I was always told as a child I'd be tall as an adult - by everyone around me - but my actual adult height is 5ft1/155cm. I'm female.

I'm 5 ft 2. I consider it short but not preternaturally so. Was at a wedding once in Blantyre and didn't know to what to do with myself when I realise there was only one woman there who was tallER than me. It was such an odd, disconcerting feel.

Hahaha that ties to my feelings at Scots are on average shorter than English.

I sometimes wonder if the weather, lack of vitamin D plays a part or something.

Rockschooldropout · 23/03/2023 13:49

I’m five ft . Im 50 and everyone has always seemed to tower over me ! I can’t even reach the top shelves in my kitchen cupboards .
my ex h Wa 5 ft 8 both my grown up sons are well over 6ft. I’ve no idea where they got the tall gene from !

tennesseewhiskey1 · 23/03/2023 13:50

Short - I’m 5’6 and I feel short too tho!

Cars are clearly designed for men. There could easily be an adjustable sun visor on cars couldn’t there? Really annoys me.

???? Raise the seat? As said upfront, we are a family ranging from 4’9 to over 6’. We share cars. We have one car seat setting for the ‘shorties’ and one for the ‘talls’. Then we adjust those individually. So if I get in the car after a ‘tall’, the seat whizz’s up and is raised significantly in comparison. Can do the same with front passenger but not back seats, but who cares with passenger seats?

Thanks , not all cars have electrical adjusting seat height so unfortunately no I can’t “whizz” the drivers seat up and down on our shit old family car.

Sugarfree23 · 23/03/2023 13:37

@Raahh can I be nosey and ask what your heritage is?

I don't think I've come across someone quite so sort I think the shortest women I know are about 4ft 9 or 10.

I'm white British- I just come from a very long line of very short women ! Grin (though the latest generation have got a bit taller!)

Tockomtele · 23/03/2023 13:55

That's definitely short for a European person. I'm 158 and I'll never forget when I went to some hindu temple in the UK, and I had to stand in the back ... as I was one of the tallest people there. It was the most awkward feeling (women stood separately from men). We lives in a different are before and there were definitely a lot more shorter women with Pakistani/Indian origins. I have no idea where they buy clothes though, I struggle a lot.

Ozgirl75 · 23/03/2023 13:59

I’m 5ft4 and in the U.K. I feel basically average. However, in Australia where I’ve lived for the past 15 years everyone is taller than me! When I walk through my kid’s school, nearly all the 13 year old girls are taller than me and the boys are like giants!

They’re all really well built too whereas I’ve noticed in my son’s school here lots of the girls especially have that skinny leg look that was normal when I was at school. In Sydney they’re like amazons and I wonder what that will be like once they stop playing sport etc.

ThreeblackCats · 23/03/2023 14:02

I’m 5 foot 1 inch. I consider myself to be shirt because I’m short!
My three adult daughters are 5.4. 6.6 and 5.8

rememberthis · 23/03/2023 14:07

It's petite but not VERY short!

Heckythump1 · 23/03/2023 14:08

I'm 5ft and i'd consider myself to be a short arse :P have always been a shorty though, always the smallest in my class etc.

I have two daughters, eldest started school as one the tallest in her class, now in Year 2 and she's at the shorter end but not the shortest. Littlest is proper diddy for her age. Will be interesting to see what heights they both grow to!

Lemonademoney · 23/03/2023 14:11

It’s small. I’m a couple of inches taller and consider myself small too

Picklypickles · 23/03/2023 14:25

I'm 5ft and its definitely short, a fair amount of the kids at our primary school are taller than me. I don't often come across adults who are shorter than me, it's very exciting when I do though!

ErrolTheDragon · 23/03/2023 14:31

I've found a calculator which gives you your percentile based on age, sex and country.

5'1" U.K. female comes out as 16.7 percentile, 'Kinda Short'

Only one standard deviation from the mean, so certainly not 'abnormal'.

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 23/03/2023 14:34

If 4ft 11 and definitely short! Half the kids in DD’s class are taller than me at 10 years old.

HappiestSleeping · 23/03/2023 14:35

EauNeu · 23/03/2023 12:56

It's nowhere near average, you must know that? Nothing wrong with it but we are talking statistics here!

I'm 6'2" tall (male) and in the course of my life, the majority of women I've known have been 5'2" give or take a bit. Granted, I've never actually felt the need to measure them as that would be strange, but it's very common.

Or maybe it's just some freak coincidence of my life.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/03/2023 14:35

I’m five ft . Im 50 and everyone has always seemed to tower over me ! I can’t even reach the top shelves in my kitchen cupboards .

I'm 5'1, and 62. My friend is the same age but 5'10 or more - I was stunned when she got something down from one of my top cupboards without having to stand on a char or stool, it had never occurred to me people could do that.Grin

Good leg exercise, all this chair climbing though.

Eatentoomanyroses · 23/03/2023 14:36

Very small. I’m 5ft 9 and think of myself as tallish. I would consider 5ft 5/6 average.

waterlego · 23/03/2023 14:39

Short. My (fully grown) DD is 5ft 1. I am 2 inches taller but also consider myself short.

vestanesta · 23/03/2023 14:41

My mums height and she has always been regarded as short.

I am a few inches taller and consider myself shortish. Am too tall for petite but only just.

My teen dd is about 5'4 and wants to grow another inch or so. She's around average. Her twin sister is 5'7 and still growing. She's tall in her year (yr 8).

Gensola · 23/03/2023 14:41

Average height of a woman in UK is 5’3 so actually OP is closer to average than many of the taller ones posting here!

JimnJoyce · 23/03/2023 14:47

its short, i'd say 5ft 4 or 5 is average height

Bibbitybobbityboot · 23/03/2023 14:50

I'm just over 5ft. It's definitely short but I don't feel freakish. When I do feel odd is when I (rarely) meet someone shorter than me. It's a very disconcerting feeling. I too suffer with cupboards/ car sun screens/ not being able to reach the overhead rack or cabin on trains or planes/ not being able to hold on to the overhead rail on the tube/ clothes for petite people being for people who are actually 5'4. I actually buy cropped jeans which are normally still slightly too long but I can roll up to the right length. My main issue though is always, always getting the tallest person there sitting in front of me at the theatre or cinema / standing in front of me at a gig. I was always the smallest in my class. Grew up in Australia where I was BY FAR the shortest, then moved back to the UK where I was one of a few short people. Heritage is north east/ scottish. Family are all short. DD is shortest in her class. She looks huge to me...I marvel at the size of some of them, can't believe 6 year olds can be that big!

StaringAtTheWater · 23/03/2023 14:51

@echt that's a interesting table! Says 5ft 3.5 ins is the average for women in England, yet petite ranges in shops often state they are for women of 5ft 3 and below. That's only half an inch below average!

OP I'm also 5 ft 1 and would say it's short but not attention attractingly so, if you see what I mean!

ErrolTheDragon · 23/03/2023 14:51

not being able to reach the overhead rack or cabin on trains or plane

Otoh, at least we have enough legroom, which more than compensates!

sanityisamyth · 23/03/2023 14:53

MithrilCostsMore · 23/03/2023 09:43

Short. I'm 5ft7" and consider 5ft4"-5ft7" average.

This. Also 5'7".
