DH lost his mind over this

I was in the kitchen with my 3 year old making sandwiches. She was using an adult table knife to spread the cheese spread. My DH walked in and went mad because she wasn't using a plastic knife. I think he's completely over reacted. He's insisting that I've done something really bad by letting DD use a table knife. AIBU to have let her use a table knife at her age?

timeforchampagne · 21/03/2023 19:27

What was his concern?

rogueone · 21/03/2023 19:28

what does he think is going to happen to her? I mean it is a table knife it isn't going to take her fingers off. She should be using little persons cutlery anyway now which isn't plastic. So I think his reaction is OTT.

Aftjbtibg · 21/03/2023 19:29

I let mine do this; it’s not going to cause any harm

Rookriver · 21/03/2023 19:30

He is being unreasonable

Mateyduck · 21/03/2023 19:30

I let my 4 year old spread butter with table knife. Total overreaction, dh needs to calm down . You didn’t leave her alone with a machete.

Ponoka7 · 21/03/2023 19:30

Go for a compromise and get a butter knife. I'm a believer (so are the Germans etc) of teaching a child safety with real objects.

Curseofthenation · 21/03/2023 19:31

Your DH is bonkers.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 21/03/2023 19:31

Mine were eating with normal cutlery at this age. He’s being ridiculous

BabychamGlass · 21/03/2023 19:32

Was he worried she might be Stopped & Searched in the kitchen?

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 21/03/2023 19:33

Is he Mick Dundee and dd has found his knife?

Mochinated · 21/03/2023 19:33

He's insane.

Next time he can make the effing sandwiches while also entertaining the 3yo

You can go for a long poo with your phone like he does!

sherbertyellowteddy · 21/03/2023 19:33

My son is 3 and uses normal cutlery to eat his dinner on a daily basis. He also makes his own jam sandwiches.I also cannot stand plastic cutlery. Your dh is overreacting

Kranke · 21/03/2023 19:34

Mines not two and we give them metal forks and spoons (smaller size), they’ve never liked the feel of the plastic ones. I would definitely let them have a small knife at that age.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 21/03/2023 19:34

He is being ridiculous.

Does he have an anxiety problem?

BingoBonus · 21/03/2023 19:34

Your DH is being totally OTT.

BCBird · 21/03/2023 19:35

Stopped and searched comment made me laff. Ur husband is a plonker

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 21/03/2023 19:35

That's ridiculous. Huge over reaction.

Catnut · 21/03/2023 19:35

I let my (just turned) 3 yo do exactly this. The reaction seems OTT to me.

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 21/03/2023 19:36

Is he afraid she will stab him?

parietal · 21/03/2023 19:36

YABNU

in some cultures, kids learn to cut with sharp knives from the age of 5 or 6. and do that safely without injuries.

TooBored1 · 21/03/2023 19:37

Mine were using kitchen knives to cut soft veg with by then.

bussteward · 21/03/2023 19:37

Oh, God, my DP is like this – treats our nearly four year old like she’s still a toddler and wants to accompany her up and down the stairs and frets about adult cutlery.

It’s fine. Babies use their hands, toddlers use little specially sized knives, preschoolers and up use adult cutlery. It’s not like it’s a lethal chef’s knife or the food processor.

galmom · 21/03/2023 19:37

He'd have a heart attack if he seen what the children use at my 3yo's nursery! Serrated knives for chopping veg, real hammers & nails etc
She was supervised so was safe, complete over reaction on his part.

Aquamarine1029 · 21/03/2023 19:37

My kids were using sharp kitchen knives at 4, of course very closely supervised.

Your husband is being ridiculous.
