DH lost his mind over this

I was in the kitchen with my 3 year old making sandwiches. She was using an adult table knife to spread the cheese spread. My DH walked in and went mad because she wasn't using a plastic knife. I think he's completely over reacted. He's insisting that I've done something really bad by letting DD use a table knife. AIBU to have let her use a table knife at her age?

He'd lose his shit at what I let DD do. I'm very firmly of the opinion that children are massively de-skilled by this kind of attitude.

Fires, knives, all sorts are allowed in my family with strict supervision and clear rules.

DaveyJonesLocker · 21/03/2023 19:41

I give a table knife to my 1 year old. They're blunt.

Agreed.

OP, your DH needs to get a grip. He will end up transferring this anxiety to his DC too if he carries on.

category12 · 21/03/2023 19:45

Was it actually a machete?

Choconut · 21/03/2023 19:46

I'm confused what knife you mean, do you mean a butter knife or a steak knife? As she's buttering bread i guess you mean a butter knife in which case your DH is completely ridiculous. A sharp pencil could do more damage, perhaps she shouldn't have them either!

Sunsetred · 21/03/2023 19:49

These comments have given me a much needed laugh after dealing with his reaction. He's still saying that he has saved our daughter's life by intervening 🙄

YANBU you were right there with her?

bussteward · 21/03/2023 19:51

DD’s nursery had them flipping pancakes over a hot plate the other day and they had serrated knives from about two, I think.

This isn't an isolated overreaction is it?

HoneyPotBee · 21/03/2023 19:56

Is this his first?

Mine were eating with normal cutlery at this age. He’s being ridiculous

This. What on earth is she eating with? Toy knives and forks??

SlashBeef · 21/03/2023 20:06

He'd absolutely spiral in my house 😄

Thoughtful2355 · 21/03/2023 20:06

Eh? my 3 and 4 year old use butter knives all the time :S they cut theyre food up with them..

Thoughtful2355 · 21/03/2023 20:08

Also my nursery have normal knives and forks for the toddlers, its a nursery for aged 3 + so he would hate that

Has he got shares in Johnson's Cotton Wool? Or just Bubble Wrap?

Knob.

Feelingittchy · 21/03/2023 20:12

I want to find this funny but honestly it's annoyed me just reading this. What an idiot.

TomatoSandwiches · 21/03/2023 20:14

Does he have anxiety or something?
Really bizarre overreaction by anyones standard.

SkySmiler · 21/03/2023 20:15

YANBU + You were there supervising her!

My first question would be....when did your OH last do any 'meal prep' with your child?
Of course he's being ridiculous. At 3 both my children were (attempting to) use adult cutlery when eating out.

I am of course assuming your supervising adequately.

Hellno45 · 21/03/2023 20:20

What a prat. What does he think she's going to do, butter herself to death?

CrosswordConundrum · 21/03/2023 20:24

YANBU

The edge of plastic knives can be really sharp if serated so what’s the logic there? I never had plastic in the house for many reasons. At that age a regular butter/dinner knife is totally fine. You’d have to be really trying to hurt yourself.

My PIL have no sharp knives in the house whereas I have tons. I and they categorically cut themselves more at their house than anywhere as they’re trying to apply pressure than just letting the knife cut. Silly.

PriOn1 · 21/03/2023 20:24

I live in Norway. Went into my son’s nursery to pick him up one day. A large group of 3-4 year old children were in a shed, using hammers and nails. One was helping the teacher who was using a big saw.

Small children also whittle wood with sharp knives here. Sometimes, with my British sensitivities, I just have to look the other way. Most of them seem to survive though!

Calmdown14 · 21/03/2023 20:29

Unless it was a steak knife I really don't understand.

Isn't it just the same as toddler cutlery (metal) but bigger in scale

AnneLovesGilbert · 21/03/2023 20:29

He’s permanently lose his mind after a visit to mine. At 3 DD was chopping fruit and veg with butter knives and kitchen knives, using proper scissors and a needle and thread. It’s a wonder she’s still in one piece but she’s got a sensible head on her and she’s dexterous from practise. Nursery lets them chop stuff with knives too.
