Apologies if there’s been another thread on this but I couldn’t see one! A police horse has been attacked an injured by an off-lead dog in London. No prizes for guessing the breed 🙄.

AIBU to think if the dog is capable of attacking a horse (I think we can assume unprovoked) then there is a serious risk of fatal consequences to a human from this dog and therefore it needs to be put down?

Dog seized after attack on police horse in east London

Police told owners ‘Keep dogs on a lead if you can’t recall them or get them under control’

@Maverickess Absolutely brilliantly put.

Zebedee55 · 24/03/2023 04:27

Yes, it should be destroyed, but these dog attacks on humans/other animals seem to be getting more common.

Sooner or late, we are going to need to enforce leads/muzzled/both on dogs in public.

A shame because there are many lovely, well behaved dogs around.🙁

HoppingPavlova · 24/03/2023 04:28

The dog should have been in a lead and controlled, without a doubt.

However, I don’t think only ‘evil dog breeds’ will attack a horse. Once upon a time I agreed to house sit a small hobby farm for 6 months. I didn’t have to do anything with the animals, they engaged someone else to do this in their absence. I was just occupying the house. Anyway, there was a horse. My lovely, genuinely ‘wouldn’t hurt a fly’ dogs, never an issue with any other dogs or people, took exception to this horse and tried to attack/bite the legs. The fact it would kick them in the head for their trouble (resulting in yelping, running off and not bothering for the rest of the day) was quickly forgotten the next day. They were a Lab and a Cocker Spaniel. I had to go to great expense to temporarily fence around the house to contain them so they couldn’t attack the horse. It also wasn’t great as they had a farm dog which never bothered the horse or other farm animals which then was unhappily restricted to a small area around the house as opposed to its usual wide ranging area as it couldn’t freely come and go without mine getting out as well.

dawngreen · 24/03/2023 07:26

The owner was the problem not the dog.

WillowKnicks · 24/03/2023 07:35

About 4 years ago, my DD was riding her horse on a beach when a big, bull type dog came flying at them. Luckily, my DH saw what was going to happen & just shouted "DD GO!!!"

It chased them for a good while, snapping & biting & tore y

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/03/2023 07:42

@ALifeofChaos what a horrible experience. The guy sounds like an idiot, Belgian Malinois are known to be breed that need a lot of training and exercise. They are not a breed to take on lightly or for most people to have as pets.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/03/2023 07:45

I am surptyriaed the police did notndestroy the dog on site tbh. My dad is a sheep farmer and farmers ar.elwgally allowed to shoot dogs that "worry" their sheep.

"Sheep worrying" is a very mild term for an awful thing. Out of control dogs can chase and bite sheep and as herd animals the sheep can get so frightened they run as a flock towards danger - in to roads, in to streams or fences or many die of heart attacks they are so frightned.

Ostryga · 24/03/2023 09:38

Just saw the video. Absolutely horrific.

I personally think all bully breeds need to be banned now. There is a tiktok of a little one year old in london who’s entire left side of her face was crushed by the family xl bully. And the parents are showing videos of how ‘gentle’ the dog was when it was incredibly clear it was stressed.

The damage these dogs cause (even through no fault of their own due to their fucking idiot owners) is too great.

Leonberger · 24/03/2023 09:46

I really believe the penalty for anyone with a dog out of control needs to be much higher. This owner shouldn't be allowed to own a pet, never-mind one of this size and breeding as he clearly has not got the capacity to understand where he has gone wrong.

People get away with owning untrained, annoying and dangerous dogs, both big and small and it really needs to be stamped down on asap.

SpinningFloppa · 24/03/2023 09:50

Yes it should be put down but I hate all dogs. Dd is scared of dogs and I’m so sick of the rude owners who mostly shout at her for being scared, she had someone shout at her the other day saying “it’s only a fucking dog!!” Well not everyone likes dogs.

OopsAnotherOne · 24/03/2023 10:06

Disgraceful incident of poor dog ownership and the kicker for me? The fact that even though their dog aggressively attacked a horse for a sustained amount of time before someone (not the owner) was finally able to stop the attack, injuring the horse who had not provoked the dog, after all of that happening the owner still blames the horse. "If it had killed someone" "if it kicks me", NEITHER OF THOSE THINGS HAPPENED. He made it all about himself and how it wasn't his dogs fault as apparently horses are capable of killing him.

The horse was not threatening to kick him or his dog, the dog approached the horses who were otherwise minding their own business. If the rider had fallen from the horse, which was bucking and rearing to try and escape the dog's jaws, and injured herself or died as a result of the fall would he have accepted that would also have been his fault? I doubt it.

If you cannot control your dog, or if it's recall isn't 100%, don't take it off the lead in places where there are animals or people. Don't let your dog approach anyone or any animal. If your dog cannot remain under your control for the entirety of the walk, keep it on a lead. It's not difficult.

Pei^^

EdithStourton · 24/03/2023 11:47

Gah, pressed send by mistake!

People should get dogs in line with their abilities, not their ambitions. If you don't want to deal with high prey drive and massive tenacity, don't get a dog whose ancestors were bred to take down bulls or kill other dogs.

Crocodilla · 24/03/2023 14:39

Definitely OP. I think all bull breeds should always be muzzled and on a lead and I say that as an owner of 11 dogs one of which would be considered a bull breed (by default I hasten to add as her owner died.)

I am sick to death of hearing about innocent people and animals being mauled and terrified by idiots and their vile dogs. No dog should get a second chance in situations like that. There's plenty of lovely dogs needing homes. Put all these horrible bastard aggressive dogs to sleep. When they're an endangered species, we can think again. Fed up with it the bastard things and their twat owners.

Wolfiefan · 24/03/2023 14:41

But the type of owner who was involved in this attack wouldn’t comply. There is already the law that dogs must be under control in public. That doesn’t happen and isn’t enforced.

OriginalMama · 24/03/2023 14:50

Experts will be assessing the dog. The human should be put down though. Idiot. We all know what sort of person he’ll be.

Poor horse. So upsetting.

I'm sick to my back teeth of this and I have dogs.

I'm sick of the attacks, I'm sick of reading about attacks, and of all dogs being tarred with the same brush, even though in most cases it's the family dogs that caused some injuries. I worry it will lead to call for muzzles and no off lead exercise for all dogs and dogs like mine, lovely, well behaved and well loved will suffer.

I'm sick and tired of seeing idiots with statement dogs with absolutely no idea about how to train said dogs.

I'm sick with worry that they might attack one of my lovely boys or me.

What happen to human decency and common sense? Why are we drowning in fuckwittage like the one with the bully owner?

Greensleeves · 24/03/2023 15:45

The dog has to be euthanized, and the owner should be prosecuted and jailed.

The breed (and those similar, which account for the majority of the recent spate of lethal attacks on people and livestock) should be banned.

I would also suggest the following measures be introduced:

All dog ownership should be subject to prior vetting and licensing
All dogs must be microchipped and DNA tested, with a central database holding all the information
Any dog which attacks and injures a human being should be euthanised
Dog wardens should be reintroduced in all areas, and dog shit left in public should be DNA tested and the owners fined, with repeat offenders banned from owning dogs
All dogs should be on leads in public unless they are in an area specifically designated for off-lead dogs (certain open spaces, dog areas of beaches etc)
As part of licensing and registration, all dog owners should have to attend accredited training programmes, with certificates of completion issued which can be shown to police/dog wardens on request.

I'm so fucking sick of shit dog owners, shit dog behaviour, and...shit. Everywhere.

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 24/03/2023 15:52

Just watched it - wow.

That owner is a piece of shit. His 'efforts' to stop the dog were laughable. I found myself rooting for the poor horse to just kick the dog in the head, and that's not something I thought I would say.

My first thoughts were surely it needs to be euthanised - she cannot be trusted.

But, it's actually the owner that is the issue. The owner can't be trusted.

With the correct owner, it could be that the dog could go on to have no further incidents like this.

I think my stance would be very different if he genuinely seemed ashamed, took responsibility for his fuck up and actually made a decent effort to stop the attack.

I do think she will be put to sleep though, I think it would be foolish of them not too. This is a chance to show a zero tolerance approach.

I would rather see the owner served with prison time, a hefty fine and a lifetime ban on owning any animal.

FrostyFifi · 24/03/2023 15:53

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat my huge sympathies lie with you and other responsible dog owners, it must be so stressful knowing that a percentage of dogs out there are both dog-aggressive and owned by absolute melts like the idiot in this case, and that your own cared-for pet might be at risk.

I still remember a really upsetting post in the Doghouse where someone's puppy was mauled to death right in front of her.

Theskyoutsideisblue · 24/03/2023 15:58

I had 2 dogs cross a river to attack my horse. I came off and got a stud in the knee. She had been cross country so had studs in. Still have the scar. Dog owners legged it while everyone was trying to catch my hors and sort me out

xogossipgirlxo · 24/03/2023 16:14

This situation reminded me of the dog who killed Freddie the seal in London. Anyone remembers? I was furious when I found out. It's always the bloody owners who can't keep their dogs on lead in public places. So annoying.

Novita · 24/03/2023 16:17

Once I was walking in more deprived part of the city and a man with bully was there. No lead and the street was busy. Ugh.

FrostyFifi · 24/03/2023 16:28

This situation reminded me of the dog who killed Freddie the seal in London. Anyone remembers?

Yep, owner happily let her dog off-lead and that happened, then legged it. Are people that stupid, honestly? Yes dogs have a prey drive but as a responsible owner ffs mitigate it. It was a terrier-type dog so she should have known.

SoShallINever · 24/03/2023 16:49

I thought that police dogs and horses had the same status as police officers, in which case the dog attacked a Police officer?
It needs to be destroyed and its owner jailed.
The horse deserves a gallantry medal, it did so well not to bolt.
