Just got our new council tax bill, besides the fact that everything has gone up I'm annoyed at the way it's addressed.

I registered us, my name was first.
I own the house.
The money comes out of my sole account.
Both my first and last names are first alphabetically.

Yet somehow magically the council have his name first.

AIBU to be annoyed?

OP posts:
Mrsphilmiller · 13/03/2023 14:03

so just because someone name is addressed before yours, they are somehow superior to you?

DinnerThyme · 13/03/2023 14:04

SSE won’t allow me to be an account holder and only allow me to be a third party with permission to speak…except that, having been added a thousand times, they still say there’s nothing on the account to show that. Every single fucking time. On Friday they phoned me, on my mobile, and said that they can’t speak to me. I made a complaint that they ignored and then I tried to complain to the ombudsman but I can’t…because I’m not an account holder.

Oh fgs. This isn’t an issue and attempting to make it one just makes the actual issues so much harder to tackle.

It’s not an issue that some companies and organisations still think women are second class to men? I disagree.

I think it's bit of a niggle if you are the responsible one and own the house.
I called the council after I names got seapped. I own the house, as op, i pay it, I set it up, it's my bank details and email so why the fuck am i suddenly swapped to behind him.
It just well annoyed me. We don't even have same surnames. Apparently, they can't really do anything about it "it's the system🤷🏻"

HelpMeGetThrough · 13/03/2023 14:05

I'm sorry I forgot that it's only possible to worry about one thing at a time and that being mildly annoyed at council sexism means I have nothing else going on in my life!

Probably "system supplier sexism". I work for a company that produces, amongst other things, Revenues and Benefits software. The order in which names are generated, usually depends on how the system has been configured.

Unless it's on fixed, i would cancel the current contract and start one in your name.
I am pretty and willing to spend time on these shites🤦

It's a small issue but it'a important in the grand scheme. Ever single time a woman is placed below a man especially when she as the bill payer should be placed as the main customer, it goes against what women are fighting for. Properly equal standing as males. Tackle the small stuff along with the big stuff. They're easier to change but impacts more than you realise.

We actually switched to Octopus (who have been great) but SSE are still charging us even though we’re no longer with them.

ChilliBandit · 13/03/2023 14:09

YANBU OP, I bought a car, it’s in my name on everything yet the dealer just left another message asking to speak to (husband’s name) about whether he’d like to upgrade the car. They only have his name at all as he was a named driver on the 5 day complimentary insurance for when we picked the car up just incase I couldn’t drive (it was near my due date).

As for those complaining about it not being a real problem, bore off. Everyday sexism is a problem and it’s fucking grating.

Chickenly · 13/03/2023 14:11

@FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks how on earth is this not an issue to you?

Someone in the government made an active decision that men come before women on written communications regardless of who owns the property, who pays the bill or any other relevant factor. They actually actively set that up, it’s not a default setting that wasn’t changed or a biological inequality that hasn’t been tackled. It was an active choice that women come behind men entirely on the basis of being women. Of course that’s an issue.

Cornishbelle · 13/03/2023 14:15

It's written in the council tax regulations that any couple should be jointly registered regardless of who owns the house (google joint and several liability) As for the order the names come in, that will be set by the supplier of the IT system the council uses, and something totally out of the council's control.

I'm all for equal rights etc but maybe there are other criteria for whose name is listed first, not based on sex? Would your partner have a case for argument if it was the other way around?

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 13/03/2023 14:17

The only thing he could possibly beat me with would be he is older.
That's it. And that wasn't problem first few years

KenAddams · 13/03/2023 14:17

Do you honestly believe there is someone in a office working for council tax sitting thinking oh I know what would make this job more fun I'll swap all the names about on about 1000000 bills I'm sending out at one time.... just stop

I hate this sort of reply.

MN is full of pretty grievances, minor inconveniences and gripes. That is the nature of a bloody chat forum. If we only posted our ‘actual problems’, it’d be a bit dull on here.

Just because it might not matter as much as something else in the great scheme, it doesn’t mean it’s not worth mentioning.

OP, you’ve been visited “There are worse problems, therefore yours does not count” fairy! They take the time to sprinkle their dust all over threads they think should not have been started. It’s good luck!!

But seriously, I understand your aggravation. It may not be intention in your case, but it does happen.

I even had a friend that admitted to doing it on another friend’s application. He worked in the local office that approved certain exterior modifications. The clown decided her partner must own the house (because women can’t own houses), added the guys name in front of hers and even changed her last name.

This guy had met her socially through me, admitted this nonsense to me after asking about “Irene and her husband”. He was aghast when I told him they were not married and had only been together a brief time.

We aren’t friends any longer.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 13/03/2023 14:19

A garage where I once got my old car MOT'd posts a yearly reminder when it's due.

They write it to my dad, even though he never owed the car and has never lived at my address. I've called them up to tell them, and that I no longer own said car, but they still do it.

I won't use them now.

In that case, why don't you and the rest of the "couldn't care less" brigade fuck on over to the royal family board and leave this astute comment on some of the many, many truly inane threads. Some of us can walk and chew gum at the same time.

shakeitoffsis · 13/03/2023 14:21

I wouldn't and don't give a shit about this.

One name has to be first.
I honestly wouldn't even give this a second thought. I'm not sure my DH is even named on our bill (even though he pays it)

For somebody who doesn't give a shit, you sure seem provoked by it. Wonder why that is.

Cornishbelle · 13/03/2023 14:23

@FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee just interested then how do the garage know your Dad?

@Cornishbelle - I assume they are writing to Mr Bloggs rather than Miss Bloggs for example. So they don’t actually know/ are writing to the Dad they’ve just assumed the car owner must be a man!

LadyHarrietVane · 13/03/2023 13:22

I don’t see it as a petty problem. I see it as part
of the enshrined sexism of our society, and it needs dismantling piece by piece.

Absolutely this.

British Gas took my name off the bill and put DH and other, when I was the one who set it all up. Highly irritating and a sign of everyday sexism that needs to be challenged.
