Obviously you’re not going to be able to tell me for sure without seeing my portions etc but I’m a bit annoyed.

She’s been wfh this week, normally we don’t really see each other. I’ve just been into the kitchen to get a coffee and opened the cupboard to get a snack to go with it (a dark chocolate rice cake if that’s relevant) and she said “you eat too much. Always eating eating eating. You will get fat when you eating like this all the time”

So Monday I had
2 cups of tea
porridge with mixed seeds
a peanut cereal bar &coffee
cheese and cucumber sandwich (granary bread, butter), cranberry juice, satsuma
2 sausages and veg (carrots, broccoli, leeks, swede, sprouts). cherry yoghurt.
Plus water and herbal tea (3 herbal teas, 2 water)

Tuesday
2 cups of tea
2 weetabix
standard size bag of maltesers and coffee
2 pieces granary toast with half an avocado and sunflower seeds. Greek yoghurt with mixed ground seeds. Bag of salt and vinegar squares. Cranberry juice
shakshuka with extra veg in (courgette, aubergine, kale as well as the peppers, onion and tomatoes), feta and hummus on top, flatbread on the side
water, herbal tea as Monday

Weds and Thurs basically as Tuesday except Wednesday I had toast and marmite with my coffee, no crisps either day. Dinner Wednesday was lentil and fennel stew with rice, had a digestive biscuit afterwards, last night pork casserole with mash, green beans and broccoli.

Putting aside the fact that she was rude, I don’t think I eat that much? Basically 3 meals and one snack. Would you consider this a lot of food?

You sound very healthy and have made me realise I need to improve my diet!

Kebsta86 · 27/03/2023 20:21

Marchforward · 24/03/2023 11:37

Are you in the healthy bmi range? If yes, then cracked on. If not, you may want to think a bit more about what you eat.

Are you serious? Are you her lodger?

Kebsta86 · 27/03/2023 20:28

TeaandCrumpetsforTea · 24/03/2023 12:43

Its very rude of her to comment unless it was done as a 'joke' in some way.

You eat more than me and I'd put weight on if I ate that daily. (I am older than you I expect- late 50s.) I would swap the lunchtime sarnies for a salad or soup ( as to many carbs don't work for me.)

From a health point of view, you seem low on calcium and a little high on sugar most days. (sorry!)

2 cups of tea
porridge with mixed seeds
a peanut cereal bar &coffee I WOULD OMIT THE SNACK
cheese and cucumber sandwich (granary bread, butter), cranberry juice, satsuma
2 sausages and veg (carrots, broccoli, leeks, swede, sprouts). cherry yoghurt.
Plus water and herbal tea (3 herbal teas, 2 water) I WOULD OMIT YOGHURT THAT IS LIKELY TO HAVE ADDED SUGAR. I WOULD NOT DRINK JUICE- SUGARY TOO, EVEN IF NATURAL SUGAR.

Tuesday
2 cups of tea
2 weetabix
standard size bag of maltesers and coffee I WOULD OMIT THIS
2 pieces granary toast with half an avocado and sunflower seeds. Greek yoghurt with mixed ground seeds. Bag of salt and vinegar squares. Cranberry juice
I WOULD OMIT THE CRISPS AND JUICE

shakshuka with extra veg in (courgette, aubergine, kale as well as the peppers, onion and tomatoes), feta and hummus on top, flatbread on the side
water, herbal tea as Monday

Are you actually being serious here? You do realise you’re as bad as the lodger you’ve just called rude.

Kebsta86 · 27/03/2023 20:30

Trollsinmyeggbox · 24/03/2023 13:01

@TeaandCrumpetsforTea

I WOULD OMIT THE OPINION.

She asked if it was a lot of food, not a breakdown of the minutiae of her intake. Read the room.

This!!

ThatFraggle · 27/03/2023 20:52

When I started using a calorie counting app, I realised I was eating a lot more than I thought. When I realised a couple of slices of toast with butter and marmalade= 200 calories I was shocked. I could easily have that as a pre breakfast thing when I come downstairs first thing.

Ginger nut biscuit = 50 calories.

Can of coke, like a million.

If I had to recall by memory, I probably wouldn't even remember I had had those things.

Lastlid · 27/03/2023 21:36

Many of us are. We are going through an obesity explosion right now. First indications though are raised blood sugar levels.

Lastlid · 27/03/2023 21:37

It isn’t the number of calories, it’s the type of calories that is key.

I have to pick up the endless comments justifying the lodger's rudeness by assuming she is from a 'different culture'. My MIL is Scottish born and bred and that is exactly the sort of comment she would make to me (and indeed has, on occasion). I am healthy, slim and exercise regularly. My MIL takes no exercise, is skeletetal and I suspect has a life long eating disorder. She now has osteoporosis, surprise, surprise.

White British people can be just as rude as those from a 'different culture'.

Ah, that's where I've being going wrong!

I've been eating the BIG calories instead than the little ones. 😒

Lastlid · 28/03/2023 21:06

Nope. A calorie of potatoes is not the same as a calorie of cheese. Not as far as your metabolism is concerned. Of all your calories were in cream buns that would not be the same as in prime steak for example. A calorie is not a calorie is not a calorie.

EarthMama1969 · 29/03/2023 00:13

Why don't you just tell her to go shtuppe herself? I would never say that to anyone! Even my own hubby! Wow.

Indeed. I can't think of a single culture where it's acceptable to insult the person whose house you're living in.

If you ate 1000 calories of cream buns and nothing else every day, you would lose weight. You would not be healthy, but you would lose weight. A calorie is a calorie.

There was an AMA post where the OP had lost half her body weight, eating ready meals on a calorie controlled diet. She chose processed food - eg packs of sandwiches - as they had the calories written on so it was simple. And it worked. Cut calories, lose weight, regardless of what you eat.

Yerroblemom1923 · 29/03/2023 08:17

She probably thinks you eat a lot because she sees you in the snack cupboard a lot as you have to go in the kitchen where she's working. She might just be annoyed at the constant interruptions.
What does she eat, OP? Is she from a poor country? My SIL is odd about food.

Mirabai · 29/03/2023 08:18

Yes you would lose some weight but it’s now recognised that junk food calories produce far more fat and sugar spikes in the body than vegetables for example, with low levels of nutrients and fibre.

Too right. You would not be healthy at all. So why count calories. You can lose weight by eating to satiety if you eat the right food. No need to count calories at all.

eatingandeating · 29/03/2023 10:03

The lodger may have a point if you're "always eating, eating and eating". However, if you have no health or BMI issues nor even spending too much time and money on glorious food, it would be kind to regard the lodger as a "critical friend" with a smile. Recently, in a restaurant I was told/chastised more than once openly that I had self-served myself to a massive plate!! I eat out twice or thrice a year (and am slim/goog health) and the accuser, on the other hand, she tells me, has been told by her NHS Consultant to reduce her BMI from morbidly obese to obese before he can even talk about knee replacements...😢

Doesn't sound like too much to me. How dare she say that, it's none of her business.

unaflor · 29/03/2023 15:18

Orcubed · 25/03/2023 11:15

Well only because it took me by surprise because I didn’t think I ate that much. I don’t generally give it much thought day to day, just eat what I want when I feel like it (although writing it down made me realise I’m actually pretty boring and eat the same stuff a lot for breakfast and lunch-probably why I don’t think about it much!). I posted my food list on here to see if my perceptions were way off and I am indeed eating a huge amount without realising it. Some say I am, some say I’m not so I’m none the wiser 🤣 but it does seem to be working for me for now at least.

Lodgers’ new lodgings should be ready on 1st April…

OP: Go to your GP or a registered dietitian or whatever diet professional you have on that side of the Atlantic if you're that concerned about your food/diet, instead of looking for wisdom in the random responses of unqualified strangers on the internet. Because there more you reply to people, the more worrisome your reasons are. Your diet itself may be healthy enough, but you do not sound like you have a healthy outlook on food or else you wouldn't skip over all the posts asking you to consider why this made you so insecure.

Orcubed · 29/03/2023 16:59

Really @unaflor ? I guess I skipped over them because it didn’t actually make me feel insecure. I think if it had I’d be paying the posts telling me my weetabix or whatever was evil a lot more heed. As it is I’m quite happy to carry on as I am. I’m not worrying about what I eat (never have, not even when I originally posted really - it was just a post of interest rather than seriously being concerned - because I was taken aback and my preschooler wasn’t a good sounding board!).

Ffs isn’t the point here that the lodger is rude and over stepping.
it’s bullying ,what u eat and your size etc
is your business and yours alone
it’s not ok to let someone make a comment which is making u feel like this

And yet you said in one of your replies that you were confused by the split judgement of the public with some saying your diet is healthy and others saying it's not. Like seriously, what does public opinion have anything to do with whether your diet is healthy or not? Every person has unique dietary and exercise needs. It's not one-size-fits-all and yet you say you're none the wiser like you're looking for a single right answer.

Orcubed · 30/03/2023 07:17

Ok. You read into it what you want to. I don’t need to try to convince you.

Lastlid · 30/03/2023 07:50

The topic of food and health is a complete mess these days. There is loads of contradictory information to be found on the internet, in the press and in the doctors surgery. But there is light at the end of the tunnel and some GPs are finding that they can turn their patients weight and health around remarkably quicker. Successes in regions like Essex and Hampshire are leading the way and only just recently the NHS has adopted the very same approach to be adopted by surgeries across the land. Essentially it’s all about the food we eat. No need to go hungry if we eat the right food.

Biker550 · 08/04/2023 19:54

Wow.... been on here a while and never commented. The fact YOU felt the need to justify yourself to us potential keyboard warrior strangers says to me one thing. You have the wrong lodger.

No-one of any size or shape, big eater or small should be made to feel they should have to get approval from the lions den.

I would seriously consider who you share a house either.
