To think that DH is selfish over my jury service?

Hi Ladies...
So, around 2 months ago I was sent a Jury Summons. As I am a mum to 2 small (1&4) children, and with the Jury Service being set for first week or half term ( no preschool), I tried to get out of it, but to no avail. I do understand that they always invite a surplus of potential Jury candidates and there is a chance of getting out on the day...
However, I did give my DH plenty of notice (he is a roofer) and asked that he takes that week to 10 days off to look after the kids (I am normally the stay at home mum) - while I do the Jury Service IF I can't get out of it.

HE AGREED.
Well, last night, bearing in mind I have a week or so before the Jury service starts, he told me he wants to work and its tough. He said I'll have to not go. I said I can get fined £1000 for not showing up, he said "yes it's stupid isn't it" - but won't budge.
I have family but they are actually going away on a prearranged holiday, my DH said they will have to cancel and its not his problem. I am fuming. AIBU?

Official stats are that 365k a year get called and 30 percent get excused, raising 2 percent in just last year, article in DM how one judge is raging that people are sharing tips to get out of it- outrageous indeed people might want to get reimbursed for their time its not like you are a free person. Perhaps if they paid per hour for people to attend they would not have that problem, is it like british version of modern day slavery

why do people put up with nonsense, its like the pandemic of stockholm syndrome

Probably because people value democracy, justice and like a system whereby if accused of a crime they will be tried by twelve peers. So in order for this to work, you have to be willing to participate.

Out of curiosity if someone defers with a valid reason but then the next time they also can’t attend (say due to pregnancy or an exam or a newborn baby), what would happen? Of both times are valid reasons do you just get a fine and arrested?

OP I would try to defer again and if not just leave the kids with him as he initially agreed.

They say you can only defer once but I have been deferred 3 times.
1st time was due to my mental health not being stable.
2nd was my baby was due on the start date he come 2 weeks early in the end but still wouldn't have been able to do it with breastfeeding.
3rd time I was having a difficult pregnancy and had morning sickness the whole pregnancy I also had to go hospital every two days for monitoring until I was induced at 36 weeks. I had to provide proof this time from my GP and consultant.

The Juries Act 1974

Point one- to be eligible you need to be able to vote in local elections, without looking into it, if you dont fill in census forms you are not eligible to vote. Oh yeah, stockholm syndrome strikes again with threats of a fine.

No one is putting up with nonsense. It's just the law. You don't get to pick and choose which laws don't apply to you.

Census forms are nothing to do with voting.

Isnt it a right to also value ones time, not like most of us dont spend enough time working to pay taxes to the goverment. The goverment can afford to pay people to attend, which could also result in uptake on invites and perhaps create a few places of employment, which with 3.5 million unempployed would not be a bad idea.

In Europe people who work in the courts are all paid, trained and have studied for their job..funny how they dont have any problems with their sentencing and neither do they have to bully and threaten their tax paying citizens.

No you fill in the electoral register to become eligible to vote in local elections. It is also a crime to not fill this in or not fill it in properly.

It’s a mash up of ‘does a bear shit in the woods?’ And ‘is the pope catholic?’

I overheard someone say it once inadvertently and it made me laugh.

@Bloopsie, any chance you can stop hijacking the OP’s thread?

I am not british so i might have it wrong google says census i formation goes to office of national statistic who then share this information among other places with electoral roll database?

Lemonyfuckit · 24/03/2023 13:37

I don't think you husband is fair but even more so if you are a stay at home mum and he would have to take time off work (and would lose salary as a result) to look after the children that's clear grounds for deferral, I don't know all the ins and outs but I'm pretty sure you shouldn't as a family be left out of pocket to that extent due to jury service (if indeed you 'should' be out of pocket at all - that doesn't seem right - eg I'm not self employed, so if I got jury service my employer would need to allow me, and I wouldn't lose any wages, so not remotely out of pocket - in comparison your scenario sounds completely unfair) - seems like v clear grounds for deferral, can you try taking that up with jury service again?

I havent and i dont deal with bullying, last year after 3 visits to the door they offered me 25 pounds to fill it in,m..mm.. not quite worth my time yet.

Bloopsie · 24/03/2023 13:43

Just before anyone says census in mandatory, the people going around for census are hired by a privately owned company,i do not have to share my information with any private company and as for the rest, the goverment knows all it needs to know, they sure have no problems taxing me on my income or sending me a bill for a council tax.

OP I would try to defer again and if not just leave the kids with him as he initially agreed.

I was called in 2021 and got a deferral- having just started a new job in a school (call up was for middle of term) combined with MH issues which they accepted, I had offered a selection of dates in up and coming school holidays I could do, they booked me for 6 months later.
However 6m later I would have been 10 weeks pregnant- I e-mailed about 4 weeks before to say I was seriously struggling with morning sickness which would be made significantly worse by the then need to wear a mask in court and also very anxious about the pregnancy due to a history of miscarriages. I clearly explained how this would impact on the court- needing to leave the court suddenly without warning to vomit, not being able to give my full attention to the case etc.
They accepted it (which I was surprised about as the original letter had said 1 deferral) and excused me on this occasion although I could be called up in the future again- and actually wouldn't mind doing it as I find it quite interesting.

Comefromaway · 24/03/2023 13:48

You don't know the law very well then bloopsie. And anyway, the census only takes place once every 10 years. It is used for information. If the council know to bill you for council tax then they will have you on the electoral register. One person per household is simply supposed to confirm the information held is correct.

And no-one will have offered you £25 to fill in the electoral register forms

BentleyRhythmAce · 24/03/2023 13:49

I'm so pleased for you OP - it must be horrible but you've done the right thing.

Haven't you noticed we are sheep when they say jump we say how high?

We don't question anything we allow them to do what they want to us.

Sheep don’t do what people want them to. Just ask the farmer I watched jumping up and down and shouting in rage while trying to round up his flock. It was most entertaining. I wouldn’t be surprised if the sheep have secret meetings at night about how to annoy farmers, don’t write them off as a bunch of thickos.

He’s going to lose a bit chunk of his yearly holidays instead

oh the horror 'losing a big chunk of his holidays' spending time with his kids whilst they're on school holidays. Wtf else should he be using his holidays for Ffs!

Do i read it right, you are uprooting your children and separating because your uusband prioritises bringing money in to put food on the table when costs are increasing weekly over babysitting during jury service- cancel the jury service not the marriage lol. If jury service wants you that badly there they can pay for the childcare.

No mate, you don't read it right.

Can I ask where you lot have parachuted in from lately?
