I was always told as a child I'd be tall as an adult - by everyone around me - but my actual adult height is 5ft1/155cm. I'm female.

Height is a strange thing, I am 5ft 7 (or just slightly under) and when I was younger people made comments about it, not always pleasant, and I had a bit of a complex! I’m maybe a touch taller than average, but no giant!

CornedBeef451 · 23/03/2023 11:10

I am that height and I think I am fairly short.

Not an issue in my family as we are all shorties but I do sometimes notice when I am out anywhere, so many people are enormously tall in comparison!

It only bothers me if tall people bend over to talk to me as you might do to a small child. Makes me want to punch them in the face.

Echobelly · 23/03/2023 11:11

I'm 5ft 1 as well, I consider it short but not unusually so. I mean, I totally forget I'm short unless I'm in a big crowd of people or standing next to someone very tall! I was always small for my age so never expected to be much over 5ft. My 14 year old is already 5ft5, though, so hasn't got the short genes!

AuntieMarys · 23/03/2023 11:14

I'm 6 feet tall and I would consider you very short.

whirlyhead · 23/03/2023 11:15

I think 5'2" is the bottom of the average range for women.

Women in my family range from 4'11" to 5'10" and the latest generation aren't actually the tallest.

It is strange! 5ft 7 was the absolute minimum model height requirement, for older girls, at the agencies years ago, so it was the desirable height among a few of my friends (a couple of us had done catalogue or other work, early teens, and hoped to grow taller).

SilhouettesOnTheShade · 23/03/2023 11:48

I'm the same height as you and consider myself short

LooksLikeASugarInAPlum · 23/03/2023 11:52

I am five feet one inch and have only met three women shorter than me. I often have to find supermarket staff to get things of the top shelf for me and can’t get my own hand luggage out of the overhead lockers.

Sugarfree23 · 23/03/2023 12:11

It's not very tall in my book.

Under 5ft is short or really short.

Cattenberg · 23/03/2023 12:13

That is surprising. Women under 5’1 are in the minority, but they’re certainly not rare!

Sugarfree23 · 23/03/2023 12:14

I suppose you should also look at where people are from.
The Dutch are considered to be the tallest country in the world.

I think Scots are on average shorter than English people. But I'd like to see a proper survey rather than just my observations

Cattenberg · 23/03/2023 12:17

I used to live in the Netherlands and I’d definitely say the Dutch are a tall nation on average. However, a sizeable minority of Dutch are of Indonesian descent and they tend to be tiny.

Sugarfree23 · 23/03/2023 12:18

Just thinking of the average height thing people on here always complain that UK car seat laws are lax stopping at 135cm, which is about 4ft 6, where most of Europe is 150cm/5ft. I'm sure it's because many women in the UK will never reach 5ft.

RuthW · 23/03/2023 12:19

I'm 5 foot 1.5. I'm short but not very short.

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 23/03/2023 12:20

Yep, you're short.
On the plus side you may well be able to buy from the children's shoes range, which have lower VAT.

Abraxan · 23/03/2023 12:21

Shorter than average but not particularly so.
I'm just under that height. I know several women of the same height and some shorter, but also know plenty who are taller, some much more so.

RandomMess · 23/03/2023 12:23

It is short.

5' isn't even considered "adult" height.

Not sure if 5'1 is tbh.

Fizbosshoes · 23/03/2023 12:24

I'd love to be 5'1" but agree it's short. I'm under 5ft and I hate being this short!
Average for a woman is supposedly 5'4 but it seems where I live average is around 5'8.

Gingerninja4 · 23/03/2023 12:24

Short dd is 5,1 at 20 she us used to being shortest in the family but as she said flipside her shoes come from children's section and she never suffers squashed legs in car /train or on a plane .She did a college trip through some mines and all the others was hunching down and she just strolled through
Where ds2 at 6,4 is always having to scrunch up
Ds 1 is 5,11
Ds3 is 5,5

Where are you getting 5ft isn't considered adult height?

OrangeKnot · 23/03/2023 12:27

Definitely short. I’m 5’ 6” and think I’m average.

oceanskye · 23/03/2023 12:29

I'm 5 foot tall and yes its short! I actually find it weird when I meet another adult shorter than me, probably because it rarely happens.

Plus side is people always think I'm younger than I really am. Of course I hated that when I was 16 and being mistaken for a 12 year old!

Bearpawk · 23/03/2023 12:29

Definitely short in my circles. I'm average height at 5.8 amongst my friends.

JaninaDuszejko · 23/03/2023 12:30

If the average height for a woman in the UK is 5'3" then someone who is 5'1" is within the normal range. No-one would ever say someone who is 5'5" is tall but they are as far away from the average as someone who is 5'1".

I'm 6 feet tall and I would consider you very short.

But you are 3" bigger than the average man and 9" bigger than the average woman. Assuming you are female, surely you must realise you are the outlier, not the woman who is just 2" away from the average female height?

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/03/2023 12:30

What the blithering heck does "5ft isn't even considered adult height" mean?

I am 5'2" (just) and people comment on my height fairly often. My children (5'9" and 6'1") tease me remorselessly.

I'd say 5'1" IS short but not unusual or really different to anyone else, apart from when it comes to reaching things on high shelves!
