To think that 11 stone isn't that heavy unless you're really short?

When I was losing weight a few years ago I went down from 14 and a half stone to under 13 in the space of 4 weeks. However I then seemed to stick for ages round about the 11 stone mark - my target weight was 8 stone. However o can say that 11 stone felt infinitely different from being in the 14s although I was definitely overweight at this weight.

Anyway shout out and much love to anyone and everyone on a weight loss programme - it's bloody hard !

I'm 5ft9 and at 11st my BMI would be 22.8. I've not been lower than 11st7-ish for a few years but determined to get down to 11 this year. I think I would look ok at that. Currently 12st13 with a BMI of 26.8 and feel too big. 10 weeks postpartum and bf though and I could eat all the snacks all day long. Must start trying harder 😩

Coxspurplepippin · 23/03/2023 09:14

At that weight my BMI would be 19.7! As opposed to the 32 it currently is Sad

Are you 6'2"?

BigFloppa · 23/03/2023 09:50

I start looking skinny at 11 stone. I'm 5ft 9.

HelloBunny · 23/03/2023 09:51

I’m 5”4. Under 10 stone is best for me. I feel heavy & ungainly otherwise. I’m smaller on top, so extra weight goes straight to my hips & bum. I love walking, so hate the feeling of heavier legs. Lost the baby weight last year, but it’s really not easy maintaining it...

TheOrigRights · 23/03/2023 09:52

11 stone would put me at 23.3 BMI which on paper is a healthy weight.
However it is 2 stone more than I am now (the weight I have been all my adult life) so for me it would not be a healthy weight, or it would not feel like a healthy weight.

Lachimolala · 23/03/2023 09:53

I’m 5ft 1 and 11st is overweight for me, not only do I look overweight but my BMI is 29.5 at that weight. I’ve been trying to live healthier with calorie counting and walking every day since beginning of February, I’m down to 10st 5lb now. Can’t see much of a difference yet but my clothes fit more comfortably and I feel slimmer. Trying to get back down to 9st 7lb which is where I felt happiest.

slapdashsal · 23/03/2023 09:53

I'm 5'7 approximately and between 10-11st feels right for me. As it stands I'm 12 stone however Blush

Toomuchtoolong · 23/03/2023 09:53

@BarrelOfOtters same,10 stone years ago pre kids and I look back and think wee bit too gaunt but went up to 11 and sat there for years before kids and was great- easy maintained etc. now post kids 13:7 and desperately trying to lose but seems an uphill battle!

JackHackettsMac · 23/03/2023 09:53

You lost over 21lbs in 4 weeks??

Were you on one of those very low calorie liquid diets or did you cut off a limb?

I worry about people doing extreme diets as it’s not very healthy or sustainable in the long term, but I don’t actually have an opinion on other people’s weight. 🤷🏻‍♀️

whatevrrrr · 23/03/2023 09:56

I would look like a house at 11 stone, but I'm 5 foot 1 and slight (flat chested etc).

Catspyjamas17 · 23/03/2023 09:57

Not heavy for me certainly.

BMI is not really a reliable indicator of healthy weight / overweight. Its just an easy one to calculate because weight and height are easy to measure. Don't get too hung up on it.

I disagree, it absolutely IS a reliable indicator.
"Indicate" = suggest as desirable, point out, preferable

For the vast majority of people keeping their weight within the recommended healthy range (which is about 3 stone) is desirable.

TeaandCrumpetsforTea · 23/03/2023 09:58

It's all a bit meaningless talking about BMI (it's a guide) because it depends on where the weight is distributed.

Belly fat is bad.

I am short and weigh 7st 5. BMI is normal. I do not look 'thin' as in 'unhealthy'.

I once went up to 8st and I had a very fat belly. That's where it all goes on me- the worst place.
I've no bum, slim thighs and tiny hands.

You should measure your waist. It should be no more than 31.5 inches for women otherwise you are at risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Your waist/hip ratio should be under 8. Divide your waist by your hips. eg 27/36 = 0.75

TeaandCrumpetsforTea · 23/03/2023 10:01

I think BMI is outdated and also inaccurate to an extent. My BMI is around 19. If I went up to BMI 25 and put on the 3 st necessary to still be 'normal' I'd look, and would be, obese. I only put on 1 stone when pregnant, with 2 DCS, each over 7lbs.

Smartiepants79 · 23/03/2023 10:03

11 stone would make me feel overweight and would put my bmi into that category.
I’m only 5’2” though.

Bunnycat101 · 23/03/2023 10:03

There can be variation in body type. At 9 stone I was looking very thin and everyone thought I weighed at least a stone less but I was exercising a lot so suspect had quite a high muscle mass. 11 stone would be ok for me but not my best. Sadly I’m around 121/2 at the moment and definitely looking chunky especially around my middle whereas at sub 11 it tends to go on my thighs.

Bluesheep8 · 23/03/2023 10:04

Sorry, not the point of the thread, but how on earth did you lose over 1.5 stone in 4 weeks?

Catspyjamas17 · 23/03/2023 10:04

Yes, it's a good indication. It can also be a bit more than 31.5 if you're tall. My BMI is 27, nearly 28 but my waist to height ratio is well into the healthy range, my BP is on the low side of normal, low resting heart rate, perfect cholesterol, iron, thyroid and I take plenty of exercise. 11 stone would be great - BMI 24, and I'll be into size 10 clothes. Any less than that and I'd start getting dizzy from low blood pressure.

TeaandCrumpetsforTea · 23/03/2023 10:04

The best way to see what you should be is to invest in some scales (or do it at the gym with a PT using calipers to measure back fat) that break down muscle and fat percentages. Again, here is a ceiling to how much fat is healthy and where you carry it. Just saying 'I weigh Xkg' is meaningless.

Purplesv · 23/03/2023 10:04

There's alot of dramatic people on this thread, nobody looks "awful" at 11 stone.

OnlyFannys · 23/03/2023 10:06

Quite topical for me as today I finally hit my healthy bmi and target weight which is 10 st 10 lb (166cm), I hovered around the 11.5 stone for ages and although wasnt nearly as bad as the 13 stone I started as I still didnt feel.roght. I stopped drinking a few months ago which has really helped my weight loss. I still feel wobbly at this weight and have a new target of 10 stone

I think you are misunderstanding how BMI works.

Spangasspikeywig · 23/03/2023 10:07

I would be very overweight at 11 stone but I am very small.

Dramatic?

I can assure you that if I went up to 11 st from 7 st 5 I would look very awful.

DP weighs under 11st and he's 5 10 and normal BMI.

Lots of people are in denial not so much about weight, as it depends on build/frame, but over what is healthy.

Chippy1234 · 23/03/2023 10:07

I think in the Uk we have lost sight of what is a reasonable healthy weight. We try and justify the weight we are. I hate to see around town overweight kids with their equally overweight parents. In other countries take weight issues far more seriously. Am I judging - yes I am I am afraid. Eight stone is far far too light especially if you were 14 stone before as a target weight. I am 8.6 and 5 ft 4 and I am a size 10 with a little belly and big boobs. I have a small frame though overall.
