Searched throw Drs’s girlfriends pocket at found cannabis

Ds who has just turned 16 has a girlfriend. Don’t really approve as she doesn’t seem a very good influence. Tonight they went out for a walk and when they came back I could smell weed. I know I shouldn’t have but I searched her coat pocket that was hanging in our hall. I found a packet of mostly used weed. What the hell do I do now? I know I’m wrong for searching her pocket but I’m really worried about my son. I have left it on the floor to look like it fell out. AIBU?

And to be clear, a seasoned smoker will obviously know the difference by the smell. But a mum who has no experience at all of drugs and a 16 year old boy who perhaps hasn't been smoking long... potentially not so much.

1.Weed and skunk are the same. Theyre just slang terms.

1. Noone calls it skunk anyway.
2. Weed smokers in the past were not all smoking weak stuff. Theres always been huge variations in strength. Most people buying weed rather than growing their own would be expecting high quality then just as much as now.

First, this is not an invasion of privacy, and not remotely in the same league as going through someone's handbag or drawers. This girl has come into someone else's house smelling of an illegal substance. Secondly, in the circumstances any invasion of privacy would be justifiable since the OP's son is still very much a minor who has important exams looming and is at an impressionable age. Thirdly, the use of the word 'disgusting' is the language of a troll in what is supposed to be a supportive community.

It's all been skunk type hybrids for over 20 years now. The softer stuff disappeared in the 90's and is quite hard to get now.

I would be horrified too, my kids are adults now and neither have touched drugs nor tobacco. Both know the serious risks and potential for them to get the sack from work (dd2's work has regular drug testing)

Can't quite believe how many people think you were wrong for searching her pockets. They are children and need parenting. I would still put it back and talk to your son later but certainly don't think you were wrong to do this.

It is all down to probability.

You'd be hard pushed to find an addict of any kind that didn't begin with smoking. You have to be able to tolerate nicotine to smoke cannabis in most cases.
Nicotine primes the brains dopamine receptors for addiction. Dopamine led behaviour. It's all there in the science.
Not every single person that smokes will drink, try a joint, try something else and so on. But plenty will. If you never smoke you are highly unlikely to experiment in the same way. It exists but it's not the norm.
