To be shocked at how people treat their nannies?

Sister in law is one and is very well qualified and experienced.
Yet she has had awful experiences with families.
Them not paying her on time
Nickling and diming.
Parents siding with their kids vile behaviour and letting them be rude to her
Accusing her of stealing.
Not telling her about the kids raging headlice
Leaving dirty dishes piled up in the sink (not kids)
Expecting her to change her schedule at a moments notice or keep days open without paying her.
Why are people so careless with the person who is looking after their kids, persuambly their most precious possessions?

As a nanny with 30+ years experience I've had all this apart from the accusation of stealing...
You forgot to add inappropriate touching...
Some people see us as 'The Help'..
You are not wrong..

NannyR · 12/03/2023 16:18

To balance things out, I've worked as a nanny for over 25 years and the only problem I've experienced from your list is the dirty dishes (occasionally). On the whole, the families I've worked for have been very respectful and treated me as a professional.

BelleMarionette · 12/03/2023 16:20

What is nickling and dining? Definitely not a UK saying. Is this copied from a us website?

NannyR · 12/03/2023 16:23

I think a lot of it may be country dependent. I'm on Facebook groups for UK nannies and one for nannies mainly in the US and they do seem to have lower wages and worse working conditions than in the UK.

American saying, should 'Nickle and Diming' a way of saying nitpicking on spending so questioning small spends or insisting on paying back exactly £3.21 in expenses rather than giving £3.50.

Somebodiesmother · 12/03/2023 16:30

You are being unreasonable to be surprised yes. People who can afford to employ other people to do domestic work very often treat them like crap, this is well known.

Skinnermarink · 12/03/2023 16:32

Ive been a nanny for 15 years and gage experienced all sorts (not an accusation stealing though!)

Sadly, even the ‘good’ families can start to take the piss, and the more dedicated and capable you are at your job. They often get complacent.

She needs to Quit

mynameiscalypso · 12/03/2023 16:36

She's not in London and looking for an after school position is she? I promise I won't do any of that!

Helenahandkart · 12/03/2023 16:42

I worked as both a nanny and a cleaner when I was younger. I always found it amazing that I was routinely paid much more per hour as a cleaner. It felt as though people valued their houses over their children’s welfare.

rockpoolingtogether · 12/03/2023 16:44

What's nickling and diming?

rockpoolingtogether · 12/03/2023 16:46

Have a friend who is a norland trained nanny- she's leaving it to go into teaching

Megapint · 12/03/2023 16:48

@rockpoolingtogether.- penny pinching

Justdontbejudgy · 12/03/2023 16:54

I was at a dinner once with a friend's group of friends. Both my husband and I were horrified when one of them (a successful author and semi famous) stated in conversation but 'they are just a nursery worker'. Excuse me? They are a person, and a person who is looking after my/your child all day. The distain for the staff was quite awful.
I can only imagine a nanny is also in this zone for this person. I feel for your SIL as some people are just ***.

Spidey66 · 12/03/2023 16:54

This is one example though.

Not that I'd know, neither working as one or needing one. But you're suggesting that because ONE nanny is treated badly that ALL are. Which I'm sure isn't true.

And I'd never heard the phrase nickling and diming before. Is it like penny pinching? And if so why not say it seeing as this is a UK site?

Btjdkfnn · 12/03/2023 16:56

Some people are bastards

So, unfortunately, some of the families employing nannies will be bastards

Counting the pennies.

It's a cosmopolitan world out there, keep up.

Justalittlebitduckling · 12/03/2023 17:01

Where we live (SE) everyone is desperate for nannies so you could have your pick of families. It’s expensive to live here, though.

Justalittlebitduckling · 12/03/2023 17:03

Surely most people know that nickels and dimes are US currency and can work out the rest from the context 🙄

Nope.

@Justalittlebitduckling - one would think so. But this is mumsnet so anything seen as AMERICAN 😱 must been seen as totally unfathomable.

dirty dishes?

Are people now expected to make sure they clean their houses, make sure there isn't a dish in the sink and leave everywhere spotless in advance of the nanny coming?

Lol

You’d think that, wouldn’t you? It’s an excuse to be snotty about anything that isn’t bbc English. Also, why can’t people google it rather than acting like the dowager countess in Downton Abbey “what is a…weekend?” 😑

Absolutely. I've never heard of it in my life, and was able to work it out!

I've never had a nanny, but I do treat my cleaner like a goddess Grin It saddens me that some people can be total scoundrels Sad

MissMarianHalcombe · 12/03/2023 17:21

I used to work for a trade Union in UK who had nannies (amongst many other professions) for members. I have to say I had to support many nannies who’d been treated unfairly. Sadly, this doesn’t surprise me at all
