To think that 11 stone isn't that heavy unless you're really short?

When I was losing weight a few years ago I went down from 14 and a half stone to under 13 in the space of 4 weeks. However I then seemed to stick for ages round about the 11 stone mark - my target weight was 8 stone. However o can say that 11 stone felt infinitely different from being in the 14s although I was definitely overweight at this weight.

Anyway shout out and much love to anyone and everyone on a weight loss programme - it's bloody hard !

It's only not reliable in that it's far, far too broad a range to be reliable. Or for incredibly muscular men. That's it. The average, non-extremely muscular person is still underweight at a BMI of 19 and over-weight at a BMI of 24, but those are included for outliers.

Most people are at an ideal weight of a BMI around 21 (lower for people of Asian ethnicities). But based on natural body shape, bone density and muscularity that will vary from person to person. As a very muscular woman with large breasts and hips/bum I am still obviously somewhat overweight when my BMI is 23 or over. Though I look clearly underweight if it dips too far below 22. 22.5 is currently ideal for me, though that may push up if I keep building muscle. A few years ago, 21 was my ideal as I wasn't especially muscular and my breasts had shrunk back after finishing breastfeeding. So you get to know your own best weight, but the only women who's ideal weight will be over 25, are incredibly muscular.

I had to eat 800 calories a day to get down to a BMI of 21. I don't think that's ideal. It also wasn't sustainable.

11 stone is overweight for anyone under 5’7” unless you are a body builder. We’ve all completely lost sight of what a healthy weight is.

Im 10.2 stone at 5’6” and need to lose 6 pounds to not be carrying excess weight. I’m an average build.

MonZb · 23/03/2023 11:02

The lightest I have been in my adult life is 11 stone. I am 5.8 tall.

A healthy weight for someone who's 5'6" is anything below 11 stone 2

Really? I am quite tall and I find 11 stone way too much. I don’t give a toss about BMI because it’s bullshit. It’s numbers related to each other on a paper. The mirror on the other hand doesn’t lie. If I was 11 stone I would start a diet.

Your post doesn't make any sense. BMI is the ratio of someone's weight to their height. It's a more useful metric than just weight alone, though obviously it doesn't tell the whole story.

Then you say 'the mirror doesn't lie' - but that's nothing to do with weight at all. You can't tell how much someone weighs by looking at them.

Nosecan · 23/03/2023 11:12

I am a bit heavier than that currently at 5’8” and feel fat. My happy weight is between 8.5-9 stone, it’s been a few years since I’ve been that. It completely depends on how you carry weight, I know other people at my height and weight can look fantastic.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 23/03/2023 11:14

I’m 5’7” and 11st 1lb I’m just in the healthy BMIzone for the first time in years. I’m definitely feeling happier with my size, but I don’t yet feel that I’ve settled at a good weight yet. I exercise 3/4 times a week and can feel some great muscles forming, but they’re still mostly covered in body fat so I don’t yet look toned. So that’s my goal, I don’t know what weight that will be, but for me it’s about losing the excess fat. Currently I wear a 12.

Just like someone mentioned above, people have lost sight of what a healthy weight is. I personally find 11 stone way too heavy, BMI or not.
Does this bother you because you are on the heavy side?

Spangasspikeywig · 23/03/2023 11:17

I think people have different perceptions of what overweight is. For example a person will show as being obese on the BMI sale but insist they look and feel grand. Others can look in the mirror and know they are overweight just by the way their clothes fit. Others will insist they are curvy when they are very overweight and others will insist that they look gaunt if they go to the weight that is considered healthy. A lot of it is denial and some of it is I can't be bothered to lose weight, I like how I am. A LOT of it is just excuses

You can see here how there is uproar because 11 stone is considered heavy for most women under a certain weight....which it is.

Catspyjamas17 · 23/03/2023 11:18

For me going between current weight and 11 stone, size 12-14 to size 10 is matter of being about two inches less of me all over. It's a bit "So what?" when you think about it, considering the disproportionate and miserable effect on my life I'd have to undergo to achieve it, all other health indicators being great and then I feel good, am fit, eat a healthy diet, have lots of energy, and look nice in clothes as I am. Hopefully I'll lose weight gradually over time, particularly when hopefully my hormones stop pissing about sometime in my 50s, but I'm certainly not going to go on a crash diet (again) to achieve it, or do anything other than make long term sustainable lifestyle changes.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 23/03/2023 11:21

I'm 5'5" and the BMI calculator says 11 stone is overweight (just). Apparently 5'3" is the average height for women in the UK today so I maintain that I am not a "shorty".

Netcam · 23/03/2023 11:21

I'm 5'3 and 9 stone 3. BMI is 22.8. I have a small frame and really would like to lose 1/2 a stone and get down to 8st 10, I feel and look much better at that weight. But at the age of 53 post menopause I find it really difficult to lose weight and maintain it, even with a good diet and exercise, although I do my best.

TeaandCrumpetsforTea · 23/03/2023 11:22

The max weight for me on the BMI scale before I am classed as overweight, is around 9 st and a bit. That would be 2 st above my weight now and more than I was at full term pregnancy. Yes, if I was built differently, it might be ok, but I'm not.

Medics will tell you that we should all try to be at the lower end of healthy BMI not hovering at the top.

I also get a bit annoyed at the tendency now to 'slim shame' when posters know nothing about the person's history. I've not always been slim. I went through a very podgy stage at puberty, couldn't get clothes to fit for my height, and looked awful. I am never going to go back to that especially now I'm older and more concerned about health risks of weight.

HarlanPepper · 23/03/2023 11:23

@Rapapampam I'm going to try to talk to you like a grown-up, hope that's OK.

You say 11 stone is too heavy full stop, no matter how tall someone is. Then you say it's all about appearance - ie, not about weight at all. I weight train, and depending on whether I am on a 'cut' or a 'bulk' my weight can fluctuate between 9.5 stone and 11 stone (at 5 foot 9). I wear the same clothes at either extreme - my trousers just feel a little looser or tighter. Because I train, I do keep track of my weight, so I know that it can fluctuate +/- 6lbs in a single day. That's why saying 11 stone is too heavy just... doesn't mean anything. It's silly.

I am post meno.

The only way it works for me is to do low carb and walk 3 miles, fast, 5 times a week.

Low carb is carbs for one meal only. I rarely eat sandwiches- it's homemade soup and /or a salad for lunch, plain yoghurt & fruit, or eggs for breakfast with 1 slice toast or 2 oatcakes, dinner is chunk of fish or chicken made into various things, but with loads of veg and rarely rice, spuds or pasta. YES I do eat those things, but not every day , or 3 x a day. Cake etc is treat and only a small amount.

HarlanPepper · 23/03/2023 11:28

That's not true @TeaandCrumpetsforTea , about being at the lower end of BMI. In fact, for older adults, it's better to be at the higher end or even overweight. There's some interesting studies about it - if you have some reserves, you're better set up for periods of illness. I'm not saying we should all aim for it, just offering a different perspective.

If you are fluctuating between 9.5 and 11 stone, that’s a big amount of weight. I doubt your clothes fit you when you’re that much heavier, unless you have loose tops and stretch trousers.

No uproar. Just challenging the notion that 11 stone is always too heavy, no matter how tall a woman is.

Bunnycat101 · 23/03/2023 11:29

I think frame does matter though to how you carry it. I’m a similar height to my mum but her wrists are tiny compared to mine, she has size 4 feet compared to my size 7/8. When she was younger she was always around 71/2 stone. I’d have been ill at that weight. Those are the sort of differences that bmi takes into account when looking at healthy weight. Naturally she very much suited a lower end and me more of mid-upper point of healthy bmi.

jainirrjones · 23/03/2023 11:30

I weight train too @HarlanPepper Though I've never had a weight fluctuation of 6lbs, up or down, in a single day.

BigBoysDontCry · 23/03/2023 11:32

I'm 11'11 but have a BMI of 23.6. I'd say my weight is fairly evenly distributed but at 57 I do have a little tummy and C Section pouch. I usually wear 12/14.

I've been much heavier and also much lighter (about 3 stone in either direction) but I've kinda stuck at about this weight for a few years now. I put on and take off a couple of pounds from time to time.

I feel I could be fitter but i think in general they say that as you get older it's better to be nearer the top of your BMI (probably depends where you hold the weight).

So I feel pretty comfortable at this weight though I would have said my target when I was heavier would have been closer to 10.5/11 stone.

I eat fairly healthily, low carb-ish and 16:8 fasting most of the time

"That's a big amount of weight" Yes, it's about 20lb in weight or 9kg if you're a metric type. That's my point. It is a lot of weight, and it doesn't make a difference to how I see myself in the mirror (though it does make a difference to how strong I feel)
