a pizza in.

4EyesandBigThighs · 26/03/2023 09:20

We have a Sunday Roast probably once every month or two.. and sometimes on a Saturday rather than Sunday 😂

and sometimes, if I fancy it, I’ll do a ‘mini’ mid-week roast. 🤭

tatteddear · 26/03/2023 09:21

We have a Sunday roast most weeks. It's the only thing all four of our fussy eating kids will all eat. Plus DH likes cooking it and is great at it.
I could live without it really.
