To think that 11 stone isn't that heavy unless you're really short?

When I was losing weight a few years ago I went down from 14 and a half stone to under 13 in the space of 4 weeks. However I then seemed to stick for ages round about the 11 stone mark - my target weight was 8 stone. However o can say that 11 stone felt infinitely different from being in the 14s although I was definitely overweight at this weight.

Anyway shout out and much love to anyone and everyone on a weight loss programme - it's bloody hard !

Thanks for the ideas. I do walk quite a lot and walk fast and probably do 3 miles several times a week, but could do more. I also do aerobic exercise on the rebounder 1/2 an hour several times a week. I think you are right about low carb. I tend to have a small portion of porridge or plain yoghurt with banana for breakfast, salad or soup or cheese and fruit, sometimes with 1 slice wholemeal bread, for lunch. Dinner is more difficult as I cook for DH and 2 hungry teenagers. I tend to have a little bit of what they are having with lots of veg, but those things tend to have pasta/rice/potatoes as I have a small amount of that. I was limiting dessert to Friday and Saturday night but have cut that to just Saturday. I occasionally have a square or two of dark chocolate, but generally no daytime snacks. DH do share a bottle of wine over 2 nights at the weekend which is one vice I'd like to keep. I think really I need to up the exercise a bit more and cut my portion of dinner carbs down further and see what I can achieve.

@Netcam You're pretty nearly there- just some tweaks for dinner. You're doing great!

Almost 5' 9" and currently weigh 11 stone 7. My target is a shade under 11 which I'm working towards (nothing drastic, lower carb intake, smaller evening meal, 15 mins of furious cycling on the exercise bike 5 times a week and lots of walking). It's working slowly but although I'm lucky to have long, slim legs I have a massive tummy which makes me a size 14. I have a LOT of flowy, bum and tum covering tops!

I don't consider myself short and 11st is obese for me.

5ft is definitely short, and there's nothing wrong with that!

suzyscat · 23/03/2023 12:44

I don't think it's as simple as tall and short. I'm quite short but appear to be made of lead. When i had a bmi that was obese a doctor glanced at me and said "well you're clearly a healthy weight." Conversely when went down to a size 4-6 (pre kids) I looked awful and my friends were very concerned by the GP I saw at the time weighed me and said, your BMI is in the healthy range don't worry.

That's a long way of saying 11 stone looks different on everyone.

No
It's a pretty normal height for a female
Although a little shorter than average (just under 5.3) I wouldn't consider it short.
It is less than 5% shorter than average.

Pretty sure the average height for women now is 5 5"
It used to be 5 4" but women are getting taller.

It's not normal.

I am taller than you but still have to buy petite clothing for my height.

mybeautifuloak · 23/03/2023 12:48

Coxspurplepippin · 23/03/2023 09:14

At that weight my BMI would be 19.7! As opposed to the 32 it currently is Sad

How tall are you?

I absolutely have no problem with labels but being 5% shorter than average would not statistically make you short unless you have a very skewed sample.

mybeautifuloak · 23/03/2023 12:50

OP why was 8 stone your goal. That is extremely light for anyone but the very shortest of people.

Of course it makes you short!

The mean is 5 3" and on a bell curve you are probably in the shortest 20%. it's not about what % shorter you are, it's the distribution of height across women your age.

Netcam · 23/03/2023 14:15

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 23/03/2023 12:48

you're short.

I consider myself short at 5'3. That is why I need petite size trousers.

HarlanPepper · 23/03/2023 11:23

@Rapapampam I'm going to try to talk to you like a grown-up, hope that's OK.

You say 11 stone is too heavy full stop, no matter how tall someone is. Then you say it's all about appearance - ie, not about weight at all. I weight train, and depending on whether I am on a 'cut' or a 'bulk' my weight can fluctuate between 9.5 stone and 11 stone (at 5 foot 9). I wear the same clothes at either extreme - my trousers just feel a little looser or tighter. Because I train, I do keep track of my weight, so I know that it can fluctuate +/- 6lbs in a single day. That's why saying 11 stone is too heavy just... doesn't mean anything. It's silly.

I think Rapapampam is being deliberately goady or isn't that bright -

You can't argue with stupid!

Justforlaffs · 23/03/2023 14:37

QueefQueen80s · 23/03/2023 12:39

5ft 7 and 11 stone, it's a healthy weight for me, my hips and collarbone stick out

And looking slim and beautiful - not exactly the obese monster posters like Rampapam are suggesting 😂

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 23/03/2023 14:38

5’1” a smidge over 11 stone. Size 10-12. Low body fat and waist measurements all fine but just nudging the red on the BMI scale.

But I can bench 60kg, Deadlift 90, backsquat 90 and push/pull 135kg.

So not overwieght. Just fucking solid.

HarlanPepper · 23/03/2023 15:20

@Justforlaffs yes! Recently I've been trying to heed the Mark Twain advice about not arguing with idiots but I let myself down on this occasion.

QueefQueen80s · 23/03/2023 15:32

@Justforlaffs They're either stupid, deliberately obtuse or have Hollywood standards! Thanks btw 😘

Strong does not mean you are not overweight. Solid is one of those words that people use like big boned and chunky. Fact is 5'1" and over 11 stone is overweight no matter what way you look at it.

Hubblebubble · 23/03/2023 18:47

@Spangasspikeywig not if she's an athlete powerlifter/ fitness lover who is 11 stone of mostly muscle. Then she absolutely would be solid.

Hubblebubble · 23/03/2023 18:49

@Spangasspikeywig oops meant to reply to @Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf Well done on deadlifting more than you weigh! That's so impressive, I ache for days after just lifting the bar, but I'm new to lifting.

littlestrawberryhat · 23/03/2023 09:42

I’m very tall (6’1) and 11 stone is too heavy for me, I feel wobbly and pretty gross tbh. All depends on how your body stores it I guess. I’m technically a healthy bmi but with an unhealthy amount of extra weight round my middle which just won’t shift!!

Fascinating stuff.

mondaytosunday · 24/04/2023 23:53

At 5'11" when I was 10st 10 I was a size ten and it required at least an hour of exercise a day and calorie counting. I looked good but was very slim. 11.5 or 12 stone would have been a size 12 and much better for my height.

MsBump31 · 25/04/2023 01:27

I think it’s all about height. I’m 10 stone and overweight at petite 5ft 1” so 11 stone is very overweight for me.

Though saying that, even though my BMI is overweight at 10 stone my waist is 27 inches which I don’t think is that big. Still, to be a healthy weight I need to be between 7st and 9st 7 for my height, which isn’t v much

WitheredandOld · 25/04/2023 05:32

5 foot flat is three inches shorter than the median and very short. There’s nothing wrong with that but it’s fact. Not only would nearly all female adults be taller than you, but also a lot of teenagers.

aquayen · 25/04/2023 10:05

It is still quite heavy, even over 5ft 10

Applesinmyhouse · 25/04/2023 10:27

I looked gaunt at 11 stone & could fit into children's clothes (a mners dream i’m
sure!).

bmi is fucking bullshit anyway. It was designed by a mathematician to measure MENS weight on a population level. It does not take into account a woman's proportions aka tits and hips. More so, a healthy bmi used to be considered up to 27. It was changed by the diet industry because 25 ‘looked better’.
