I was always told as a child I'd be tall as an adult - by everyone around me - but my actual adult height is 5ft1/155cm. I'm female.

Average height for a female in the UK is 5'3" which I find surprising. I know a late teen well under that height, someone in their 70's just under that and two females in 25-35 who are 5'3" but literally every other female I know is at least 5'6" and all my young adults friends are closer to 6' (females)

I used to live in the Netherlands and I’d definitely say the Dutch are a tall nation on average. However, a sizeable minority of Dutch are of Indonesian descent and they tend to be tiny.

Yep. I'm 6'3 and didn't feel tall AT ALL when I was in Amsterdam last year. It was quite refreshing!

It is the opposite for me. Where I live, there are many people similar in height to me. If I go into the city, I don't feel short. I wonder whether the location and its communities are a factor.

SmileyClare · 23/03/2023 13:14

I agree about car sun visors and I’m average height (5’4”)!

Cars are clearly designed for men. There could easily be an adjustable sun visor on cars couldn’t there? Really annoys me.

Sugarfree23 · 23/03/2023 13:14

@TheTeenageYears I'd really like to see average height charts for the UK broken down into areas.
I do think people in the south of England are on average taller than Scots.

But then look at the Asian women lots of them are tiny.

bridgetreilly · 23/03/2023 13:14

I think the average height is actually 5’4 and since tall women can be much taller than that, there’s probably a lot of women between 5”0 and 5”4. Under 5”0 is noticeably short. 5”1 is short but not unusually so.

Snugglemonkey · 23/03/2023 13:14

It is very short to me, but maybe that is because I am tall.

lostinfusion · 23/03/2023 13:15

yes - i'm 5"4 & definitely short

FatGirlSwim · 23/03/2023 13:15

Very short.

Fizbosshoes · 23/03/2023 13:16

Hi @Raahh @DrEllie and @weebarra 😊
Another 4'10 person here. meeting fellow shorties, its nice to (very occassionally) have eye level conversations instead of chest level, and I agree about the sun visor.
And virtually every 8-10 year old that my kids have ever been friends with, have announced proudly they're taller than me. I can see you (well done you, for having taller parents) I'm short, not unobservant!!🤣

Train007 · 23/03/2023 13:16

Yes a bit short but I would genuinely prefer to be short as a female rather than tall TBH ..friends son is your height and it really has effected his self confidence .

Fremdschämen · 23/03/2023 13:18

It is shorter than the average for UK women.

I used to be 5 feet and 5/8 of an inch, with size 3 (36) feet. As I've got older, I have lost height and I am now less than 5 feet tall. I've always considered myself short and it is a pain. Blouse and shirt sleeves are at least two inches too long and I have to wear them rolled back. Jacket sleeves are usually too long. Trousers often need turning up although it is easier now to buy short or petite length jeans which don't need altering. Since I've started to lose height, I can only just reach the handle on the window above my kitchen sink which has always been a struggle for me to reach. I now have stools in some rooms in the house.

Grin Every time I get in the car on a sunny day, dd2 will brace herself fot the rant about the visors.

In the 90s my parents had some glasses called reactolight (??) Glasses that sort of turned into sunglasses when it was bright outside. I felt sure car windscreens should be able to do the same!

Polarbearyfairy · 23/03/2023 13:28

I'm that height and I consider myself short, as does everyone else - because I am short!

Raahh · 23/03/2023 13:30

@Fizbosshoes -I used to get this from a pair of sisters in dd2s primary. One was in her class, the other a 2/3 years older. They were very very tall- by any standards. They stood head and shoulders above anyone in their classes- and most of the teachers.
They both loved to tell me how short I was. Grin

As if we haven't noticed for ourselves??

Raahh · 23/03/2023 13:34

@Fizbosshoes I know! They were lovely- but for some reason my height fascinated them.

HoppingPavlova · 23/03/2023 13:36

Of course it’s short. I’m 5’, DD is 4’9. We are short. Hilariously DH and DS’s are all over 6’ to varying degrees. DD’s best friend, a biological female, is 6’ so they look very funny together and obviously are the butt of many ‘witty observations’ wherever they go.

I was the one of the tallest girls in my cohort at school until end of primary where I stopped and everyone else overtook me. DD was very average in height all the way through to end of primary where everyone overtook her.

I thank god for the boys in my family as my kitchen cupboards are a nightmare and I refuse to stand in a stool. Tbh, if I had my way kitchen benches would even be a little lowered in height as they seem more suitable for the boys than DD and I.

Butchyrestingface · 23/03/2023 13:37

I'm 5 ft 2. I consider it short but not preternaturally so. Was at a wedding once in Blantyre and didn't know to what to do with myself when I realise there was only one woman there who was tallER than me. It was such an odd, disconcerting feel.

Sugarfree23 · 23/03/2023 13:37

@Raahh can I be nosey and ask what your heritage is?

I don't think I've come across someone quite so sort I think the shortest women I know are about 4ft 9 or 10.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 23/03/2023 13:44

Another shorty here at under five feet. I don't feel particularly short until I go abroad. I'm always getting my jeans altered. I should really have learned to sew.

HoppingPavlova · 23/03/2023 13:44

???? Raise the seat? As said upfront, we are a family ranging from 4’9 to over 6’. We share cars. We have one car seat setting for the ‘shorties’ and one for the ‘talls’. Then we adjust those individually. So if I get in the car after a ‘tall’, the seat whizz’s up and is raised significantly in comparison. Can do the same with front passenger but not back seats, but who cares with passenger seats?

Dacadactyl · 23/03/2023 13:47

To me 5ft is extremely short.

I'd say anything under 5'3" is short and I feel like a giant next to them at 5'7".
