To think Gwyneth Paltrow doesn’t have a ‘wellness routine’

She has an eating disorder?

she’s given an interview saying her ‘wellness’ typical day consists of an early Palo dinner of vegetables then a fast til noon the next day ( with coffee only in the morning) when she has bone broth. Repeat.
she then takes IV drips for the nutrients that she’s essentially NOT getting from food, as she’s barely eating.

HOW is this wellness - it’s a starvation routine. How is this in a wellness podcast?

My Mum is anorexic, they starve their children as well as themselves, I saw it with every anorexic I came across (biggest clue is skinny children get fat in teens when they can access more food finally, that doesn't tend to happen in other households unless there is something like Thyroid issues). They eat mountains of food infront of others and lie easily, it's all driven by narcissism in my opinion.

In my experience anorexics are selfish so she won't care that she harms others.

I noticed that they are the most mentally strong controlling people going, stronger than a sex offenders drive. To override the body the ability to gain energy its primary urge takes huge strength, sexual activity is the second strongest after eating.

I may be biased, I have no time for these people due to those I knew in my life.

really irresponsible of media outlets to publish that and call it wellness

I agree. There should be strict media guidelines around the reporting of disordered eating, in the same way that there is around the reporting of suicide, in order to avoid promoting it.

"
I make bone broth using organic chicken carcasses and chicken feet. The feet provide collagen. Bone broth is actually incredibly nutritious and good for the bones, joints and skin. It's also very good for the gut.

I drink it most days and definitely notice it in my skin when I don't."

No, it's not chicken stock. Bone broth is simmered anywhere between 24-36 hours. It's far more concentrated than stock and when cold, turns into a jelly. It also tastes different to stock too. There's a lot of misconceptions about bone broth and it being the same as stock is one of them.

On occasion I do a bone broth fast, but no, I eat other food.

How do you make it, do you use a slow cooker?

Sparklesocks · 15/03/2023 12:34

highfidelity · 15/03/2023 12:26

In your opinion.

I have had just bone broth for lunch and will continue to do so but I also eat breakfast and dinner. Can't say I have ever suffered just having some bone broth instead of food for a meal.

She says she has it most days for lunch. After ‘coffee’ for breakfast. You’re looking at about 40-100 cals depending on serving size. So yes it’s my opinion, but I imagine it’s the opinion of many that that isn’t nourishing, especially alongside so few other calories per day.

Making me hungry just reading that!

It's certainly very dedicated but definitely not for me. Imagine never eating a chip again. Or crisps? What is the point of life I would ask?

I have to wholeheartedly agree!!

I mean in some ways I have more respect for Gwyneth Paltrow being truthful and admitting that it takes virtual starvation and living off fresh air to look like that, but it absolutely shouldn't be touted as wellness or in any way healthy.

I have no respect at all for Gwyneth Paltrow. Literally none.
Today I am mostly respecting Julie Bindel.

Basketballqueen · 15/03/2023 12:35

'She does eat.. just not a huge amount'

I'm not counting DRINKING coffee and bone broth as eating - unless she dips some bread into that liquid, which I doubt she does.
So that's one meal 'early' and then nothing for 14,16,18+ hours?

That's not only 'not a huge amount' it's less that most humans need to function - unless you start using IV's for the missing vitamins, mineral etc of course

She can do what she likes- I just don't think it should be broadcast as a 'wellness' routine. I'll listen when she comes back and says - I'm starving myself.

It can be made in a slow cooker but I don't own one. I use a large stainless steel saucepan and once it's come to a boil, the hob is turned down to its lowest setting.

Have been making it for a decade or so now, so it's just part of my usual routine.

StellaRockafella · 15/03/2023 12:39

So that's one meal 'early' and then nothing for 14,16,18+ hours

But that's just intermitant fasting. Quite common.

furryfrontbottom · 15/03/2023 12:39

If her whole raison d'etre is to stay thin enough to contend for top film roles and modelling contracts in an industry with very narrow (literally) beauty standards then fine. She should own that. Be honest about it or keep the details private. But don't pretend it's for the pursuit of health or something others should aspire to.

But she doesn't even act any more does she?

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 15/03/2023 12:43

No she's given up on the acting I think. Goop is where the real $$$ is.

Sidge · 15/03/2023 12:47

Anyone who considers a diet so restrictive one needs IV vitamins to supplement it, "wellness", needs their head looking at.

Certainly doesn't fit my definition of wellness.

DappledThings · 15/03/2023 12:48

Doliveira · 15/03/2023 11:25

I’m not seeing how she looks unwell in that video?! She looks fresh faced, no dark shadows around her eyes, relaxed?

Her cheeks are sunken, she looks nervous and exhausted. I can't see how you think she looks well.

Basketballqueen · 15/03/2023 11:07

Imagine living your life like this. Presumably she does go out with friends for celebrations or meals etc? I have a friend who is very controlling over food to the extent that she's never, not in 15 years of friendship has ever eaten with us. She will never come for lunch or dinner, always eats first or says she does, then joins for drinks

It was my thought too. Not sure if those ABS are worth it. She must be starving all the time.

ImAvingOops · 15/03/2023 12:53

Needing IVs to get enough of the right vitamins isn't healthy. She's choosing that, instead of food, so she can remain very slim. To me, that isn't wellness. It's certainly not mental wellness imo.
I'm sure bone broth is good for you. Same as drinking the greens water from boiled veg that my dad used to do in the 50s when he was a kid - when you boil stuff the vitamins leach out into the water. But you still need enough real food to sustain energy levels and meet nutritional requirements.

35965a · 15/03/2023 12:53

I agree she can do what she likes but she shouldn’t be given a platform to brag about her eating disorder.

Corah5 · 15/03/2023 12:55

She doesn’t say she eats like that permanently though. Isn’t a detox just short term?

singer15 · 15/03/2023 12:57

I have no problem with someone suggesting bone broth or intermittent fasting as potentially being healthy, though I wouldn't be satisfied with just bone broth after skipping breakfast. The IV thing... That sounds scary to me and not at all indicative of a normal, healthy lifestyle.

She's been a kook for years, though. Nothing new about that.

Doliveira · 15/03/2023 13:00

@DappledThings ok, I just watched it again and can see a different perspective now. I think she has always been a whippet rather than a Labrador! I guess I think of unhealthy as looking puffy and congested, tired.

No idea about her acting tbh. Point still stands though if she's doing it to remain a certain weight for her career whether that's films or this lifestyle stuff.

Jackthelast · 15/03/2023 13:04

I don't think she looks great either. As someone who is the same age as her, I'm also wondering what her energy levels are like. When I was late teens/early 20's I could probably have got away with not eating much and carrying on, but heading towards the menopause, when I'm at work, I find if I don't have carbs for breakfast, I feel like I'm going to pass out early afternoon (granted my job is likely more physical than hers though).

thenightsky · 15/03/2023 13:04

Won't her veins collapse eventually if she is putting in an IV every few days?

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/03/2023 13:11

My mum made beef bone broth for the first time in years and it was amazing. But she serves it with a whole boiled potato in it. So you drink the broth and then mash the spud in the bowl with a good knob of butter. Delicious.

Gweneth looks like she could do with a bowl of spuds and butter.

Just because you wouldn't be satisfied, it doesn't mean no-one will.

Also, breakfast is just the first meal one eats in a day. For many, this isn't necessarily at a traditional breakfast time. Indeed, those who practise intermittent fasting often have their first meal at lunchtime which could be seen as lunch because technically it is, but it is still breakfast (for them).

Additionally, some don't eat traditional breakfast foods. I often eat a piece of fish or a steak with vegetables, and sometimes a small bowl of porridge too for breakfast (usually eaten around 7:00AM), and why a pint of bone broth can be enough for me for lunch.

To be clear though, I am not condoning GP's eating habits, far from it, but I do understand some of her practises.
