DH ate extra lasagne and didn’t tell me

Lolabear38 · 21/03/2023 23:01

I’m currently at home with 2 poorly DCs. We are all getting cabin fever so I may be over reacting a little here.

Yesterday I made a big lasagne for our tea. We had it with salad, corn on the cob and garlic bread so it was a substantial meal. There was enough leftover for us to have tonight (planned). I said as much to DH and he said ok fine, he said liked it a lot so was happy to have it again tonight.

I went to bed before DH last night and, unbeknown to me, he had another portion of the lasagne and didn’t say anything to me. Normally not an issue but as I said I was planning on us having it tonight too.

Today has been a hard day with the kids but I thought ‘oh at least dinner is sorted’ except when I went to get the lasagne I was bloody annoyed to see we were one portion down! I hadn’t looked at it all day today as when I put it in the fridge last night there was plenty.

DH was working later tonight so DC and I ate before he got home. I considered giving everyone a smaller portion but then I thought, f$&@ it, we’re having a normal portion and DH can have whatever is left, which is a lot less than he usually would have. He’s now home and very annoyed and thinks I’m selfish and somehow food shaming him for eating the extra last night. He said I should have left him enough, but as far as I’m concerned I did last night!

There is plenty of bread/ baked beans etc. for him to make himself something else but AIBU to be annoyed and not to have left him enough tonight?

Cheese on toast is quick and easy, just bulk it out with something like that

Or perhaps beans on toast?

youbitchesaretwats · 23/03/2023 21:59

Anyway, I'm off to bed!

But thanks for the laughs tonight....

This thread is a definite contender for classics.

Hilarious that her username is also food related...

It's almost like she's got a food issue!

Maybe that’s her idea of cooking, mixing tuna with mayo.

I'm just offering an alternative course of action. 🤷 Is that not allowed on MN? I didn't read that rule. Soz. I'm sure the sick children would have had pizza or a sarnie instead. I like lasagna but I can think of tons of things I'd sacrifice it for.

It was a bit rude to the OP to say that a crisp sandwich would have been nicer than the lasagne she herself cooked. Also silly, because she wanted the lasagne.

Well geez, this thread took an unexpected turn 😂 I posted originally to vent and in true MN style it’s taken on a life of its own! Thanks for all the laughs though!

An update for those who asked… DH made himself beans on toast. He said it was nice but he would have preferred more lasagne, I told him he could have had more lasagne if he hadn’t have eaten it the night before. He thought about it for a minute and then agreed. The end.

Maybe that's something to think about for future. If you love each other and normally have a good, respectful relationship, work things out together before jumping on a website and asking randoms to fire you up!

I realise I'm a bit late for this but fwiw I think it's a mountain over a molehill.

The issue isn't the lasagne, it's the fact you're tired and need a break. Husband eating lasagne isn't a big deal to me. At least he likes the food you cook, I can't cook to save my life.

Have some cheap meals on hand to give him if he's eaten his share. No need to get worked up about this.

Presumably this comment is really for the DH, not the OP? Because he’s the one getting worked up about it.

As usual on AIBU, some are determined to lose sight of the main issue. OP isn’t in a froth over DH eating lasagne. The DH is in a froth over not getting an extra portion at the expense of his wife and kids.

Can he not get his own food?

Grammarnut · 23/03/2023 22:29

He's being selfish. He did not have to snack on tomorrow's dinner. One way round it is to freeze food you want to eat tomorrow - it's much more difficult for him to snack on it then. Have bread and jam/peanut butter/marmite for him to eat for a late supper if he wants - or institute supper as a meal you both share after the DCs are in bed, maybe?

He did get his own food - the lasagne.

Timmysbagel · 21/03/2023 23:32

What did he think would happen when he ate his portion last night? That it would grow back? 🙄 He obviously expected you/kids to go without or you to make him something else, neither of which are nice of him.

Grow back 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Will you be my friend 🤣

ChellyT · 23/03/2023 22:33

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 21/03/2023 23:06

He chose to eat his yesterday! What was he expecting to happen?!

Absolutely this! What did he expect? Yourself or one of the DC to give up their portions? For you to make something else for you/him/them when you had done the mental work load last night of planning tonight's dinner?

Mamanyt · 23/03/2023 23:12

You told him that the lasagna was for tonight's meal. He chose to eat his portion early. That's on him. I'd be bloody annoyed, as well, and not the least repentant about letting him fend for himself.

T1Dmama · 23/03/2023 23:16

MarshaMelrose · 22/03/2023 01:25

But if I ate something that was preferable to the lasagna, my greedy pig of a husband would have done me a favour. Every cloud and all that.

Yes BUT she has to cook/prepare it…
why didn’t the DH just make himself a crisp a sandwich

Ktime · 23/03/2023 22:05

Maybe that’s her idea of cooking, mixing tuna with mayo.

Only if it’s freshly done.

it’s appallingly lazy to do any food prep in advance, you know!

And the epitome of virtue to slave away over a hot stove daily, instead of batch cooking to save time to spend with the kids having a moment to yourself.

I have a similar problem all the time. My husband will eat as much as he wants that is go for more portions if he wants. I don't say to him not to eat more. If its a curry or some one pot dish, I cook enough for 2 days. I am a sahm. So, he doesn't see a problem for me to cook more if it is gone quickly. He gets angry if I say that's for 2 days.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/03/2023 03:55

I'm just here to make sure the thread gets to 1000 posts.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/03/2023 04:30

Quite right @MrsTerryPratchett we wouldn’t want it to go cold and have to reheat it would we? 😉

Skynorth · 24/03/2023 04:39

He is the unreasonable one! Tbh he sounds like a complete knob.

AppallinglyReheated · 24/03/2023 04:54

Oh the irony... canned tuna (for tuna mayo)... is precooked.

How appalling.

Hide half and/or freeze it.

Maybe it's appalling only if you reheat it.

Notamumsym · 24/03/2023 05:50

When you had agreed it was for tea the following night he should have left it and if still hungry last night (which I doubt, he was probably just being a mr greedy) had something else, he was obviously expecting you and the kids to have less so he could have more of it last night and the same the following night.
