To think Gwyneth Paltrow doesn’t have a ‘wellness routine’

She has an eating disorder?

she’s given an interview saying her ‘wellness’ typical day consists of an early Palo dinner of vegetables then a fast til noon the next day ( with coffee only in the morning) when she has bone broth. Repeat.
she then takes IV drips for the nutrients that she’s essentially NOT getting from food, as she’s barely eating.

HOW is this wellness - it’s a starvation routine. How is this in a wellness podcast?

@Alltheproductsnoidea aspirational? What is she aspiring too? She’s already rich, skinny and famous.

or did you mean ‘inspirational’ which, if this is the case, I can’t say I agree with

I saw this on tiktok. Reassuringly, the comments all said how awful this was. I didn’t see anyone thinking this was in any way normal or a good thing to follow.

It screams ED. She looks very tired and ill which is no surprise. Hopefully her children have not followed this rubbish and it doesn’t influence others.

She's a rich white woman, so people will see it as aspirational! The whole goop thing. All i see is orthoexia and disordered eating. 🤷

this contains a link to the video in case anyone thinks it’s an exaggeration.

imagine a man saying this and it being promoted as ‘wellness’.

I have a DD ( And a DS) and worry that this kind of nonsense just puts more and more pressure on girls & women to achieve this kind of unsustainable routine as a goal, to be thin and ‘well’

I agree that Gwenyth is ridiculous. Her diet is not promoting wellness in any reasonable sense and she basically just has anorexia that is medically supported enough so it doesn't kill her or her career.

However that dietitian in the article is also alarming. Despite being a healthy weight herself, her talking points are all from the "Health at Every Size" and "Fat Activist/Liberationist" school of thought. Not everyone is capable of intuitively eating in a way that is good for our health and so lots of us (including me) need to eat mindfully with an awareness of macros and calorie content. If I ate without any restricton I would be (have been) morbidly obese. Eating to excess is just as disordered as overly restricting eating it just takes a bit longer to kill you.

xogossipgirlxo · 15/03/2023 10:45

It's no wellness if she has to take vitamin drips. Another fad diet, like many celebs do.

Fuckstix · 15/03/2023 10:47

Agreed. It's irresponsible to call this a 'wellness routine'. Regular IV drips hold risks such as infection, phlebitis, extravasation, air embolism even. If you have the money to eat a balanced diet then why deprive yourself of nutrients and replace them in such a performative and risky way? Who even administers them at these IV drip bars?

If her whole raison d'etre is to stay thin enough to contend for top film roles and modelling contracts in an industry with very narrow (literally) beauty standards then fine. She should own that. Be honest about it or keep the details private. But don't pretend it's for the pursuit of health or something others should aspire to.

Fuckstix · 15/03/2023 10:50

If it is an ED then how sad that for all her fame and money, she has nobody to encourage her towards treatment instead of this behaviour.

Basketballqueen · 15/03/2023 11:07

Imagine living your life like this. Presumably she does go out with friends for celebrations or meals etc? I have a friend who is very controlling over food to the extent that she's never, not in 15 years of friendship has ever eaten with us. She will never come for lunch or dinner, always eats first or says she does, then joins for drinks

foxandbee · 15/03/2023 11:09

That is so sad. She looks really unwell in that video.

Snugglemonkey · 15/03/2023 11:09

Yeah, that is not wellness.

workshy46 · 15/03/2023 11:12

I think she looks incredible (although not in that podcast) and he cook books are actually really good. At least she is honest about what she does, in terms of injectables and lasers etc and the work she puts into maintaining her body
I also don't think she takes herself that seriously

Fizbosshoes · 15/03/2023 11:16

I think loads of celebrities have ED.
While there are always lots of MN likely with ED themselves keen to insist they are naturally a size 4 - 6, most women would have to be pretty restrictive about what they ate to stay a size 6 or whatever the "acceptable" size is.
As a former anorexic I'm always Hmm when celebrities cite "running after their children" or a bit of yoga, trying to avoid bread because it makes them bloated etc as the reason they are skinny. When it's more likely they are massively restricting what they eat and borderline anorexic.

I mean in some ways I have more respect for Gwyneth Paltrow being truthful and admitting that it takes virtual starvation and living off fresh air to look like that, but it absolutely shouldn't be touted as wellness or in any way healthy.

Basketballqueen · 15/03/2023 11:20

‘I mean in some ways I have more respect for Gwyneth Paltrow being truthful and admitting that it takes virtual starvation and living off fresh air to look like that.’

perhaps if she said ‘aI have an ED brought on partly by the pressures of being an actor, this is what it takes.’ I’d have respect. But she doesn’t, she’s promoting her brand of ‘wellness’ and a starvation diet is not wellness.

‘I think she looks incredible’

which is after all the most important thing?

I hope teenage girls aren’t looking at her, her brand, her products and thinking the same thing.

I’m not seeing how she looks unwell in that video?! She looks fresh faced, no dark shadows around her eyes, relaxed?

Dropzonefourpleaseben · 15/03/2023 11:25

Didn’t she used to advocate staying completely out of the sun a few years ago? Seem to remember an interview with her where she said her doctor warned her she was starting with osteoporosis due to getting absolutely no Vitamin D. Cue photos of her on the beach in a bikini.

Westfacing · 15/03/2023 11:26

I'd take with a pinch of salt the many claims made by celebrities - all paleo, vegan, attachment parenting, anti-fur, etc. I've seen many in action and they're following no such ideals!

Do you think thats true in general terms though about the size? Im sure there are people with eating disorders but if you compare the size of people (and children) to years ago we are enormous. Did everyone in the 60s and 70s have an eating disorder to be that slim?

Dinopawus · 15/03/2023 11:36

People in decades gone by were skinny in their 20's and 30's and few people were obese, but it was still normal for people in middle age onwards to gain weight.

There is also a healthy middle ground between eating disorder and morbidly obese.

Fraaahnces · 15/03/2023 11:37

@bellac11 - no, they all chain-smoked and snorted cocaine.

Mamette · 15/03/2023 11:37

I feel sorry for her. Her identity is all in her body.

Yes that would better, if you're going to be truthful about starvation, don't promote it as wellness or something that should be aspired to.

@Dropzonefourpleaseben
It wouldn't be at all surprising if she had osteoporosis due to an ED as much as staying out of the sun.

Are we watching the same video? She looks gaunt. Her skin looks very pale and fragile and her hair is thin.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 15/03/2023 11:47

I don't feel sorry for her as her Goop brand is monetising this as a 'healthy' way to live your life. She's like the wellness Jim Jones for a certain subset of wealthy American women.
